"Crappy Little Fly" Strikes again
      #146382 - 11/12/04 10:34 AM

It really is fun to share - got another email were
a gent tailed 6 in a couple hours with the "crappy
little fly". It really is an awesome feeling to be
helpful - Really needed the encouragement to continue
with a very important project. Have a real goal to
help others enjoy some serious fun!

Clay,
My experience tells me that your technique is more important than your fly, but who am I too say. I sure haven't had comparable results to you in my fishing. I haven't as yet given your fly a good test, but I will in the future.

Verne, catch a bunch for me. I've always started with
the fly and worked backwords. I just catch a lot of fish,
a lot of big fish, and have plenty of fun doing it - but
what do I know.

see ya

Apparently the steelhead haven't attended the latest Spey Clave to find out what acceptable (i.e. "non-crappy") patterns they "should" be taking.

The last time I checked, sharing information, helping others succeed, and being enthusiastic about your own and other's success are what websites like this are supposed to be about.

Keep up the good work Clay, - I know you're on to something, and I'm not alone!

BTW, maybe some people would identify with the SS pattern better if you added jungle cock to the recipe.

Yes jungle cock would be a nice addition to the SS and if you find some cheap JC capes let me know. LOL Might even want to add some JC to my egg patterns if its cheap enough.

Jungle Cock ? ... I don't think so, I mean I guess you could if you wanted to (snicker) If you got Clay to tie more than two materials together your doing pretty good. Hey Clay went to the NFL yesterday and Caught a 25 lb King. she was pretty black though thru her back and caught a 15 lb silver. no Steelies spotted though ! and NO I wasn't using your Fly. I was using one of my flies. Havent got a name for it yet. But it is a variation on a Welch Shrimp pattern dated from the 1800's. I clipped one steelhead/Salmon hook and put a loop of 20lb backing on it and tied another Steelhead hook behind it to give it more life. Works like a charm.

Actually my comment had nothing to do with fly materials, but was really intended as a subtle reference to a particular "personality type" commonly associated with arrogant, condescending attitudes. To be specific, the slang term I had in mind can also be used to describe a slight piercing injury as you might get from a thorn. However in this case, I think the plural form of the personality usage is appropriate.

My apologies if I was being excessively cryptic.

Silverfly, I got it. LOL.

But Hal, I can get you "inexpensive" JC capes. But still at my price, they're expensive. But about as cheap as you're gonna find without finding a breeder. LOL.

I still do not have any JC in my massive fly tying material inventory due to my frugalness in not wanting to spend $ 100 plus for a cape. My fly shop owner does not even carry it. Here I am incomplete fly fisher without JC and at my age too.

I am going to have to do something about this and soon !

I have a poor mans way of imitating JC from pheasant feathers I wonder if that is good enough for the fish ?

Hal, I do have half a JC cape if you're interested. I have plenty still from my original cape (I bought in half of one for an older group order we did so that another member could get a smaller amount since I know I'd use them eventually). But if you're interested in half a cape, let me know. Only be about $35 shipped to your door.

Don't assume someone is breaking the law Ster, obviously summer run fish.....the Cowlitz had a 3 fish limit midway through the summer. 3 + 3 = SIX. The sound of this thread is irritating as is the snotty banter.
Good job SH86, Silverfly got me into my first Fly fishing steelies last summer using his secret fly pattern. Keep up the good will and never mind the naysayers and snobs.

Actually there were 3 of us fishing that day. The 3rd guy is taking the picture. We put all the fish on a stick to make it easier to carry them up a steep embankment.

MF, Silverfly, Musicman - thanks! Sterling was just giving
me some smack, no harm done. Finally realized some others
will never be accepting of new ideas just based on human
nature. Oh well - no ones perfect. Yea, a different Steve
came along that day, so we were all able to bring a couple
fish home. I stopped counting after tailing 10! If there
is fish in the river, I really do know how to get them -
a little bit of luck helps too!

Listening to some WA steelheaders the last three years one would think there were no steelhead left in the state. Guess my conscience may be able to justify a trip out there to bother some of those Brats at least, I will go easy on the wild ones.

My apologies Sterling, Didn't know you guys were buds....but, in my defense I wasn't making a judgement, from the outside looking in it would appear to be malicious. Don't mind friendly ribbing amongst SH.net members. Just don't want this site to sound like iFish. Once again, my apologies....keep up the good wo
