I'm intrested in picking up a pup in the next couple of months. Leaning towards a Lab ether blonde or yellow. I'm not a hunter but looking for a good boat dog with an excellent temperment. You folks have any ideas? Male or Female? Pros or cons of both?

Female. And find a designer dog. It's the "in" thing to do. My fav.... Lab/golden mix.

Your the second to woman to give this advice Marsha. I had a golden for 13 years and he was an excellent everything including being a boat dog. I'd rather not deal with long hair breeds for easy of grooming. I've been told if you want to get an accountant get a Lab. If you want a comedian get a Golden. I want to stay away from designer dogs and I want a lighter colored companion for the heat factor for those long days in the blazing sun fishing.
Can I ask why you said female?

My thought is get a female, they are easier to train. Get a lab or a springer . No I'm not giving you Maggie...

From a male stand point I think females are harder to train at this point in my life (thankyouverymuch)

Female Lab. Avoid buying one with a high tail. Female is smaller/takes up less room, less agressive generally toward other dogs, and doesn't spray. Make sure you buy a pup that has OFA parents.
Goldens bark more, generally.
Labs were developed as kennel dogs, Goldens were developed as nobleman's companion that hunt.

High tail is usually an indicator of harder to train. The reason why is field trialers selected for really agressive dogs and liked a high tail for "style" on the ground. Over the generations, you get extremely tough, hard to train dogs that will take a huge amount of pressure and have a high tail. The pressure is necessary to polish the performance to an extreme manner. BTW, a high tail has no benefit in the water as a keel, even though it is also an indicator of a really long rear leg muscle which gives speed.
The reason you don't want a field trial dog is they are a handful, and extremely energetic. You don't need massive amounts of energy to sit still in a boat.

I had a designer dog. 1/2 lab, 1/2 golden. He was a male, but he was the smartest dog I've ever known. His "people" vocabulary was amazing and it was fun to show people how much he understood. We got him at 6 weeks. He was totally potty trained by 8 weeks. At 10 weeks, he could sit, stay and lay down on command. He knew "shhhhh" with index finger to lips and would quit barking immediately. He continued to pick up "meanings" of words and phrases on his own his whole life. When I said excuse me, he would move out of my way. He was a perfect gentleman. Over the years, we had other dogs in the house that he personally trained in "watch" duties. He took it seriously, and the other dogs would be reprimanded if they didn't follow his commands.
He was smarter than my grandkids. He was also their best babysitter and would block the baby from getting near the stairs.
When we had to put him down at age 14, part of me died too.
Now I have a dumb lab mix, Millie. She sheds twice what Black Jack did. She also has the sweetest disposition of any big dog I've ever seen. She still wants to be a lap dog at 100 pounds. Black Jack was exasperated by her, and her lack of attention to her guarding duties. She never followed his lead, and you could tell he thought she was worthless. When he was gone, she missed him, but immediately took over his duties and did everything he taught her to do. He would be proud.
A lab/standard poodle mix is supposed to be one of the best combo's out there. They supposedly shed very little, and have a high degree of trainability. They are the most hypoallergenic. Since both breeds are water dogs, you can bet they will love getting in, and out of, the boat. They come in all colors, so getting a blonde is easy. This is the most popular designer dog at the present. You live in a cold climate, so you will want a dog with a warm coat.
Females can be easier to train. I like ones that have had one litter, because their maternal instincts develop their personalities into wonderful pets, instead of neurotic biatches. They are usually better around kids, and they are less likely to mark territory indooors.

Females are more agressive towards other dogs. Brains come from breeding not from the sex. Choose the litter, pick your sex, close your eyes and grab one...

Mike,
I will be breeding one of my Labs this spring. I don't buy the theory that males are hard headed either. I have two of them, no problems. In any litter one of the dogs (alpha) is going to be headstrong. Dogs that don't listen (hard headed) are mainly a result of people not training and spending time with them. Note the aggressive nature of these two males.

