spey flies

hello to everybody,
new to the forum. I am looking to buy some good quality spey flies, preferably custom made for salmon river, NY.
Any info would greatly be appreciated. You could send me PM's as well.

what kind of spey flies are you looking for? in my experience theres really nice tied pretty ones that kind of work good then there are the ones that dont look the best and they work.

I was thinking of the classic ones( Gold Reach, lady caroline, etc) or any north american spey versions of some of the classic steelhead flie( eg Green butt skunk,etc)

What's your 'target fish?' Just because you mention the 'Salmon River,' doesn't mean you're not targeting another fish. We've a fly shop here in Ashland (Oregon) that carries a wide selection of flies I rather doubt you'd see in your area. All are highly effective (Otis Bug, Intruders, Agent Orange, etc.)for steelhead.
The other thing I've found are a few Atlantic Salmon patterns have been 'killers' for PNW steelhead. Two you want to look up are the 'Flame Thrower' and 'Volcano.' Tied on a silver Salar double ..... OH BABY!

Fred, the Salmon River (New York) is what I consider a larger river, and suitable for my spey rod. It has good runs of chinooks and some cohos thrown in. It also gets some lake-run browns in late October, and add in some good steelhead fishing later. And during the summer, it DOES get a few Atlantic Salmon, but I leave them alone, as the water gets warmer, and the fish are stressed and will die even if carefully released.
I like to fish it in early September, prior to about the 15th, and even later in the month, as the fish are still silver, and there in fishable numbers, but later than that,
with the big runs, they are dark and soft, and the mobs of fishermen come in, some even with salt-water rods believe it or not, and etiquette and slob fishing and lifting/snagging takes over, even though it is patrolled
by wardens. (I just stay away then....)
The Otis Bug patterns work well, at times, and also the Green Butt Skunk and Agent Orange, but my all-out favorite is a large egg pattern, but made of dark green estaz. Also, stone fly patterns work out well, at the right time. Strangely, later in the year and in the spring, little black stonefly patterns and smaller nymphs (flashback beadhead gold-ribbed hare's ear) in size 14 and 16 work VERY well! I know it sounds like heresy, but the little nymphs do the job! And they DO catch larger (10-15 lb. steelheadsin Mach and April!)

Remember reading (another thread) about the 'dark green estaz' egg pattern and salmon fishing; will have to get some of that and give it a try. Nothing on the agenda for the day ... think I'll put a couple of rods on the car and 'go play.'

They work VERY WELL on chrome and lake-run browns, too! But don't forget to put on a weighted bead head to get it to sink!
