Just got word from Gary Hulsey, that shellfish managers are proposing a 4 day a week season and a limit of 4 per day. Not sure which areas, maybe all?
It's time to write the Commission and tell them NO! Here is a tidbit from Gary.
Quote:
Recreational crabbers got 1.7 million pounds of the over 35 million pounds of crab landed in Washington this year and we are not getting a fair shake
Fair shake... heh heh, is that a pun?
Anyway, here is the email commission@dfw.wa.gov You can also call 360-902-2267.

This just in! Gary forwarded this from Corey Freeman.
Quote:
The proposal will be 4 days/week with only one weekend day and a bag limit reduction from 6 to 4 SOUND WIDE. This is an attempt to look like the Department is trying to increase opportunity and take the heat off without addressing the true problem: ALLOCATION INEQUITY. This proposal has to be vigorously opposed for several reasons. First, the Department does not have accurate data in which to base their decisions on. Second, in Marine Areas other than 10 through 13 the problem can be fixed by adjusting the allocation levels to a more equitable level. Third, if the bag limit is reduced and the Department obtains accurate data that shows the reduction was unwarranted the chance of regaining lost ground is virtually impossible.
During negotiations that spawned the Puget Sound Dungeness Crab Endorsement Fee, there was an agreement that the Department would not adjust the season until at least after one full year of improved data. The Department is now backing out of that agreement and I expect the Department to oppose the Puget Sound Dungeness Crab Bill that will be introduced this session to deal with the allocation issue in the Puget Sound.
It is now time to stand up and let the Department and Commission know that any adjustments to the recreational crab season in the Puget Sound until the allocation issue is addressed and the Endorsement Fee has gone through a full year providing more defensible and accurate data is unacceptable.

I'm glad to see the F&W commission hasn't forgotten how to screw sports fishers (in this case sports crabbers). They are upholding their charter to make sure commercial fishermen get the lion's share of the resource, and the 99.9% of the states citizens who aren't commercials get the shaft. We should applaud them for a job well done!

If the limit goes to 4 a day, it will be even better for the commercials. I'm sure they don't have that kind of limit.

I just called Olytown.
On January 14 in the afternoon the “Staff” is going to present this proposal to the commission. This will be followed by public comment.
I didn’t have time to write down all the info that the person answering the phone gave me. But, she promised to e-mail me the agenda and dates and all the stuff.
If some one gets the info before me post it up other wise as soon as it come it I will.
I for one will make the drive to Olympia on the 14 and how many other days it takes.

Thanks Trex!
Let's see... 35 million pounds divided by 50% equals 17.5 million pounds for the tribal share.
If sporties got 1.7 million pounds, that means the non tribal commercial take is 15.8 million pounds statewide?
Doesn't sound very fair to me!

This is my letter of retraction.
I was caught in a knee jerk reaction due to figures presented to me buy various reports of the impending WDGF commission actions.
Although the figures appear to be correct, they are just a little deceptive. Please understand I’m not saying anyone tried to pull “one” over on anybody. I am just saying after some brief research, What I read ain’t the way it is. I will attempt to put these figures into a prospective that some folks won’t be happy with.
All figures are close enough for government work.
35,000,000 pounds State wide 17,500,000 tribal 1,700,000 sports catch.
These figures are correct as close as I have been able to determine so far.
BUT why are we talking statewide figures when this pending action only effects the greater Puget Sound area.
The figures as reported to me by a “Staffer”
Crabbing seasons for the greater Puget Sound
2002/03 Commercial 2,848,000 pounds Sports 1,339,000 pounds Total 4,187,000 Tribal about the same total of sports and commercial (remember it’s the law) Total-Total 8,374,000 pounds
2003/04 Commercial 2,877,000 pounds Sports 1,707,000 pounds Total 4,584,000 Tribal Lets figure the same again Total-total 9,168,000 pounds
2004/today Commercial still open they haven’t reached the quota of 2,623,000 Sports Closed early because of over quota 1,575,000 Tribal same-o same-o Total-total 8,396,000 pounds
So the figure of 1,700,000 for 2003/04 seems to be correct. But there are a few pounds of crab missing from the equation. Like 25,832,000 pounds to be exact.
Where’d that 35,000,000 figure come from?
Lets try adding in marine areas 1-2-3 aka the Pacific Ocean. And that my friends doesn’t belong in the equation. Why? You ask, well I’ll tell you why, causes you can go out there right now and drop your two pots and take your 6 crab. And you’ll be able to it this time next year too.
I see this debate as to allocations or do the commercials deserve about 1,100,000 pounds more than the sporty or how accurate are the figures.
As it stands now it’s static.
According to my source (the staffer) there was an overwhelming outcry for a longer season so the sporty could crab on Labor Day. As I recall it upset me, that, on the last summer holiday, all I could do was look at the Hood Canal.
As the gambler would say—You gotta know when to hold them and when to fold them.
I fold.

