Springer/boat rods
      #360799 - 01/07/09 01:18 PM

I'm considering getting four of these rods for mainly springer rods that would double as trolling rods on pend orielle and priest lake, I'm thinking 10'. What do you all think of the cabela's fish eagleII salmon steelhead kits?

Well don't try to eat them

What ever brand you get make sure it has decent warranty and turn around is quick. You really don't need a super nice fancy rod for springers or any other fish. I will admit a longer 10' rod with backbone does give you a better advantage IMO. I plan on putting the now 9' Rainshadow out this year and the St Croix. If they explode on a fish or get caught in the prop at least they went down with a fight.

Also0 keep your eyes opnen for Shimano Clarus Rods. They'll do fine. I don't know if Shimano majkes a 10.5 footer in that model, but I know they make them in SOME model.

to answer the question, the kits are total junk, but the blanks are good!

the kits don't contain enough epoxy to build a rod, the guides are crap, terrible chinese cork etc.

best way to do it is go through cabelas for the blank(they're around $39 or so), then buy the rest of the components through a rod building supply house like angler's workshop or mudhole.

What I am trying to do is pick-up a little better quality rods and get rid of some of the misc. sh8t that I have. I do a fair amount of trolling on priest and some time's pend orielle, I figure any rod that I use for springers could double for that nicely! If I was only getting one or two I would defintely go Wright mcgill, might anyway, just not right away since I want Four!! Thanks for all the input!! Not really sure that I want to BUILD four identical rods?

Gene, I am planning on trying out those reels on these rods, did you see that combo deal on the internet? If so send me the link? Thanks

Eagleclaw Starfire SF403 page 124 or Water Eagle WE504-10 same page. Nothin better then a Yeller rod.

I'm pretty sure color doesn't matter but warranty and cost does. Especially when you want four of them.

I probably have about the same scenario as you. I have four Shimano Clarus X80M, extra fast action 8', medium weight. They were developed for pulling hot shots, etc., I have them set up with two Okuma Catalina line counters and two Abu's. They're plenty muscular enough for chinook, and I jig for whitefish and lake trout and troll for lake trout with them. Best of all, lifetime warranty and only about $60, IIRC. Really good rod for the money.

Is there more than one version of the Wright McGill rods? I looked at some the other day at Bob's Surplus in Longview and didn't see or feel anything particularly special. Seemed awfully heavy to me among other things.

Are these the ones you were looking at? I have 4 and they are not very heavy (comparably), and are very strong. I like them for everything from sturgeon to trout.

You don't need custom Mr. Rainshadow. Custom rods are nice and IMO Rainshadows are very nice but warranty or repair on a custom wrapped rod is a major pain in the ass. WM warranty can be done in a week and that's shipping time.

When I fished 5 or 6 times a year I could justify a custom wrapped rod(s). Fish 3 times a week every week and add in fishing with less experienced people you equipment takes a beating. Dumbass things happen and when a high dollar rod breaks and you fish all the time you need your equipment. I do not have the time or patience to wait on a custom to be repaired. I'd rather by a high end production rod and be back on the water without the grief.

While you posted I have a custom 1143 that had a high speed mishap with a low bridge at night. Steve wrapped it and there wasn't any expense spared on this rod. Care to explain how I go about getting this repaired? Shouldn't take much, there's only 6" missing including the holographic guides

Kevin hooked me up, he found some at BS in lewiston 10'6" Wright & McGill Magnum plug rods, saved me $60/rod!! Sweet, now I just need some line counters! As long as I don't let the cat out of the bag the wife will never know the difference, there is no way that she couldn't possibly know if I ever bought a new fishing pole!

Exactly. You set all your lines out so you have a "wall of death". Cuts down on tangles if all lines are the same lenght IMO...

Another reason I like them is if you are fishing people that are Green to fishing you can tell them to let out 60ft.-65ft.-55ft. ECT. and have all the lines out about the same. Instead of a non counter some may not pay attention on passes or loose track and you could have some short and some long lining. If I was a guide trolling alot I would not have a reel that wasn't a LC. LIL

I know alot of you like the Tekota reels, have any of you used Cabelas Depthmaster Gold Line counters. Looking at them since they are left hand retreive! Seem to have mostly good reviews on the web site! So is there any personal experience here?

I was lucky enough to pick up a Tekota 300LC and a 500LC used/like new condition via Ebay auctions a year of so ago for good prices. I love em and would like to get a couple more but Ebay is out for good deals...been watching the auctions since and the "idiots" are pushing the bids for used reels to the extreme, and the new ones are more expensive than if I'd buy em locally. Suspect I'll eventually have to bite the bullet and buy locally...sure wish they'd have sales on em but haven't heard of any thus far.
