Steelheader.net supports our Troops!

Marty and I have been talking the last couple days on something this board could do to help support our troops, board members annd fellow fisherman deployed overseas.

I proposed to Marty, and he agreed that Steelheader.net offer free site access, waving all supporter fees to Regular Military, National Guard and Reserves deployed away from home.

All you need to do is register on this board, then pm or email Marty or myself, and we'll get you hooked up to full Steelheader.net board access @ no cost.

Also I, along with a couple other fishermen, are looking to get you out for a days fun fishing when you're home on R & R or finished with your deployment.
Please pm me for more info.

Just some tiny ways of saying THANK YOU for your service to our country.

That's a Great Idea Dudes!!

and I agree 110%, I got a cousin over there who got a week off to get married, he's been there for 3 years..He's a Top Gun kinda guy, so they keep em around...

He is very happy though......
He bought a house during that week in Alaska

Can't wait till he gets out, he's gonna be a pilot and live in Alaska, how convenient.....

In all seriousness, the people fighting/working over there have alot of dedication and perseverance....beyond what I could imagine...

Very cool idea. I was just about to ask Marty about something similar. Have a flyfishing board that we're doing that already, and have had quite a few guys out (my last trip FINALLY out fishing I invited a guy just home from Iraq to go). This is a great idea, and well worth it. Been sending my flypins over, and did a big bulk of Xmas cards with flies/jigs in them for servicemen/women this last Xmas. This is a great idea. Hopefully I'll be completely on my feet and can get my boat out to offer rides here soon too.

You guys are awesome. I have been overseas for the past 5 1/2 months and all I can do is read all the new STS's my wife sends me. Not being able to hit the river is a lot harder than I though it would be, since when i'm home I hit up the river 3-4 times a week. It's really nice to know we have people on the home front that supports us, and feed us a little info on how the river s are doing while we are gone. I'm in Mosul, Iraq and there's a river about 5 min drive (Tigrus) but theres no way in hell you'll see me fishing out there. Well guys keep a few in the river so when I get back I'll have some thing to do j/k... Slay on slayers

Below is what was put out on Ft Lewis by CSM Kevin Lemon, the Garrison CSM:
ALL,

Below is a GREAT offer for some of your/our Soldiers returning from theaters of operation (Iraq & Afghanistan). Basically they are offering a free guided fishing trip! Heck of a deal! The Steelheader.net family is mostly made up of veterans who want to thank our Soldiers for their sacrifices by making this offer.

I know we have a lot of deserving Soldiers, who really would enjoy this opportunity... Just asking that you spread the word to them.

Additionally, please note the offer to get some really neat looking stickers for members of your unit... Especially if they're currently deployed!!

Bottom line: I've fished with a bunch of these guys... They're good, safe, and have a good time. The POC is SGM Mike Kurtz at MAMC. His Edress is above, and his phone number is 968-1718. Please spread the word.

SGT Casey andrew.n.casey@us.army.mil
I look forward to the fishing. I will find out specific dates for my friends and let you know. My contact number is 253-576-3050.
Also, who would I contact about getting the stickers so I can display them and mail some to my buddies. Thanks, SGT Casey ( he has two buddies coming back soon for R&R)

I have just returned from Iraq and have been re-assigned as the G3 SGM for I Corps. It was wierd recieving this email because my wife just last night suddenly out of no where said she wants to go fishin! I have been deployed two of the last three years in a war zone and have 28 years in the Army. We would like to throw a line in and relax.

Ash, no apologies necessary for voicing your thoughts. Consider that some, like myself, suffered the public indignities and indifferences as Viet Nam vets, while others are either vets from other conflicts, or witnessed what occurred in the past. Hopefully we're all united in a common cause...to see that this never happens again, and that our armed forces receive the respect and support that they deserve for the sacrefices they make on our behalf and the rights of others. You didn't make the decisions behind these events, but you are prepared to accept the challenge and duty that makes our country and freedom so charished.

As others have stated, there is no such thing as a "piddly E-4" or any other rank for that matter. That's what I came home as after 14 months in Nam. Even though I was offered commissions. I, and other vets know how much work it takes to attain grade, and you can be proud of yours as was I when I came home. You all make me proud.

The SGM is a special person, as they all are. They are at the top of their class [NCO's] which is no small achievement. They are in a command role which allows them to do much for the enlisted men and women, and I have never met one that didn't take that responsibility to heart. I have a lot of respect for these people and the role they serve in.

I have a lot of respect for these people and the role they serve in.

very well put. and if i may say....... ditto.

Re: Steelheader.net supports our Troops!

If army is anything like AF, E4 is that stepping stone grade. You are starting to become a leader, but yet still learning. You will be looked to by your superiors to train the e1,2 and 3s. You may even train higher ranks that cross train into your career field. Don't look at it as the "PIDDLY E4" Look as it as just another rank closer to being Sergeant Major.

Re: Steelheader.net supports our Troops!

I guess the "piddly E-4" comment came out wrong, I did not, in anyway, mean it to be a complaint or an indignation. I was just trying to express that even as lower enlisted soldiers we can see the big picture that all of you great people are painting for us, and I've not heard of a person that is not grateful for the support that you folks provide. I'm very sorry if that comment offended anybody, It was not intended to.

