I caught the 30 with Letty Potter
      #238618 - 03/19/06 03:09 PM

Hello,

I am new to this forum and I am the angler that caught the incredible 30 pound brute with Letty Potter on March 16. I will be glad to address any questions about the experience in this thread. Drop me a line and I'll fill in the details.

Tight lines... Edited to add photo....

Hi Stan, welcome. Were you able to get length and girth yet or are you waiting to go to the taxidermist? See you this fall. Oh yeah, love that moniker!

Okay, I did in fact measure the fish once I got it back to Maryland. It was rather hard to measure properly as it was dead and mostly frozen. The thing was 41 x 23.5 when I put the tape on it. I appreciate the congrats, I feel lucky to have had the chance to get a shot at a fish of this caliber. I am grateful to the Quinault Nation for allowing access to this tremendous fishery. I am happy to report that I found Letty off a link on this very site. I feel like I could not have chosen a better guide for my trip. Making the trek across the great country to fish for the fish I consider the king of all freshwater gamefish was a dream come true for me. I've been out there fishing previously, in the Forks area, and I was not very impressed with the fishery. I believe the Quinault Nation manages this fishery in a way that allows the angler a decent shot at one of these giants with hook and line. It should be known that when I hooked this fish, we were about 3 casts short of calling it a day. The bottom line is Letty fishes hard, and I highly recommend her services. Not only can she really hook fish, she is a delight to be around.

On the taxidermist question, I have not yet chosen the artist, I will let you know when I make the selection. If anyone knows a top notch, quality outfit, I am looking for artist caliber, please let me know. I consider all of my mounts works of art as well as examples of nature at her finest. In the past I've used Paul D'Angelo out of Pulaski, NY. He does great work, I have nine of his mounts, but of late he seems a little unreliable.

Thanks again Letty for everything!

Stan

Nice hog and welcome aboard. That's a 1 per life fish you got there and I hope the taxidermist/artist does justice to it.

My best wast just over 28 lbs, but that was 16 years ago.

What part of MD you from? I live in Alexandria,VA, and was just curious.

Thanks for the comments about Dave Campbell. His work looks really nice, I like the underwater features with the wood and rock. I've got a place over my fireplace in my "man's den" for this monster. I live in Crofton, MD. I cut my teeth fishing streams in this area for smallies, shad and the occasional trout. I met a guy that turned me on to the great lakes fishery. I caught salmon fever one weekend in my 20's. Once the NY state salmon scene was out of my system, I wanted to fish for something a little more sporting. I booked a steelhead trip and I landed 13 steelhead in 2 days, back in the glory days of big fish and lots of them on the Salmon River in NY. Having landed over 250 steelhead to date, (probably some sort of record for a Maryland boy as the nearest shot at steelhead is a 6.5 hours drive away) I consider myself still a bit of a novice steelhead angler. I've fished all over North America and next to Steelhead I really enjoy sea-run arctic char in Ungava Bay, Quebec. That's a blast, their tough like steelhead, taste great and you catch them by the boat load. I once had a trip up there and I estimate I landed over 500 fish in 5 days, over half of them were over 10 pounds. Over half of that half were in the teens. The largest was around 17 pounds. Make great table fare, raw or cooked. I came back with a burned up drag, busted equipment and nerve damage in my hands and arms after that outing. I'd gladly do that one again! Been back 3 times now.

See you,

Stan

Great to meet you Stan. Now tell us about the fight new [Re: WoodsyWayne]
      #238893 - 03/20/06 11:34 PM

Any jumps? Long runs? Snag-threatening lunges or other heart-stopping moments? I assure you that the mention of the rod, reel and line used will increase sales of all three . . . starting in Singapore!

* * * * *

The C&R formula for thick-bodied fish from the Skeena and Quinault systems is "(L x L x G)/ 1280". Using your actuals numbers, the formula estimates 30lbs 14 oz so it's a little heavy if the fish was 30lbs on the nose.

Using the traditional "(L x G x G)" formula, assuming a weight of 30lbs and solving for the denominator we end up with 755 (vs the traditional 800 used on "skinny fish" rivers and the 725 or so I use in BC . . . gotta make those fish bigger any way we can, right?)

Any way you slice it, it's a beauty

--------------------
Starting Sep 2012, the Skeena & tribs will be "locals only" for weekend fishing. I wanted to warn the Terrace & Smithers fishing mobs that we Yanks will be courtin' your women while you're on the river!

Congrats on the fish of a lifetime.. Ok now I have to ask. Was that a native fish or not? I have been reading on other boards and they seem to have mixed answers for this question. How can you tell the differance on the nate and hatchery fish on that river?

People that think they know it all will say its a native then whine about it. But in reality, there is no way of knowing. Unless the quinalts mark the hatchery natives some way. You just can't tell.

It is confusing. All depends on whose interpetation you go by. For instance, what if it had hatchery parents that spawned in the river, most fish from the lake hatchery spawn in the wild. Is it now native? Genetically it could still be a hatchery fish. If so is there such a thing as a genetically pure native fish left?

The best way to tell for now is if it is stubbed dorsal or not. About 98 percent of hatchery fish are but even this can be confusing since a stubbed dorsal can range from 1 bent or missing dorsal ray to a completely gone dorsal fin.
