Uuhhh, Aug 1 seems to be sticking in my head. Usually, it's mid-week just before the Aug long wknd in BC (1st wknd), but I'm on vacation and the brain is roasting as temps hit 104 F at by 1000. I'm catching bass before dawn and after dusk, and hiding out in the A/C in between
I'm on a really slow dial-up connection down here in Northern Californiaweird, so it would take too long, but follow the links from hubsports.ca I know they're in there somewhere. The guide links are often quite out of date and <ahem> prone to exaggeration, but this yr is supposed to be a big one.
I'll also call Dad sometime this wk and ask.
FJ - you gonna hit Isl. 22 again? We'll probably be at Grassy or way up at Spaghetti

Not sure yet where we will be fishing. We will b up there the first weekend it opens. Usually the first week in Aug.

The sockeye return and chinook return has been so low that there is now some talk of no season on sockeyes. The spring chinook return has been 20% of the forecasted number. The early sockeye are also way down just like ;ake washington sockeye. If there is an opening, it will be around August 1, but it is not looking promising at this point. Chinook flossing has picked up recently for those that like to do it.

Dunno where that talk is coming from. None of the guys my Dad has been fishing with the last few wks are having trouble. It's slower than usual right now, but still producing.
At least there's some pretty girls catching sturgeon

Saved too soon - I just read the DFO report - based on early data (keyword = EARLY) the 'Early Stuart and Early Summer-run sockeye runs' are low. The EARLY Stuart run hasn't been good for a long time. Wasn't it just last yr that they almost closed the river to all rec fishing for a week so they Stuart run could make it through but the Sto:Lo defied the ban and netted them anyway?
The Test fisheries at Whonnock are a lousy place to do the tests, but that's old history and nothing but politics.
The next update is scheduled to occur on July 19.

Oolichan and I are gonna try to plan something... just waiting for the opener announcement. I'll be further upstream this year I think. There are some nice islands in the middle of the river just above the Herling island launch. NOWHERE near as crowded as Grassy bar. Shoot me an e-mail when you get a date locked in.

Herrling island is above Chilliwack and Rosedale. You just keep going east on Hwy 1. I'm not exactly sure which turnoff to take but maybe Workin' can help us with that.
Have you got the map of all the Fraser bars and access points? Go to www.anglingbc.com, click fishing reports, then scroll down and it's on the left of the page. If you look at the map, you'll see the islands just upstream of Herrling, that's where I think I'm gonna be this year.
So far it looks like it might not be a good year for sox after all, but were keepin' our fingers crossed. Weird thing is that when I was up in Alaska this June, all of the sockeye runs were early and HUGE!

During
the last few days the abundance of Early Stuart sockeye in the river and
approach test fisheries has increased with the total accounted for return to
date reaching 44,000. At this time the Early Stuart return is expected to
exceed 50,000. In addition the run timing of Early Stuart sockeye is estimated
to be at least five to seven days later than the pre-season assumption of July
3 in Area 20.
<NOTE> These numbers are not actual data that is publicly available, but released by a 'panel' - few members of which are likely to be actual biologists rather than bureaucrats or 'parties with vested interests' . Look for yet another massive commercial opener, just when the runs look decent.

I don't specifically target the springs Coho, but I don't complain when I hook 'em either! I'm not real picky about what kind of fish mouth my leader slides through.  
First time I fished up there (herrling) was last year and we hooked more springs than sox. I usually fish Peg-Leg, Grassy, or one of the other bars near Island 22.
I hear the river's up a bit so hopefully that should get the late summer run sox moving.

0 for 4 on Springs--one thumb burner at the mouth of the Vedder-pullin plug. 1 6ft Sturg--fishing is slow. Fish checker said 1 fish on Sat reported. what up wit dat???

Just checking.Wish some of our locals were as good at reading regs.As for a report;the Fraser is dropping/clearing and doing o.k. for springs.(Vedder/Chilliwack also)As for sockeye;the Fraser panel's release today- limited first nations opening beginning this weekend,no commercial,no recreational openings.Fish are about a week late.(maybe open next wknd??)Next update from the panel will be on Tues Aug 2

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Figures. Let the First Nations net the heck out the run first.
I'm on the phone with my Dad right now. Lots of hits up this wk above Spaghetti bar. (Above Agassiz bridge)
Dad or his buddy have boated a few 20# + but now most are in the 15-20 range right now. They saw a 32# in a guide boat at the take out this wk.
Here's a few spots to try, based on what Dad is recommending.
Herrling (no longer launchable)
Gill Rd below Agassiz bridge(launch)
Spring Bar (well above Herrling - only accessible by boat )
Lower down:
Wellington, Grassy, etc are crowded. Isl 22 has changed enough that few fish it anymore.
Don't bother with the Vedder yet. a few more weeks.
This wknd is CDN long wknd and in 2 wks is the Abbotsford Airshow which can really mess up traffic at the border crossings so plan accordingly.

Have made a couple trips. Last trip, no springs, and only saw a few sockeye caught.
My uncle was up on thursday, they had 4 springs on and only boated one. He said he saw a couple socks caught, and they were pretty small.

Closed for Commercial, closed for recreational, open of course for the First Nations poachers. Hey, after all, they've 'only' taken 31000 so far, and the runs are considered extremely late. Or at least, that's all they report having netted. Bycatches are not reported of recorded, but of course, they never take anything but their targetted species right?

Coho, I went up this last weekend as kind of a scouting trip. I launched (barely) at Herrling island and ran around the north tip and camped on a bar about halfway down on the main channel side. 1 spring (about #25) 2 sox and a pink landed in about 12 hours total of fishing time. First Nations had their nets out everywhere. Water is dropping fast (about 8 inches overnight) and has about a foot or so of vis.
Pretty slow salmon fishing overall, but I couldn't get over the amount of sturgeon I saw surfacing in the area. I graphed the bar just upstream from me and it dropped from 6' to about 35' pretty quickly and the current was a bit slower. Many salmon rolling in here (pinks I think in the slack water) and the sturge were in there too. I wish I would have brought sturge gear with me, but I don't have the right kind of anchor system to hold in anything more than about 10' of water up there. Right at dusk, and all night the springs were rolling in the area. I think the bar I was fishing may have been a bit too deep for effective bottom bouncing. Man! it was about 90 degrees and hardly any wind. Kinda miserable when there isn't much shade around. Luckily too, no one broke into my truck!

So 4salt- can you refresh me where Herling Island is--that sounds like a better -less crowded area--is the run too far if I launch at I22?
Try casting or trolling some mag warts with those fish rolling--I trolled mag warts below vedder and had 4 fish hit /I missed--one thumb burner. Michael Jackson was the hot plug

Only if I would have been fishing out of my boat Workin'. The injunction as I understand it was intended to prevent anchored sport boats from interfering with FN drift netting. Bank fishing (what I did) is OK.
Coho, I thought of all that but I left my plug box at home, I just had my BB stuff. It wasn't a real fishing trip for me... more of a campout look see with my girlfriend.
Herrling is about 15 miles upstream of Island 22. WAY too far to run from there. Keep going east on HWY 1 past Rosedale / Bridal falls and you'll see a sign for the Herrling island exit. It's a left lane exit and as soon as you're off the Hwy, turn left onto Herrling island rd. follow it to the end (1/2 mile or so) and you're at the launch. My boat is a 14' Smokercraft with a prop, that's why it was a bit difficult for me to get to the main river. If you've got a pump, it'll be a lot easier.
There were lots of sport boats running up and down the river but no one was camped anywhere near me. It's worth checking out of you want some solitude, but if it opens for sox retention this week I don't know how much of that you'll get. I think fishing might be better downstream (Island 22 area) but I'll probably go back and fish up there again. Maybe in a couple of weeks, and I'll have a good anchor and some plugs and big spinners. Sox still closed for sporties.Next update on Fri. Aug 12.The temp injunction(should expire today)was only enforceable during the D.F.O. sanctioned drift-net opening on Sat. Native fishers had R.C.M.P. escort to clear the drift of any anchored boats.Have not heard any recent news of the continuing court proceedings/further temp or permanent injunctions,or further drift-net openings

The Fraser River Panel met today, August 9th to review assessment data on
Fraser River sockeye salmon. The abundance of returning Summer Run Fraser
sockeye continues to be substantially lower than expected for this time period.
Based upon pre-season expectations the maximum daily Fraser River Summer run
sockeye migration was forecasted to occur through the marine assessment areas
around August 8th. However, the daily migrations of Fraser River sockeye
continue to track far below expectations through both Juan de Fuca and
Johnstone Straits. It is possible that the timing of the Summer run stock
group is late, however, the continued apparent weakness to Summer Run to date
is causing concern that the return will be substantially less than forecast
levels.
Migration conditions for sockeye in the Fraser River continue to be favourable.
Discharge levels in the Fraser River (at Hope) measured August 9th is 3,200
cms, which is slightly below average levels of 3,400 cms. A water temperature
at Qualark Creek is 18.6 degrees Celsius and is forecasted to increase to about
19.3 degrees Celsius by Aug. 11 before dropping down to 18.6 degrees Celsius by
Aug. 18.
First Nations
It is expected that First Nations targeting Fraser River sockeye fisheries in
Area 29 and the Fraser River will continue this week, an update will be
provided on Friday August 12th following the next Fraser River Panel meeting.
Recreational
Sockeye retention remains closed in the Fraser River. Opportunities for the
commencement of Fraser River sockeye retention will be reviewed and an update
will be provided on Friday August 12th.
Commercial
Remains closed. Opportunities for the commencement of any assessment or
commercial fisheries will be reviewed and an update will be provided on Friday
August 12th.
The next update will be Friday PM, August 12th following the next Fraser River
Panel meeting.

Of course there's concern, just not from the openly criminal organization known as the Sto:Lo council. The Cheam band is the most visible. I guess if you don't think the law applies to you, you can somehow justify breaking it openly.
Who illegally buys this illegal catch?
Tourists, restaraunts, fund-raising BBQ's, small grocery outlets, large grocery outlets, you name it.
"OH, but it's so much better than that farmed salmon..."
Anyone here knows how much the price is? I don't wanna know how they know.
