Way, way back a bunch of .220 Swift fans went out to kill all kinds of big game to show off their prowess.
To make a long story short, they made some spectacular kills ..... but if the bullet struck bone, it blew up on the surface, and left a gaping but superficial wound, requiring a long follow up, and NOT always successful.
This inconvenient example is evidence that it is not too smart of a practice to hunt deer (and larger) with a .22 centerfire rifle, at least for me.
We owe the game a little more respect.

A .22 long rifle makes for a nice close range weapon for deer. Head shot...all or nothing. Logic would tell me that a .224 would be more than ample.

I don't think "love" ever enters into the equation when out hunting for meat. There are more important benefits than sympathy when speaking of a good, clean kill.

I'll wager a guess on the first buck in the first video, how about .270 Weatherby with a 150gr PSP? The second gun sounded quieter, maybe a 25-.06 with a 130 boattail spire point? Sh*t I don't know...

You're probably close on the impact velocity, I can't recall the ballistics chart for yardage off the top of my head. But it was a 275 yard shot uphill at close to a 45 degree angle at 5500 feet elevation into an approximately 10 mph breeze, air temp was near 25F. Muzzle velocity for this round is about 3050 fps.

.270 Win, Remington 130 gr PSP Core-Lokt ammo, Haven't gotten around to loading my own yet.
Bullet hit dead square on a rib, normally it doesn't jello the flank like that, but this was a different story. Oh well, dead deer and meat loss was minimal. A little meat loss in the flank ain't bad when you got a five mile hike back to camp.

No but I have some friends that do and I've done a little with them from time to time. My Dad used to reload as well. It's something that I'm going to get into once I get my crap organized around the homestead. It's fun, somethin' you can do all year round. I can tell from folks who reload that it's much more rewarding to down a critter with something you call your "own brand" so to speak.

A guy has finite control and such things routinely bear much fruit.
I hear that, if you've got finite control it's best to max it out to the best of your abilities. I'm learning new things about my rifle every year it seems. I had some old Winchester shells that somebody tossed in a shell box, and I figgered I'd burn 'em up while I was sighting in my rifle before season. I'd never shot anything in it other than the CL loads, my Dad swears by them, and you grow up with the biases of your parents, some good, some ain't. So I'm shootin pretty well at 300 with the CL and I go and chamber the old Winchester rounds...hell I damn near flew off the whole target. Amazing how the slight variances of powder, bullet, casing, and even primer can become big ass problems at distance.

Does high load density compromise burn efficiency? Or is there a trade off where you may not get a relative high percentage of burned powder but the sheer density of powder makes up for any loss of energy?

That situation sounds like a whole lotta horseshit. I'm more of self-guided type of dude myself. If I want to hunt alone on public land, then I should have that right. But on the other hand, if I want a guide to go along to pack my whiskey, then I should have that right as well. But CHOICE is the key, or Liberty, Free Will...whatever the hell you prefer.

Ballistic Coefficient is a measure of how streamlined a bullet is that is how well it cuts through the air. It is the ratio of a bullet's sectional density to its coefficient form. Ballistic Coefficient is a measure of air drag. The higher the number the less drag, and the more efficiently the bullet cuts through the air. So for bullets flying through the air efficiently, the bigger the Ballistic Coefficient number the better.

Also the bigger Balistic Coefficient # the flatter it will shoot at long range. Powder choice and grains will highly affect how a pee shooter performs..

Personally I like 4831 I go by the book and start at the hottest load my lyman tells me and drop 1/2 grain every 3 and take er for a test shoot..Compressed loads shoot in some better then others so never think more powder is better..

SD (sectional density) is important because it has a huge effect on penetration. Other things being equal like impact velocity, bullet design and material the higher the SD number, the better the bullet's penetration.
I'm no expert but heres what I know about what I shoot a .243 (6mm) 100 grain has the same SC as a .277 (.270) 130 grain. Now most would ask "you would see them as equals for killin" answer is no. But they should inpart hold together and penetrate if they were of equal velocity and the bullet makeup was the same..

With that said I will take a 130grain flyin at 2950-3050 fps over a 100 grain flyin at 3100-3200 fps..Even though Velocity has a big part in energy the bigger, touch slower projectile will have more knockdown power. And windage will affect the 100 vs 130 more..But thats where people came be misconstrued elevation is huge as well and reloading makes a huge difference along with of course, barrel length and twist. If one decides a hotter load is better they could be making a huge mistake!

That is like compairing a 300wm vs .338 the balistics are better on the 300 most would argue this.

With all your talk of B-C, S-D, M-V & impact velocitys, you sound like a rifleman, so.... how can you be so clueless on your bullet choice??
From Sierra's website......
Match King – The trade name given to any of Sierra’s match-grade target bullets. All currently produced Match Kings are of hollow-point design, with all but one (.224 dia. 53 gr. Match King) having boat tails. Despite their hollow-point design, Match Kings are not intended to expand on impact, and should not be used for big-game hunting.
Re-read that last line a few times...

Like I stated before a heavier lug will have more knockdown if flown at the right speed.. For trajectory a 300 outperforms a 338 no doubt..Sure you can shoot a 300 grain round nose out of a 338 while your lookin at a 220 out of a 300..
We can argue all day but it comes down to preference for most!

You can toss as much bullshit out as you want, don't bitch about bullet performance on game when your shooting a target bullet at them.
With so many GOOD hunting 30 cal. bullets why would you pick the 175 gr. Sierra MK for your 300 WSM??
Its just beyond stupid....

Buzz words to the hilt being tossed around here, Don't get me wrong I believe shooting and knowing the technicalities involved is an outstanding hobby........ Someday I'll prolly get involved myself. I have a buddy who loads my stuff for me and does an excellent job. Nosler partitions in Rem 7mm mag and the 'ol 30-06. 160gr and 180gr respectively. My rifles are deadly and have proven that many times over. It's funny but I've always been of the opinion that knowing the behavior and habits of your quarry is far more important than squeezing every ounce of accuracy out of your rifle. Not to mention being physically capable of pursuing them......Not that there's anything wrong with being an expert rifleman. good on ya for covering all bases. The friend I mentioned who is a certified gun nut knows rifles and reloading inside and out....He's done work on just about every rifle I own. But he never kills $hit. I never tell him this, but he spends way too much time and effort making sure his rifles are dialed....he's missing the most important aspect....being mentally and physically prepared to do the job. A highly accurate rifle is great but not necessary.......... Obviously you guys don't fall into that catagory.....

A man can have his cake and eat it too and such things routinely interest me. Splendid specimens do not magically appear at one's feet, nor succumb vicariously.
Much to that.
Indians....Whatever. I wonder if these critters gave a $hit about sectional density or pretty (gay) camo rifles.....

Tiny deer or thier relative B&C status interest me less than none.......other than for target practice....Which is what you use them for....a Hunter? not so much.......GFY.

Good eye,but are you seeing an exit or an entrance and how much penetration was involved? It's hard to tell from the pic, but based upon your choice of weapon/ammo, I'd say those look like entrances and penetration at that part of the body was most likely a pass through.
I've zero qualm shooting stuff in the ass with an X,just as I've no qualm slapping something in the brisket...because you'll have total penetration, regardless which end of the road the travels start upon.