This is my chessie male.. He is real mean as you can see...
I hunt with a LOT of dogs. I think most will agree females mature faster. I think most will also agree that females are more protective, hense being more aggressive towards other dogs. I have one of each. I just don't think the sex of the dog has anything to do with the attitude of the dog...

The Boat Dog.
It's HER seat and he thought he could have a spot. She eventually pushes him off. For three days they fought. She's done this to others also. Fish4steel comes to mind!

Mike, we got an English Cocker for a boat dog. She is multi-functional too!!

Sofa Dog
And recliner Dog
All kidding aside, if you're not set on a large dog, this might be something to consider. She also swims, and is great for hunting grouse and rabbits. I think she would do good on quail too, but haven't tried that yet. She points, and will flush on command. This breed comes in many colors (do a Gooogle search), and the smarts and hunting instincts aren't bred out like so many American Cockers. (She don't piddle when ya pet her either!!)
Sara was the runt of the litter, (we didn't want a show dog) so she only weighs about 20#. Most of them are a little bigger, 25#to 30#.
We do have to get her groomed every 6 to 8 weeks, or her hair will get matted.
Rule #1, Always spoil your huntin' dog!!!

Thanks for the replies and pics. You folks make me want one right now! I'm pretty much set on a Lab. Yes they shed but short hair makes grooming easier. I've had a Golden and a Newfoundland so I know what it takes to groom a long haired dog trust me.
As far as the male female opinions I think it's just that. I've owned both and I agree with Denali that it's all in the training. If the dog is agressive it's because it's been taught to be (or lack of training). Both my male and female where great companions but they both had there own personality also. I also agree that females mature faster. Neutering a male makes a huge difference in temperment and being a male I can understand this and having a female spade only made her more protective and I'm not talking in a bad way.
Mitch, I had a bad experience with a cocker once (ie: she want to tear my face off) I am looking for a short haired bigger (not huge) dog. Sara is a cute dog for sure
Keith, There's going to be room for two dogs in my boat. She'll remind you to put on your PFD on trust me 
Marsha, Black Jack sounds like he was an awesome dog. When I put Nick I had the same feeling you did. I can never replace him but I can start a new chapter like you did with Millie. I also agree Millie rocks From the looks of it she also liked Marty's tent  The mental picture of that duck tape is still very vivid in my mind.

I have a Lab/Golden mix...best dog Ive ever had far and away. But he grew to 106 lbs and he makes things a little crowded in the barge now. One of his litter mates (a female) belongs to a friend of mine and she is just about the perfect size--my dog ended up with the King Kong genes from the beast that sired him--a big, goofy,lovable yella/golden named McIntosh.
Anyway, a lab/golden is prone to be a great, calm boat dog if you train it not to take unwelcome belly flops off the deck..they LOVE the water. And if ya get one make sure it doesnt have King Kong genes or you'll be cussin at the bitch everytime you trip over her in the boat!

The English Cockers are not so grouchy as their American Cousins. And I can't hardly believe one wouldn't want to just lick that ol' mug of yours anyway!!

Mitch, I don't blame the dog at all. She was getting harrassed by some kids and was trying to calm her down. Bad move on my part.
I asked Denali to put me down on the list for a pup from Tex. Man alive it'll be tough to wait until Aug/Sept but I have no doubt it'll be worth it.

Here is one I just took of Kobie the wonder dog doing what he likes best on the only piece of furniture he is allowed to do it. When he is on the boat he pretty much does the same thing and stretches himself out to a 5 1/2 foot long by 2 foot high lump to step over.

Funny thing is he only gets fed 1.5 cups of chow twice per day and gets a good walk at least 3 time per week, runs around out back playing with Buddy the horse and still looks like a blonde hog. Only thing I can figure is he gets into my daughters' room and snitches the cat food. He never gets a real althetic work out but dang, he can store the fat!
