With 6 weeks into re doing my back yard and with more than a month still left to go... Before I can even think of grabbing a rod. Does anybody have a good fishing story they can share that can tide me over... before I can go and share one with you all?

Well if it helps, will be working around the house tomorrow. Went out today with my son and Toby to the Kalama. The weather was great, the river was great, the hiking and wading was great. It was so nice out we all just wore shorts (no waders needed). We found some Steelies, Salmon, Trout and even the notorious Golden Bone! All in all, it was a great day!

I feel your pain MF (interesting initials) I am in the middle of a long stretch myself but did steal away for a day on a trout pond. I hit something like 50 bows to 18" in a day of fishing woolley worms from the Driftboat. I figure I got till the Cowtilla before I get to wet a line again that is "if" I get to go to that. Somebody keeps using up all my vacation time for trivial things. End of March to middle of July waayyy to long of a dry spell.

In same boat as you (but add a year lol). Have done an occasional trip, but until my back/shoulder is healed, I'm pretty much sidelined. Not sure which is worse. Not being able to fish because of yardwork or because of injury. LOL. At least I have a reasonable excuse why I'm not fishing.

I'm in the same boat as BG. Not long I will be on the Cedar. I've also got out a few times for SRCs lately and have had marginal success.

Well it looks like instead of being in my favorite camp ground, for the weekend of 7/23. I'll be staining my fence. Won't that be just as exciting as swinging a fly.

Is there such a thing as getting equal or greater satisfaction out of yard work than fly fishing? I must be getting delusional because I'm thinking so. After stroking 6 gallons of stain on the fence(5 more to go), cutting more sod, prepping for Mow curbing this Friday and taking out the back gate this last weekend. There should be a back yard forum or maybe I just haven't seen it yet.

Yeah.... but REMEMBER ....
Try a little "C & R" so your grandkids and great grandkids can enjoy the same kind of fishing!!
(Contrary to popular opinion, it ALSO works on "hatchery" fish!!!) Also, contrary to popular opinion, lots of our so-called "native" fish were originally hatchery fish, too - think about browns ANYWHERE in the US, South America, Australia, etc. and rainbows in a large portion of Idaho and the Rockies, most places east of there, Europe, S. America, Australia, etc.
Just a little something to think about!!

Bob - totally agree. Primarily do fish C&R and have yet to tag a single fish in 2004 even though have already landed plenty. About the only time I do keep fish is when fishing with someone else who would like to bring some home. I've learned some interesting information about Skamania strain hatchery fish just recently and found out it is actually better to keep those than release them. From what I have found out - that particular strain is not capable of reproducing in the wild and could actually harm native fish (got to do some more research). Always learning!
thanks

Those are some nice ones.
I am too lazy to keep fish even if I caught one. Don't know if I even remember how to clean one its been over 15 years since I did. Yes thats the truth. Given a few salmon away to other people. No steelhead killed though in that time frame.
Inconclusive here on the skamania spawning. The rivers they are stocked in tend not support wild fish. But there are many skamania strays into other rivers that do have wild reproducing steelhead. Since it has only been twenty years since they have been introduced to Lake Michigan their impacts on the wild steelhead populations are not conclusive yet.
What types of flys do those WA skamanias like ? Hot orange and pink perhaps ?

Tried Hot orange (SS fly) and got absolutely zip on it. All those fish hit either light pink or olive green. The first batch are Skamania fish, the larger girthier fish are a completely different strain (sorry spacing out on the name).

I dunno ... so far, I haven't been able to find out a lot (except lots of contradicting info) re: Skamania. (And that includes lots of time talking to Biologists on the program.)
But, I KNOW that the landlocked Lake O. Atlantic Salmon and even the stream trout that are in the one particular river at the same time DO suffer very high mortality, even when caught, landed VERY quickly and released. (All blamed on the high water temps and stress). And since they and the Skamies are all caught on the same flies (and at random), both are subject to the high risk.
Since the Atlantics have made some limited recovery, why risk the fish that was considered extinct???
So, I do what 95% of the fisherman do here in NY - don't let the word get out about the fish in the one particular river, and don't fish for them in the hottest months.
(Now, THIS year, water and even air temps are VERY low, 10 or 15 degrees below average! So, I just MAY get to go out for my birthday in a couple of weeks, if the wife is OK. And I'll give them a try!!!)

