The way a rod loads is effected by the line weight/length. You'd be better off buying a rod you want, and then going to one of the full service spey shops that will let you try different line weights. It really is that important. There is some personal preference involved.

I'd at least recommend that you go to a "try" day for one of the shops and try some different rods. I didn't believe it until I tried it. Even lines marked as the same "weight" cast differently.

Don't get me wrong, you can adjust to anything, but setting up the rod/reel/line correctly will make your casts effortless.
