I know this probably belongs in another forum, but I'm hoping Marty and the Mods give me a liberty here...
Gooose mentioned a new bill introduced this week by Senator Jacobsen and pals... This one would take the food fish and shellfish management AWAY from the commission and give it to the pro commercial Director to manage...
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=6053&year=2007
I am asking every one here to combat this kind of crap, not by writing letters this time, but by committing to membership in the Coastal Conservation Association. The group being spoken about all over the NW by Gary Loomis of Fish First.
To read more about them and their many accomplishments, go here
Copied from another board;
The plan is The CCA would like to help and their idea consists of creating four chapters that would make up the Pacific Northwest. They are asking for 1000 new members to be signed up by March 28th 2007. If the 1000 member requirement is not met, all monies will be returned is what I understand (second hand information). Call Tom at Auburn Sports & Marine for more information (253.833.1440). He would be happy to answer any new membership questions you have.
Membership is $25. Could be the best $25 you ever spent!

Yes - best $25 ever spent on fishing, Marsha.
A friend of mine, who's opinion I respect, spent a couple hours talking with Gary Loomis at the recent Outdoor Show in Portland. He's now convinced, along with Loomis, that the CCA is the best way to go for now.
I'll look into it more later.

I believe I can contribute $25. Looks like each chapter will represent each of the states including Idaho?

Let's get this group up and running! I have some ideas about how such a group can be effective politically. Trying to win our battles by fighting every one of them across the landscape is foolish. Why not concentrate our efforts and funds on winning a few local battles that if we win will have larger impacts? For instance my district Senator Hargrove votes for or signs on to bills that the Senate Natural Resources & Oceans committee chair Ken Jacobsen supports. So how much for instance would 1,000 political signs cost that said simply..."A Vote For Hargrove Is A Vote Against Your Fishing Rights." Plaster his district with those when he comes up for election again. Toss in some letters to the editors of all the newspapers in the district plus some paid for advertising saying the same at the last moment in the districts papers. Get Gary Loomis and some other great speakers on some radio show? But most of all concentrate every cent and iota of our energy on just several key political races. That's my strategy to win the key battles that will get us where we need to be. Win one or several of those and we deliver a message to Ken Jacobsen and his financiers.

Marsha would rather help with fundraising. She plans to ask Trouthead for donations of reels for auction.

I don't float boards, just out of preference, but is this getting visibility on other boards out there? I asked my pops who is on iFish (don't ask...) and he hadn't seen anything.

Well let's get busy then? My membership will go in this Monday. Spoke to a legislator on the phone just a bit a go and groups like PSA and RFA have lost any credibility with that body. Neither have any inluence. Time to move on to a new group that hopefully will will seek and nurture legislative support. Doc I'll gladly accept the donations for those signs...as I would just as well accept donations for signs supporting legislators who support our interests. I suspect once this group is funded and up and working people like me though will be relegated to the backwaters. My support remains. Loomis has some values that will be useful.

Here's an article to help keep your blood boiling...
Quote:
State wildlife officials say they are disappointed an Oregon gillnetter caught in the Columbia River estuary with an illegal net and 115 sturgeon last summer was fined only $1,000 in Pacific County District Court.

Thanks 6 degree d. The wife and I are now members. Is there anyone out there that doesnt believe in this company? If so could you please reply and explain why? I have heard nothing but positive things about CCA so far and dont mind donating to help out. So if you care about your kids and grandkids kids getting a shot at catching these beautiful fish I think this is a small fee to pay for them to be able to enjoy a beautiful day on the river with a FISH ONNN.... BTW im unemployed and took my weekly budget for myself to pay for this membership hoping it will go a long way.
