What are some good G Loomis models that would be good picks for drift fishing for salmon in Idaho. What loomis rods do you Idaho guys out there prefer for this type of fishing?

I like the looks of the STR1163C. I think it's going to be a killer, but I have never fished it. I'm actually thinking about getting one before the steelhead season starts.
I do have a STR1025C, and it works well enough, but I mostly fish it as a plug rod when pulling hotshots or Brad's wigglers.
If you fish the Clearwater for steelhead, the STR1143C would probably be a great choice for you. It is IMO the all around work-horse rod for steelies.
The 1084C is a great all around Salmon rod.
All that being said, I usually fish spinning rods becaus I mostly side drift from my sled. If I was going with a spinning rod from Loomis, I'd get a STR1163S or STR1173S.

Both. If he's drift fishing off the bank, a heavy steelhead casting rod is perfect. That's what I did for years before the boat thing happened.

I dont know I think some of your rod selections might be a little light for springers even if the water flows are down if he is fishin from the bank. Now with that being said I would say go for a longer rod if your from the bank some thing in the 10' length from a boat I would go with 1083 or 1084 will work. The 1143 is great for steelies but I think its going to be a little light for salmon!

Exactly Doug, you are right on the mark.
For bank fishing the Main Salmon, the STR1086C would be a nice meat stick.

1086 is a good 9' rod if you are lookin for a longer rod 1265 or 1266 both will have enough meat to get the job done

I like my Allstar 1265, but it is a plug and diver puller in my world. I know guys that love 'em for bobber rods however.

I like the 1265 for bobber doggin and plug pullin I once heard some say you got to think out side the box They work good when you need some extra power for turning a fish thats headed down river at mach 1

I would say to the normal fisherman no they both have great feel and action but depending on what and where you are fishing I would go with the 1082 or 1083 for steelhead the 1084 is a pretty stout rod!

I pulled my 1143 out of service this salmon season and I'm talking in a boat. From shore it would be even worse. Like Dances said it's a little light for those flows and these fish. I bought a WME AKMP 106C-2 (10'6" , 1-3oz, 10-25lb test, moderate action, moderate/heavy power). If you want to stop a freight train this rod will do it. It caught a lot of fish and anybody that used it commented on it. Your in charge not the fish. A rod with a little lighter action and same power would be perfect from the bank.
I know it's not a loomis but without a doubt the best bang for the buck and I would not hesitate to use from shore on the main Salmon or little river for that matter. The reel is a Abu C3 that was sent off to Oley Damens for the performance upgrade. I also added a power handle from Bass Pro.
Loomis makes a great products but there many others out there.
The Steelheadkid should chime in on this. He's an animal and has a saw cut salmon tag to prove it.

Have both rods, and both are really nice...I don't find a sensitivity diff....more the preference for rod length. I like 9' and over rods...8'6" is okay only because I like my 1025 IMX....

1143 is way light for any real salmon fishing. i would look into an STR1025c, or an HSR1021c.

I don't understand why everybody gets hard thinking about G-Loomis. They are good rods, but I have fished them many times and I do not see ANY difference in cheaper rods.
Is it like being in a club? G-Loomis elite owner's club? I dunno, I just don't get the hype over it. Sorry. :|
I always get lost when I ask what kind of rod someone likes for fishing _insert_fish_here_ and they say "1143, 1352, 1234, 9876, $$$$, 4411" or whatever. I usually just get mad, punch them in the face, then take their wallet because you know they have $$ if they buy $400 fishing rods. Ok, I really don't punch people in the face or get mad or steal wallets. I just threw that in for shock value.
Don't get me started with Sage...
Alright, my Loomis/Sage rant is over. Once again, they are GOOD rods, but IMO not worth that price. You know, Lamiglas Certified Pros only retail for $250 but are sold in pretty much every store for about $195.00. Best rods ever!

Not that I am a professional or any thing like that but I have fished alot of rods and loomis just happens to be one of the them I can tell you that there is a big difference in what brand of rod you are using. There is no doubt that there are other good brands out there but a Loomis IMX or GLX are by far in my opinion the best rod out there as far as feel. As far as the price yea a little steep but the warrenty is second to none! Now as far as the Elite Owners Club all you have to do is by one and your in

I have to sorta agree with you Nick. I really don't have any problems getting fish without the high priced rods.I am partial to Lamiglass only because I am close to Woodland to get them repaired or replaced. I have been there at least 6 times in the last 2-3 years.Not that they are bad rods and need fixed alot, I go to pawn shops and garage /estate sales and pick up Lamiglass rods and if they need repairs, Woodland , here I come. Thats how I get my "new" Lamiglass rods.I have 4 "new" Lami's now. These just happen to be my "High End" rods and the others are cheap IM-7's,shakespears,Okuma,Fenwick,Diawa to name a few. I just use the rods to the specific water and conditions.
I guess I don't qualify to be in the club then, huh?

I prefer Loomis rods, but again, that's just a preference. Do I think they are 0ver priced? YES!!!!! Are they good rods? Yes!!!.
I have other rods I use that work just as good. I have a Griggs rod that I paid like $70.00 for that I use a lot.

Dont get me wrong I not sayin that loomis are the only rods out there I use to fish with a cabelas tourny trail rod for salmon and steelhead then I moved up to the fish Eagle II series now I think its called XML. They are all good rods with that being said there is also the factor of giving the best fisherman the worst gear and the worst fisherman the best gear who do you think is going to catch fish??? Its all about personal pref. and what a guy can afford with out the wife going off the deep end.

as insane as it sounds, if you can find one, take a look at the quantum tour edition PT steelhead rods. they only made them in 8'6" lengths, but they are extremely light and set up with the same components as an IMX(outside of the weibe style reel seat on the IMX). they've got a humped handle that's about the most comfortable i've ever held. i never even knew they existed until recently, the only quantum rods i've seen were those cheaper coldwater series that are more on par with the berkley IM7s.
i bought mine for a spare backup rod, and it's become one of my favorites. i swear, it feels about as light as a loomis IMX, and is extremely sensitive. i don't know how it will hold up in the long run, but for now it holds its own with my certified pro lamis just great.

STR1025C GL3 would be my choice if it's only a drift rod.
As far as Loomis vs other. Drift fishing is the only place I see the difference. I like Lamiglas for float rods. Oh, Loomis are light sensitive and very good warranties. Lamiglas also has good warranties. In addition, both of these brands have good resale value. I can't say that about any other brands.

Pulling plugs and diver w/ bait it doesn't matter what rod you use. The stronger the better, but sensitivity means much less in these situations. Drift fishing it is all about touch and feel, and top of the line rods are where it is at. Lamiglas or Loomis, it doesn't matter in my opinion. Our new member asked what LOOMIS rod was preferred in a certain situation, and Dances adn I tried to help. Knocking a guy for having a rod preference is a little over the top.
I have also caught a lot of fish on cheap rods, but I learned the better rods are worth the bucks.
I also agree with Southfork the Wright McGill rods are well worth looking in to. I have several drift rods, a 10'6" plug rod, a back bouncer, and a couple sturgeon rods, and they are among the best I have ever fished with. BUT, the question was asked about Loomis Rods...
