SE charter halibut rule enacted

Well, it looks like it happened.

Good thing I've got 4 days unguided fishing following my 2 days of guided. I can see how the guides are going to be hurting.

Re: SE charter halibut rule enacted

"Sport charter fishing has grown in southeast Alaska while halibut abundance has decreased," said Mecum. "With this rule, we are trying to reduce the charter halibut catch to ensure that we continue to fish sustainably. We want to work with the North Pacific Fishery Management Council on a long-term solution for sustainable fishing by both commercial and recreational fishing sectors."

I call BS, with the economy tanking I gotta believe every lodge in S.E. is hurting this year, bookings are way down, they don't have to take a fish away to lower impacts on the fish, the boats tied up to the docks will take care of that.

AK Kings, the charter boats don't hold a candle to the long liners when it comes to how many fish get hauled in. I would be hard pressed to find one case where sport fishermen wiped out a run that wasn't decimated by commercial fishermen first...

I know that, they have a higher percent of by-catch then the sporties tiny piece of the overall take and there bitchin over a few more charters

It must be nice having so much power and make so much $$$ from a PUBLIC resource.

Looked to me like they reduced quotas in several areas to maintain or increase catch in other areas. I wonder if the bycatch issue had something to do with this?

Re: SE charter halibut rule enacted

For now, I'm just going to stay somewhat quiet. This halibut decision has been expected by us for a while. Now we just have to see if we can convince a judge to implement an injunction, just like last year, and hear our case. The ball is already rolling and nothing is set in stone yet. Let's wait a month and see what happens for sure.

Cool, they got it done last year, lets hope they can do it again this year.