Re: Steelheader.net supports our Troops!

I took a Navy guy out fishin Jeff Head today, his name is James Foster, hooked up with him at i-boats.com, met him first time this morning at Shilshole, we hooked and got to the boat a nice King but it had too many fins and was released unharmed, I did get a picture but it was not a digital camera and I do not know how to post pictures, we took it while the fish was still in the water, then released it, it had to go at least 15-18 lbs, purty fish, got me all excited, did'nt get another bite the rest of the day. It was a nice day tho weather wise, and I got to do my part and take one of our fightin men fishin, we gonna go agin.

Back from Iraq yesterday

The husband of one of my employees just got back from Iraq yesterday and he is dying to go fishing. He is an avid Salmon/Steelhead guy. Anybody gonna have an open seat available in the near future? After all that sand, this guy needs some time on the water. Post or PM me if you are willing to take him.
Also, after Aug. 1 the "Trouthead Bank Stomping Adventures for the Military" start for any and all that are interested.

This guy will be going back to Iraq on the 18th. of this month. If nothing else happens, I'm taking him bank stomping on Saturday. He has been looking for Kings in the Puyallup and I know that it's really slow down there so far. He hasn't had a hit yet, anybody got any ideas for a fish?

Re: Steelheader.net supports our Troops!

Hi everyone,
This site is great, alot of useful info. I was wondering a buddy of mine and I were trying to do some salmon/steelhead fishing before heading back to Iraq in Nov for our 2nd tour, we returned in Jan of 05 from our 1st. I have tried fishing the puyallup with no success and am not really sure where else to go. I was hoping someone could help us out with becoming more skilled at taking on this amazing fishery. Thanks in advance for any advice. AJ

Lets be honest about the military being the best.. It CAN at some points in your life help you and guide you to a better furture. For me 5 years is enough, I will have to deal with extreme pain for the rest of my life and the MILITARY is not really sure whats wrong with me. O well I can still fire up the sled and go fishing.

Re: Steelheader.net supports our Troops!

I wish y'all had offered this when I was in the middle east! But, I really like what you guys are doing. But to be honest, the best thing you can ever do, is to find out a unit that is overseas and send a care package to an anonoymous troop. When I was over there, I got a card from someone I didn't know and it was really awesome.

Perhaps sending a fishing/car mag, a short letter, and maybe some non-perishable candy/jerky or whatever. I guarantee that it will make that soldier's day

Re: Steelheader.net supports our Troops!

Lucky balbowa,
THe military won't (for security purposes) allow that sort of thing anymore. What has to happen now is any packages need to be sent to someone (by name). I remember getting the packages addressed to "Any Soldier". That was cool. The problem is that anyone (i.e. terrorists or anti-military) could poison the goodies, or put a bomb or something like anthrax in a package. Best bet is to get a hold of someone in the military, and have them sent what ever it is to a deserving soldier, sailor or airman in the region.

I was in Qatar Jan - May. We got the to whoever packages. As a flying crew chief I can take a few care packages over myself. All I know is that I will go to Ramstein first, from there I don't know. I leave about the 7th. Marty has my mailing address if you have, say, some smoked salmon. Don't worry about customs.

I have some great open evening seats this summer, to get our armed forces people out fishing, and if I happen to be busy...there are many other great people here @ SH.net that have offered to get our troops out.

A reminder, Marty(this sites owner) has offered free site access to all service people deployed away from home.

Hi this is jim. I think this is a great program and one that deserves to be kept alive. I know that some of the guides on this board have taken returning soldiers out for trips but I do not think it should only be on them. I would like to see the board as a whole support this cause. Marty and mods what do you think about starting some kind of member supported fund for this? This site is full of great people . Re: Steelheader.net supports our Troops!

My offer still stands from another thread that was like this one.

If you are in the military and are going to have some time off in the state, bring some waders and a rain jacket. I have extra poles and tackle if needed. If you want to fly fish for Steelhead or Salmon (if they are running), I have single-handed 9' and two-handed 13.5' rods along with hundreds of flies. If you gear fish, I have bait-casting and spin-casting rigs with hundreds of jigs, pre-tied leaders, spinners, spoons and pretty much anything sold in tackle shops.

Let me know a few weeks in advance, if you can, so I can arrange for a babysitter for my son. And if you have little ones at home with your spouse, we can always let the kids play there while we fish and I won't need as much time to setup babysitting.

It doesn't matter where we go as long as it isn't TOO far from where I am living. I will be in King County for a little while, so pretty much anywhere from down south to the Cowlitz up north to the Skagit will be close enough. I will be back on the Peninsula in the spring and anything from Forks to Hood Canal will be close enough. If there is a specific river you would like to fish in those areas we can fish there, but we'll have the best chance of catching something by going to one of the rivers in the north sound I have "dialed in" over the years.

Just send me a PM and we'll setup a time to go!

This is from the last "support our troops" outing. I can't think of a better way to take a break from Iraq.
This is how it went:
