FF "Extreme Makeover"
      #72933 - 09/01/03 06:06 PM

I caught (by chance) a reality TV show called "Extreme Makeover" last week in which they take poorly groomed men and women and do an extreme make over. New hair, clothes, facial surgery etc...

Think I am going to apply this to my fly fishing appearence on the river this fall.

Instead of having a bulging fly vest weighing 10-20 lbs with bulging pockets of hundreds of flies that I don't use and looking like telephone line repairment, etc..

I am going to do an Extreme FF Makeover and go very light with limited flies, and backup equipement on the river.

Perhaps no one will recognize me, and I think I will not get as tired lugging all of that extra weight around with me.

Yes its time to go light !

The Extreme Makeover is in process.

LOL

LOL Hal, GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!! I have went through periods with my gear and fly vests over the years. I know at one time my vest MAXED out my digital scale (stopped at 50#'s). LOL. Couple extra spools of lead, boxes of jigs, spinners/spoons, then pips filled with leaders, rainjacket, etc. Weighed a ton. Then, same thing with flyboxes. I used to carry a TON of flies. Just about any I could think of. Plus, extra spools with different lines, and some of the same misc. stuff from above. I try to ONLY bring 1-2 fly boxes MAX. Then, some misc. fly supplies I may need (leader material, etc). Same with my gear vest. BUT, after awhile I slowly put a "needed" thing here, or a "wanted" thing there. Next thing I know, my vest weighs a ton again.

Think I have it figured out now. I simply unload the vest everytime unless I'm fishing same river/area next. Helps keep the vest down in weight. USUALLY. Sometimes I start tossing things in. And, if I'm bringing the fly and gear at same time. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Damned thing needs a handtruck to get it to the river.

But, every few years, I stop and unload. Then reload what I ACTUALLY need. LOL. I

Giggle...chuckle...

I will believe THAT when I see it, Hal - you wouldn't last 5 minutes before having to run to the car, drive off to the nearest fly shop, and "resupply"!

I know - every year, I say to myself, this year will be different. BUT IT'S NOT!

Fishermen are all alike, and have the same mindset when packing gear as if they were leaving for an expedition to Everest! I know - my son-in-law got a hernia last time I asked him to hand me my FF vest!

Why is everything "Gotta have it with me in case of emergency?" and a mindset of "But what if?"

Fly fishermen are fly fishermen - halfway through your first trip, without the "secutity blanket" of a well-stuffed vest you will be so frustrated, you will either leave, give up flyfishing, or have a nervous breakdown!

The over stuffed vest is the way to go. I tried using the Fanny pack system but I kept loosing to many things. Two pairs of clippers. A leader straightener. And when I took a tumble into the river My camera was along for the soaking. It doesn't pay to get a digital camersa wet. Hence a new camera. (they don't repair one that get wet).

Makeover is in process despite the above comments. I am sick of lugging all this extra stuff around the rivers waiting for the one moment that never happens when they are needed.

Have a doubles of many things: gloves, flashlight, clippers, flies, reels, lines, leaders, sunglasses etc.... Time to go solo on some or all of these things.

I will take a picture of the extreme make over GLs steelhead fly fisherman for you when I am done. You will see.

Well, once I'm back on my feet, have the vest I'm going to buy for flyfishing. Going to get the William Joseph Coastal Pack. Expensive, but everything I want in a vest. Plus, want to see how full I can fill it. LOL. Tried them out, and I like them.

I agree Jim, I had a chest bag from Cabela's (basically a fancy butt pack) and lost more stuff using it. Nothing was easily accessible. I found that those "extra pockets" are worth their weight in GOLD!!! But the coastal pack will give me the freedom of movement I want on my boat on the oars, and still hold stuff I need. Then, I'll devise a secondary pack to fit on that one (like an emergency shoot on a parachute) and stuff that too.

I looked at the Coastal paks nice and pricey, there are others now coming on the market from different manufacturers. Look around.

Really we do not have to carry all of this stuff on the river. Once in twenty years have I needed a backup reel after a hot wild PM steelie took my Martin apart in the middle the river, lost that fellow, line was a complete birds nest had to walk a mile back to the car for my other reel, and then back to the hot area.