Thanks for the info on the two strains... I was under the impression that the Skamania stock was the bigger of the two. The same skamania strain stocked in a lot of our NW rivers & the Great Lakes.
As far as C&R goes I've yet to keep any chromers this year.

By popular Demand, lol I'll try to keep everyone updated on today’s back yard activities... lol All 276' of mow curbing has been laid. The remaining fence that needs staining has been hosed down again and is awaiting some of the finest Strokes I have. Most of the 7/8" minus rock has been spread out down through the RV parking.
Jerry feel free to move this Post to the Back yard forum. lol I'll see if I can get some Backyard porn pictures. Won't that be SWEET? Did I mention that today's high will only be 103...? Cooler than the 107 yesterday. Desert living @ its finest.

actually yes clay, those are old brewer and magicfly in our young crackerness. brewer found the cracker womb so comforting that i never left the comfy confines of the yella fishpoles. those pics are from the brewer archives. those go back to 82/84. pretty funny stuff i'd say. the pic w/mf holding the jack nook was on the yak/injun rez. after that pic was taken we quickly tossed that hog in vw wagon and split! we were pretty daring. now mf is a lowly bug tosser... pretty sad. he kinda quit fishing for abit, and relapsed into the bad nasty habit of fly fishing. some guys really really fall hard in the other direction sometimes. i guess it could be worse though mf could have realy crashed, like bass fishing. so thats a good thing i s'pose.

All right here's the break down of the pictures as I REMEMBER them. But first here's a little history.
I was a young Mf 16 yrs of age. After being antagonized and unmercifully thrashed on for giving up Salmon & Steel heading by Young BREWER. During those tender years between 13 to 15 years of age I took a slight detour into Sturgeon fishing. Although I have some fond memories of SF, the time was spent strategizing for my return back into S&S fishing. LOL
First picture: Young BREWER of 18 yrs, with a dandy Cowlitz Springer.
Second picture: My only claim to fame on the Yakima River below the Wapato Dam a beautiful 6pd. Springer and YES I bought a Squaw permit. I'm not sure if BREWER and the old man bought one. LOL
Third picture: (Cowlitz) Young Mf waiting patiently for the Yellow Eagle claw dude to take his fish down river so I can jump in his place. Oh and here's where the BREWER was very much influenced by the Yellow DISIPLINE. LOL
Fourth picture: (Cowlitz) Randy BREWER was most gracious in helping me lift all my winter fish except the one closet to him. lol
Fifth picture: (Cowlitz) Hey what else could I say but happier times with the old man and the two young studs... (Inside humor) lol
Sixth picture: (Cowlitz) we were always too happy to take our friends fishing... The more people pitching in for gas the merrier... besides you can only pick up so many aluminum cans on the way to school! lol
Seventh picture: (Cowlitz) Hogging on a BIG FALL run Boston Blackies they're such confident builders.
Eighth and ninth speak for them self... The BREWER making sure MICRO gets a solid dose of slime between the fingers... Micro’s getting a solid Wind River foundation.
There's the way I recall those pictures of 20 years ago. It's always fun reminiscing.

those were the days! mf is telling the truth about him and i pickng up cans to recycle for gas cash to go fishing. we worked to go fishing. then we would all pile into the ol'mans vwbus, crank up the rush and toga to the river. we would fish hard too. fish from o'dark thirty to late. they were marathon weekends. our ol'man was a trip too, he had knick names for other crackers. he is still a trip. mf was a awesome drift fisherman, he does ok now on flys. i just think mf hookup ratio would go through the roof if he would tip his fly with a large sandshrimp.

"Test for echo" on those being the DAYS BREWER! The good memories always super seed the negative ones. Funny you should mention the VW van... Lots of laughs, hard to believe it used to sleep 5. I'm serious thinking of tipping the Mf with a pink dyed prawn. I'll have a lot of missed fishing time to make up for.

THX to everyone’s encouraging PM's I'm ready to continue Today’s activities... they are as follows:
1. Tear myself from this chair. 2. Raise all three irrigation boxes about 3". Very tricky... 3. Unload the last of the top soil and wheel borrow 8 times up my steep drive way. 4. Lay and trim approx. 200' of weed barrier. 5. Lay 1/2" drip pipe and tap 1/4" tube and attach the heads. 6. Help the MRS. with moving and giving advice on where the 40 something plants should go. 7. Start the first of many trips down to nursery for Salmon rock.
That should be enough for the day. LOL Now to print this off so I can remember and stay on schedule.

