Hi all,
Planning a trip to AK this June for Fathers day. I need to start tying now. So once again I tap into this wealth of knowledge with this question in mind: What flies should I be tying (colors inc.)for salmon fising on the Kenai, Russian, and Deshka rivers in mid to late June? As always, everything and anything is appreciated. Thanks.

1) Hot Pink Bunny Leeches, 2) Chartreuse Bunny Leeches (both heavily weighted like wrapped hook shanks/.032 and big barbell eyes) and 3) bucktails with pink and white, green/white, red/white. I did best in AK on really heavy flies, that got down quick. Most rivers I fly fished were moving faster than I thought they would. If you think your fly is heavy enough, it probably isn't...

Another thing, don't waste your money/time on flesh flies. In june there won't be any rotting carcasses in the river. Probably very few eggs either.
I forgot to mention Flash Flies. THey can be killer as well. The venerable Egg Sucking Leech and just a plain black or purple Woolly Bugger work great too.

So I have begun to accumulate an arsenal of flies. I started mesing around with egg yarn and tied a bunch of a particular pattern that I thought looked like money. Thougt I'd run it by ya'll for pointers.

Most TV programs I have seen rely on plastic beads to imitate single eggs well above the hook! When the fish grabs the bead, a quick set hooks them!
Although I'm not crazy about the idea, it seems to be the main "trick".
I think I'd start getting a selection of beads in various colors and shades.... just in case. That seems to be a good strategy!

Looks like a good selection Jake.
One tip if I may, Tie the coho flies a little more sparse. Big guady flies spook the fish more in the clear water of the Russian, also I usually trim the hair right at the hook bend.

Alaskan, Too long and too thick you say? Alright. Thanks for the info. I had been tying them super sparse but I saw some pictures online and they were all tied real thick. Guess I'll change back.
Tony, the flies on the lower right are some Yallerhammers (peacock with chartruese hackle) and chartruese wollies. There are a couple of Chartruese bunny leaches in there with barbell eyes.... why? Is it a hot ticket?
BobK, are you talking about fishing Kings with a single bead? Or is that more for the Reds? Do they actual eat it or are we talking about lining fish here? Thanks.

I think the "idea" is akin and close to "lining" the fish, and like I said, the idea doesn't turn me on. But it seems like a lot of guides have their clients (and some TV personalities) do it. I guess it is legal there, and the fish photographed at landing have the hook in their mouth. They were quite a variety of salmon species, rainbows, etc.
But again, I wasn't turned on by it!

Fishing beads is mostly a trout thing. The big bows and char follow the salmon to the spawning grounds. I heard they have change the legality of bead fishing, theat the beads have to be pegged within like 3 inches of the hook. I'm not in favor of fishing beads, as it seems too close to flat out lining for my tastes, but to each his own...

Bob, hook in the mouth is fine by me. To me that shows that the fish is taking the imitation, not just getting boot-legged. Proly wont try it though. Good coment, Jo. To each his own. Here's a question: how does fishing a bead differ from floating a corky?

You are fishing a neutrally weighted plastic bead on a fly leader with no weight, anywhere from 3 to 10 inches above the hook. Some guides I know use more than one bead, spaced 4 inches apart. They are fished dead drift. I have no problem if the bead is permanently affixed to the hook (or immediatley above the hook). Once you move the thing 10 inches up the leader it starts to smell like flossing.

Jake,
The bead deal is mostly a trout pattern, and it is usually a mid-July and later deal. Same with flesh flies. When you are there (Mid-late June), the salmon will just be starting to spawn, and the trout and char will not be feeding on the eggs too much yet. You originally stated you wanted salmon patterns. Those buggers ought to work fine. So will many of the other patterns I see in your box.
I'd keep tying heavily weighted flies in bright colors (Chartreuse/hot pink/orange) and throw some flash on some of them.
For the sockeye, the Russian River specials work great, but I agree, yours are a bit bushy and a bit long. I like to wrap the hook shank with silver tinsel on some.

I think I got too caught up in the excitement of going to AK and over-tied. I would bet that I have well over 250 flies JUST for Alaska. Here is a sampler of what I am taking. Let me know if there is anything you DON'T see that I will need. Thanks.

The salmon killer special has yet to be unveiled. I still have not collected enough Persian kitty whiskers and Hippo nostril hair to complete a working prototype.

What's the problem with the Hippo hair? Save for swimming in a river in Africa, a quick visit to the local zoo should handle that 'minor problem.' 
Interesting thing about the Chart WB's is several of us fished the (same) fly in 'standard' and day glo materials; the day-glo hooked Chums 3 to 1. Gin clear/lowish water, but why one would get/hold the fishes attention better than the other?

Same deal with the pink Fred. On that same river, the "hot" cherise and "hot" pink outfished the regular versions hands down. Great trips up there weren't they?