So what's the suggested solution for Areas 10 thru 13 this coming year? There is no one else's piece of pie to reallocate in those areas. Waiting for the next CRC estimate won't resolve that immediate problem and the legislature and the commission have no power to alter a federal court mandate. Without a reduction in limits and fishing days on the canal we'll be off the water by about mid-August and there's not a thing we can do about that.
As for the 17.5 million figure maybe the commission could be like King Solomon when faced with an issue of fairness. Split the non-tribal share right down the middle in all areas?

Great post TRex! BTW the lone Canalite on the sport advisory group was all for the reductions in limits and days on the canal. The rest of the advisors just wanted more of someone elses pie.

Gooose,
You know as well as anybody in area 10 thru 13 there ain't no Non-tribal.
So nuttin from nuttin leaves nuttin.
In the San Jauns they got a lagit. complaint. But the islanders still pulled a hell of alot more crab than the Canalers.

This proposal isn't FOR just area 10-13 though.
It's totally unreasonable to expect a Bellingham crabber to drive to Westport for 6 crab.
Why on earth would you want commercials crabbing in areas close to some heavily populated/used areas?
Ooops. Let's not forget that WDFW agreed to hold off on taking action.
Golly! Looks like commercials "historic landings" has been rising over the last 20 years, in SPITE of an increase of sport crabbers. http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/shelfish/crabreg/comcrab/historiclandings.shtml
Let's not even mention the "economics" of sport crabbing.

Was there really such an agreement? If there was then I am sure it should be in the meeting minutes or have some credible documentation.
I would still like to hear some wisdom from JD Wade or Gary Hulsey in regards to Areas 10 thru 13.

Would you really? Then why don't you email them and ask? Or does that not fit with your agenda of ridiculing? If you do, make sure and identify yourself and your interest in the matter so they know who they're dealing with.

Someone elses? You mean, they want what they are paying for? These resources don't belong to the commercials, nor do they belong to the idiot managers at WDFW who think they know it all. They belong to the citizens of this state. Now that more of them want to enjoy the resource, they'll get their limits cut by a third, and their days per week cut by 3. Not the commercials though, they've been seeing increases in their allocation for 20 years.
I have to wonder just who your looking out for here at steelheader.net Gooose? Your fellow members, or WDFW, since you always seem to take their side on every issue.
You have a conflict of interest in this matter. Once again, you've shown your contempt for the "little people".

Gooose,
Your a patient man. But just cause your a Mod doesn't mean you gotta bit your lip.
If we where on a baseball diamond and I was the man behind the mask. You'd hear, "You're outta here" along with what umpires call the BIG figure.
By the way what are you talking about with this 4:30 thing?

Corey was given the information from Lisa Veneroso. I suggest you take it up with her. If you have questions, email or call Corey, instead of taking pot shots at me for doing the right thing and posting the info here. The members have a right to know what is happening.

Doesn't seem right that only sport crabbers are expected to "lose" opportunity, since there is NO issue with depressed stocks.

It's the gesture an umpire makes when he tells a player or coach he's been diqualified. (You know ejected).
I typed that one so fast I blew it.I guess ya couldn't figure out I ment finger. Then again I think if I didn't know umpire talk I'd be asking for a clarification of the term getting the "big finger". No offense ment, but you stepped in. And it shows ya care. I just don't spell so good.

Caveman,
As I said,"If we where on a baseball diamond and I was the man behind the mask."
All a ball diamond you (a coach or player) can says about anything you want to an umpire. And beleive me I've heard most everything. But when it's made personel, it's all over.
"Would you really? Then why don't you email them and ask? Or does that not fit with your agenda of ridiculing?
MODS are like umpires, Marsha just questioned Gooose's integrity. If She wouldn't have used you or your I could have cared less.
You keep this up Caveman. Your gonna run our post counts way over limit.
