Early this morning there was a nice school of silvers milling around and finning along the beach at work.

i see its selective gear this year. wern't eggs allowed last year? mite make it out once if i find myself heading back to sequim with some time to kill. if not good luck to thouse that do fish it.

side note tho. i heard land owners make you pay for a access pass there is this correct? if i remember the last time i was there a few years back there was a trail that took you along the river and even a sanacan half way down,i would walk all of about 1-2 miles and never saw this?

(100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim) at 7 PM.

Sheesh, they even named the street after you, just to get you to go.

well.......how was it? Too windy to launch at misery in my boat. I love the ride in my duro up to the lab area. I was down at teh Big Bend on the N shore around Redlands/Dewatto and the wind was blowing. The sun was out and it was a great day. Made the best of it. The tides are good for me the next week. If you see a red duro, wave me down.

Yes Mr Gooose. Do tell. I'm hoping for some good news as I count down the next month. Gooose, Saturday morning the 15th I plan to be there with bells on.

To anyone who cares, right now the plan is to fish the morning of the 15th on the Quil. Then head down to Woodland to visit my grandma in the afternoon. If I don't have a limit I'll evening fish the Lewis. If not, I'm going to wait for the chime of midnight, then hit the Lewis until I drop. Sunday afternoon head back to the Quil. Hit it up on Sunday evening and Monday. Then hit the Puy/Carbon Tuesday at dawn before boarding the plane. Sleep is for pansies. I may be making requests from various people to borrow freezer space to hold my catch. Of course all eggos go to host families! God knows I'm not going to need them over here on this coast.

Rivers low and no visible signs of fish stacked above the lower bridge. I'll hit the river on Sunday. Did major damage to back again so my time will be limited on the river for a while. Ramstrong there will be fish for you in the Quil.

Got a great report on fish filtering in to the Canal. Buddy of mine Paul stopped by Salisbury boat ramp and people were nailing silvers off the dock and off the shore. None of the fish were large but still decent. Herring under a float seemed to be doing the best but everyone was packing around at least one fish so spoons and buzz bombs are working.

Fish are showing up in Quill bay and I'll be tossing gear at them nearly every day until the river starts up.

Didn't make it to the river today but talked to a local source who saw bright fish just above the lower bridge. I'll be hitting it tomorrow afternoon. Pug I'll talk to the private owner on the lower river about getting you access as part of our military.

None for me today. As Marty stated it's brief but apparently nice surges of fish. I missed out on those today and do not have the physical ability to hike the river looking for where those fish are hiding.

The action in the bay has died for the boaters. Co-workers have been averaging a fish each in the morning tossing lime green buzz bombs at Pt. Whitney. River action is continued shots of a school or two in the afternoon and evening. Skoks tried netting the bay but gave up. The run isn't here yet. New meds the Doc gave me have made me feel 10 years younger lean and mean so I'm hitting Brown Bear Hole down by Rogers Street tomorrow after work. Keep hoping Ramstrong as I am that the run waits for a couple weeks.

Looking at the reports from the ocean areas, it sounds like there are still a heck of a lot of coho stuffing themselves out there. I think Ramstrong's trip is safe.

Stopped by Brown Bear Hole on the way to Silverdale this evening.....looked dead to me....not even the summer chumlords are in thick yet. I'll fish it in the am tomorrow then spend a more productive day pursuing chantrelles and road chickens. Fish are not in yet plus the Skoks are starting to pound them in beach seines in the salt.

Ramstrong not sure what airlines your flying out to the west coast...my advice for frozen fish transport home is buying yourself (or using the one you have already got) one of those 7-day wheeled coolers pack a bag & some of your fishing gear checking it one your way out...fill it with your frozen catch & some icepacks not exceeding 50lbs & check it as an extra bag I highly doubt that you can ship an 50# AK container back home for the $50 extra bag charge the cooler costs you. Pack the fishing gear that came with you on the way out in the Extra bag you brought in the cooler!

Problem solved.

Airlines allow 2 checked bags and a carry on. A 50 pound fish box counts as a checked bag. Make sure the fish is forzen solid, and DO NOT PUT DRY ICE IN THE BOX. The airlines will not allow dry ice (I was told ice is a no-no as well, so check). Those 50 pound fish boxes work great. I checked 2 as check baggage coming home from AK, and carried my one bag on.

The plan is to fly out with my rods in a tube and gear(waders/vest etc) as checked baggage, and a carry on of all my clothes. Then, I'll pilfer a 50# box from Gooose (thanks Gooose), take it as checked baggage, and ship my rods home parcel post. This worked well last time I went back west.

DO NOT PUT DRY ICE IN THE BOX?????

You should check with the Airlines. They Do allow dry ice in small amounts( goes by poundage)
Here is the Info you need

Guidelines for Shipping Seafood

The U.S. Government has established security measures which prohibits air carriers from accepting cargo on passenger aircraft that does not originate from shippers who meet TSA requirements. Only Known Shippers will be allowed to tender cargo.

Advance Booking Required
Submit your Online Booking Request or call 1-800-225-2752. Bookings can be made 12-48 hours prior to departure. Cancellations must be made 8 hours prior to departure. All seafood must be tendered as Specific Commodity Rate (SCR) 0300.