If Bob wants to carry all of that stuff so be it.

I've been checking them out too Hal. But for some reason the coastal caught my eye. Plus, fealt well good doing rowing motions (best I could anyways lol).

I won't be buying for god knows when. So will make that decision when I finally have $$ in my hand.

I've seen the Coastal actually my fly shop owner ordered them when I told him last year the other Joseph ones he had in were to small for my steelheading needs. Then I thought the Coastal was to small, but now that I am going through a "Extreme Make Over" (LOL) I will reconsider it, but I have found another lite type Coastal vest that now has the fancy of my eye. Except I have not seen it first hand yet.

It looks better than the Coastal.

Aah the constant pursuit of new fly fishing equipment its enough to make a grown man cry and give up.

Its my birthday in a few weeks so to celebrate my good health and familys and the start of another football and salmon/steelhead autumn season I will treat my self.

Sure you can, Buzzy! You REALLY don't need all the fancy equipment to have fun, as I discovered as a kid! Tie your own flies, make a lot of your own stuff, and you CAN do it, and at a reasonable cost. I'm just a plain retired guy - no $500 rods to "pose" with, and I just keep an eye out for "firesales" when they close out a line of rods, reels or lines! Amazing how much you can save with an "old" model that sold for 3 times as much. But you just have to chase down firesales when they are rumored.

Did someone say "fly fishing equipment fire sale" ?

LOL

Bobk you know what I am looking for and I hope my needs are in your mind as you surf the net each day for fly fishing deals as us working stiffs wallow through corporate gooblycook, etc... I will take care of you I promise if you come through with another great find like that LA reel earlier in the year. And if you ever find a 5120-4 in a fires sale of course I owe you big time.

The only thing that costs is the junk you go buy for tying flies. You go in the shop for a certain thing and come out with stuff you think you neeed and stuff you shouldn't of bought.

Yeah, Hal, I'm keeping my eyes open. Boy, there were a BUNCH just about a year ago. But I haven't seen any lately except Winston - they have some "closeout" rods for sale at
$200 off - but still pretty pricey! Had my hands on a 10' 7 wt., but the temptation didn't get through to me!

I know what you feel on buying new stuff. Matt fishes with spey rods only and the temptation to go out and get a spey rod is just about killing me. But I think I got it licked. I keep telling myself that you are getting to old to buy a new stick. Besides I don't catch too much with what I have now so why waste to money on something that won't work either. Questions, questions, questions. .

Just wait this bad econonmy has to trickle down and impact the fly tackle vendors, I predict big bargain sales by year end, so hold on and keep looking for those spey rod, reel, and line sales. Never give up and be patient.

2. I believe the sales when I see 'em! Then I'll let everyone know.

Yeah, something odd happened after my computer died Hal. When I reuploaded my printer/scanner, it actually started making good quality scans. For some reason there was a glitch in transfer with old HD, so came out crappy. Now, works good, so tried a scan of the fly. Came out much nicer then the digital pic. So changed it out.

I think the scanners do a better job on close up fly pictures than the digital cameras from what I have seen.

The princess says she wants a fax and scanner added to our new home PC so I will make sure the scanner part of it is a good one. LOL and she will pay for it writing it off as a realtor expense.

Hal, while you're "upgrading", they now make combination scanners, copiers, fax machines and printers - all in one.
Now THAT would be an answer - everything in one package! No multiple software to interface with, etc.

Bob, that's what I have. The all in one. But, with my old harddrive, for some reason transfering pics from my scanner to my HD blurred them up. It's like I have a brand new machine after the new HD came home. That same pic above would've been really poor quality. Nothings changed on my computer except the HD. Weird. May have been a glitch from get go?

Makeover is progressing well. Increased daily physical workout schedule : running and weight lifting has dropped my weight to 192. Was 205 2 months ago. Objective is less weight to carry on the rivers this fall and winter, more stamina, etc.

New FF on river storage system in plan/desgin phase.

Hey Bobk noticed S+W advertizing again in this months issue of Fly Fish of America. They must think us fly fishers really need these. Bet no one or any animal would mess with me if I had one of these with me on the river. May impair my fly casting though looks a little bulky to carry in a shoulder holster.
