Cut spey line
|
|
Yesterday some dud floating by in a boat cast over my spey line with his mono and slinky, when the lines tightened his mono? cut my SA spey line in half about in the middle. It was cut cleanly like with a knife. Anyone else have this happen?

mono wouldnt do that I suspect he was using braid.. stuff will cut your hands. Never heard of it happening with a fly line.. that sucks!!

Second vote for Marty's observation. Braided line would act like a saw on a fly line; mono won't.

Mono will cut the outer coating easy enough. We use 20# Maxima to strip the outer coating off all the time. I don't think mono or braid would cut the core unless it was some kind gelspun, and even then it would seem to need a lot of sawing to do that. How long were you guys hooked up and how much tugging was involved?

Who did the unhooking and how far away were you?

Re: Cut spey line

I had cast about 80' feet of 10/11 SA Salmon/steelhead spey line that I had looped at 10' for tips. I had an intermediate tip on at the time. He cast over my line when it was at about 45 degrees downstream. The lines tightened and came out of the water and immediately parted. I didn't really feel a very heavy pull. My line was cut cleanly in the heavy belly at about the midpoint of the line. The rest of the line and tip went downstream. The people in the boat didn't come in and visit they suddenly decided to fish somewhere else. I guess they didn't like my language.

Yeah. Sounds like typical Spiderwire damage to me.

Ouch, all I can think of the $$$ lost in having to replace a spey line, bummer.
Never happened to me even on the crowded dam runs I fish occassionally with all of the drift guys surrounding me.

It must have been a freak occurrence, I haven't been able to cut through the line core with even light spider wire.

I've cut line before with my mono leader. Cut it to the core after a bad cast.

don't throw that line away, you can splice the 2 sections back together and be none the worse for wear.
get in touch with speyshop.com, Aaron will lay out the details and has the stuff you need to fix it, i also think poppy at redshed has the same stuff.

Splicing it isn't an option, about 20' of line and the tip is gone. It is fairly easy to cut through the line coating, but what puzzles me is what would cut the core? The line has been replaced, it is one of my favorites on my 14' 9/10 wt.

Well, one more thought on the 'how?' You stepped on the line and it ground under a cleat. Not all that uncommon.