You know MF, you really have your priorities wrong. Right now with my injury, I'm really limited on what I can do (pretty much zero fishing). So have had the chances to either do yardwork or work on refinishing my driftboat and driftboat trailer. Say it this way. The driftboat trailer is done and about to be rewired. Grass is brown. Now working on the driftboat.

Todays upate...
1. Tear myself from this chair. (AGAIN)
2. Raise all three irrigation boxes about 3". Very tricky... (completed!!!)
3. Unload the last of the top soil and wheel borrow 8 times up my steep drive way. (On going)
4. Lay and trim approx. 200' of weed barrier. (On going)
5. Lay 1/2" drip pipe and tap 1/4" tube and attach the heads. (On going)
6. Help the MRS. with moving and giving advice on where the 40 something plants should go. (Going better than I thought...lol Totally on me)
7. Start the first of many trips down to nursery for Salmon rock. (NOT looking forward to this! It means the projects coming to an end.)
That's about it. Sorry I didn't do more yesterday. LOL

Sounds good to me... Like I said BRING your wives and soon to bee’s... as well. Like I've been preaching the Yard Work Gospel all along. The Wife and myself are closer now than we've ever been since we were newly weds. All I want to do now is just HOLD her when we go to BED. Go ahead, come over YOU'LL spend quality time with special someone as well. After 15 years of marriage and 2 special boys and fishing every chance I got... I now know, what was missing in my life and I'm very thankful for this project to solidify this beautiful union of LOVE. So come on guys put away those rods and reels and grab your special someone and look her in the eyes and ask her what projects she wants done FIRST.

Actually. I'm using the Driftboat as a "family" project. My girlfriend (my exwife was lazier then lazy, I could barely to get her to, well, umm, nevermind. But she wouldn't do yardwork if her life depended on it). But my girlfriend grabbed one of my sanders, mask, and goggles and proceeded to help me sand that trailer down. Now she's helping me with the driftboat. Stripping the wood gunnels off and cleaning out all the dirt to start some "rematt" work on the boat. A much more worthwhile project (plus, she hates yardwork too, I'd be happy with astroturf ). Plus, for the last 5 years, well, always snuggle as we go to bed.

Well it’s been a while since I've posted on my back yard... As of yesterday it's 99.9% done. Starting next weekend I'll be jumping back on my awning... Nailing up the last of the Simpson strong ties and priming/painting. Today though I treated myself and took the day off from the yard. So I washed and vacuumed both vehicles.

Yea! Well, maybe it's time to shock everyone - today been working on the honda. Replaced the wires, distributor, rotor (what a pain!) and now charging the battery. Next might have to replace some sensors (arghhhhhhh). Finding out that honda's are not the easiest cars to work on! Oh - one of the bolts on the distributor cap was striped - that really made things interesting! Then you have to find some weird tools! LOL. Last time I checked - think the yard is still there. (sorry couldn't resist)

That explains everything now! It's about time you get that Honda RIDING MOWER working . By now it's probably futile, that grass of yours needs WATER not mowing. First things first.

Ok, did I read this right????? You took a break, by washing and vacuuming the cars???? Ok, we really need to hijack MF and take him fishing. Sheesh. He's been domesticated. Next thing you know he'll be washing and clipping the dogs.
Well, get that last 0.1% done and go fishing already.

Oh know - today was even worse: swept and mopped, did dishes, drove kids around, library books, general clean up, watered (indoor) plants and critters. Had to top it off with soccer. Whats next: The YARD! LOL. Is there a 12 step program for this new problem - dang, better get on a river tomorrow; quickly!

Ok, hopefully this will be my final post and this thread can go silently into the archives...
Completed nailing up the Simpson strong ties, hung 30' of Venetian blinds, drilled/installed 1/2'' running thread through ties, finished 2 coatings each of primer/paint. Will be calling for the bldg. inspection for Friday.
I am a little pissed though. Last weekend I put the kid’s swimming pool on the grass for 20 minutes or so and over heated an area of 12 sq. ft. I still have to cut up the excess lumber for fire wood and stain the back side of the gates.
Shoot I just remembered I’ve got to clean out the garage and shed.
So I guess as of right now I'm 99.99% done.

Geez. At this point, it'll be December and you'll be 99.999999999999999999999999% done. Sheesh, just go fishing.