Shipper's Responsibility
It is the shipper's responsibility to package all perishable shipments. To maximize freshness and quality, the product must be able to withstand a minimum of 48 hours in transit until pickup, without refrigeration. The following acceptance standards comply with general regulations of all major carriers.

Packaging
Freeze or chill seafood thoroughly before packaging for best final destination temperature.
Select durable, watertight packaging, preferable with insulation. Sturdy metal or hard plastic camping coolers, or waxed corrugated cartons (wetlock boxes) are the preferred shipping containers.
Wetlock Cartons
A multi-walled, waxed fiberboard / cardboard wetlock carton is the accepted container, provided one 4-mil polyethylene bag, or two 2-mil bags is used inside.
A standard wetlock carton shall provide easy handling, better stacking capability and allow for maximum cubic space capacity.
Bags must be sealed with elastic bands or nylon clips to prevent leakage.
Wetlock boxes should have the bottom stressed for 275 pounds and the top for 200 pounds.
Coated waxed cartons may be used for shipping frozen seafood.
Previously used cartons shall not be acceptable.
Containers must be sealed or secured with strapping tape, or a similar material.
Unapproved styrofoam coolers or boxes shall not be accepted by Alaska Airlines.
Gel ice packs are recommended to hold perishables at proper temperatures.
Wet ice is not allowed.
Dry ice is excellent for freezing perishables. Each container must be clearly marked with the words "DRY ICE" and the quantity of dry ice. More than 5 pounds requires the processing of Dangerous Goods documentation. Seafood shipments must be packed to withstand:
Stacking up to six feet high.
Pressure from adjacent cargo.
Crushing action of tie-down straps.
Manual Handling.
Exposure to the elements between the aircraft and cargo terminal facilities.

Grizz,
When I asked Alaska Airlines in July, they informed me that dry ice was not allowed, period. Maybe it is just a Alaska thing? I guess it is best to check with the individual airlines before you fly.

Maybe shipping via their cargo lines is different than checking the boxes on a passenger line? I don't know. I guess I would get something in writing (e-mail) from a customer service rep, so I could show it when I went to check my box.

Here you go Mojo you can Even have it as carry on

This also came off the alaskaair.com web site

Dry Ice
Dry ice may be placed in carry-on and checked baggage subject to the following limitations: In all cases, the packaging must allow for the release of carbon dioxide gas. For carry-on baggage, each person may carry up to 4 pounds of dry ice. In checked baggage, the limit is 5 pounds per package. The package must be marked with the net weight of the dry ice or the statement that the net weight of dry ice is 5 pounds or less. The name of the contents being cooled, along with the words "Dry Ice" or "Carbon Dioxide, Solid" must be on the outside of the package.

Got your call Uncle Joe. New back injury and meds have kept me off the river so no recent info. Skoks have been beach seining the bay like it meant their last meal on this planet. Even watched one net crew low hole the heck out of another to scoop up the school of silvers that came around the corner at work. I am going to low hole everyone with Krocodile spoons before work in the morning before work...they hate us for doing that. Physical therapy after work tomorrow and I'll hit the lower river on the way home and have a report. Lydia has informed me that I am to get the heck out of the house saturday or else so it looks like I'll be on the lower river that morning....sheesh the things women make us do? So bro nothing to report...if I can figure out where my fricken cell phone is buried in my truck you can call me saturday early am at 360-316-9651 otherwise I'll make a report here tomorrow nite around 7:30 to 8 pm. This having to take Mexican heroin for pain is kinda getting to become a pain itself.

BTW you got any Vision barbless hooks left in your inventory? I need about 50 at least once this thing starts to rock....couple 100 of any reasonable size would be better!

so, with the triba/commercial netters hammering the fish out in the bay (like they did last year), does the hatchery get enough fish to sustain a run?

Hatchery already has what it needs. I got to fish from 4 to 6pm. Nice shot of fish just came in. Brought home one nice hen. Practiced being a cracker on a few more. Talked to the guys who had been there all day and that run was all they had seen all day. Not that many chumlords either. It's a late afternoon til dark show and really not that exciting. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon til near dark.

Song remains the same. Fish 3:30 to 5:30 and bring home 1 nice hen. Would have fished longer but lost the desire as I got tired of hooking up with the same old chumlords.

Chris thanks...that's the same report and observations I've been making. Fish early am as possible then off the water noonish as the weather and water turns nasty. Fish haven't really showed up in mass numbers but more than enough to make the bay worthwhile. The hatchery program use to be geared towards silvers that nearly all fish returned early. The past several years of returns may be due to the hatchery program working towards a later returning fish. As that program progesses we are seeing a more scattered return over a larger period of time. Eventually the plan is for the bulk of the run to return in late September/early October.

Tomorrow was not the day. Thanks MR Gooose for the access, did you re injure the back? Pauley and I were wondering where you went. All day yesterday, there were maybe 3 pods of 10-20 that ran the river. They seem to be runnning during the night because I was able to hike up to some unmolested fish first thing in the morning. I got 8 and a 6 lbers. It was great to see you and spend some time on the bank again. Hope you heal quickly.

I'm back now and longer full trip report to come with many thanks to all involved following some rest.

Good to see that damn floppy hat thing again. Glad also to help you get free access. Back and left hip are shot and I am done with the Quilascene and any other fishing for awhile. You pretty much figured things out and got fish. Looking forward to your final report and I'll see you next year.
