Ok, I'm in the market for a .45 ACP, I have owned a USP and didn't care for it. Sort of leaning toward's a 1911, probably a basic one and modify it myself!
What have you all got and use and like-any suggestions would be great!

I had a ruger in 9mm that I unloaded a few years back because one, it was a 9mm, two it was too short for my hands.
I put together one of my grand fathers 1911's and love it.
I have shot my uncles ruger 45, I liked it alot.
Good luck.
happy shopping.

I own the .40 USP (got one when they first came out), it fits my hands well and is my grouse gun. Also just bought an XD .45 compact and I like it a lot, especially the trigger when you compare it to the Glock. When I was at Cabela's on Friday, they had a used Para Ordinance LDA 45, the officer's model and that felt good as well, plus it was a double action pistol in a 1911 format.
Never liked the 1911 format, too big in general for concealed carry, and not a lot of rounds. 14+1 in .45 ACP with my XD.
Do you have average or small sized hands? Ever try the Hogue "Handall"? Helps make a marginal grip a solid one, and every carry pistol I have gets one. Just a thought.

I might have to go and wonder the pawn shops and see what I can find! I know I can buy a new Ruger for around $450! Sort of want to find something that I won't be afraid to play with and modify, 1911 are very modifiable!! Thanks for the input guys!!! My hands are probably average, I don't think that It is the grip I think that it is more of a weight thing!

I have the P-90 Ruger .45. It has worked well, never jammed. I have put several thousand rounds through it. I also have a couple of 1911's both Colt and clones. I agree with Dogfish, the 1911 and the Ruger P series platform is too bulky for me for concealed carry. I do however prefer to shoot the Ruger over the XD, HK, and the Sig.

I have a Ruger P 94 DC (.40 cal) and love it. It has an ambidextruous de-cocking mechanism, so even Fishhog could shoot it, being wrong-handed and all. Check them out, you won't be sorry.

The only .45 ACP I own is a second generation Glock 21, works good for me, as I have big hands.
The best 1911 I've shot was a friends Les Baer 6" Tactical Plus, awsome weapon...but pretty spendy !

If you can wait for it I think Springfield is coming out with a .45acp in their XDm line, 9mm has a 19+1 & the .40S&W is 16+1 so thier .45 should have a large capacity. I love my .45 XD...that being said get what feels good in your hand...put alot of guns in your hand & shot as many as you can.

Same post different thread...
I think your first .45 should be an accuraized full size steel frame with a nice trigger and good signts, so you can really enjoy the single action.
But seriously, I wouldn't carry a full size frame unless I was carrying a full size gun. If you want to make it lighter go with a Commander length steel slide and officer sized aluminum frame.

Anyone got a RUGER?
I had a M1911 .45 colt about 7 years ago but had it stolen from my car (it was a sweet gun). I later purchased a .45 P97 and a 9mm P89 and loved everything about them until I sold them. After spotting 2 bears and 2 cougars in a 2 month period late last year while fishing/hunting, I decided to get another gun since my son was going out in the woods with me often. I was looking at getting a revolver, either a 357mag or 44mag, but I decided to get a P345 for rapid fire and ammo capacity. I ended up settling on another P97 thought since I found a good deal on one in good condition. It was my favorite of the three I owned previously.
The colt 1911 was a good gun, but I really wanted something smaller in size but with power for protection (bears, cougars, home invading tweakers). I like the P97 because it has enough power to take down the black bears here in WA if needed, yet small enough that a woman could comfortably use it. Perfect companion when you are sharing a fishing hole with bears. Plus it is a very tough and affordable piece.
I was just reading about a mini 1911 style 9mm the other day. Much smaller than the full sized version. I wouldn't mind having a minisized 1911 .45cal.

Wrong-handed? Tell me something. How do you control your mouse with your hand on your wiener?

I'm very good at "Multi Tasking". That and I use my weiner to move the mouse with a beer in one hand and my GF's boob in he other PS: I can type 20 wpm with that thing
I can shoot just fine right handed, just happen to be left hand dominate. I do most intricate things left, play all sports right, shoot left, and reel with my right.
Im all screwed up.

Hmm.... I am also left handed, but I use right handed scissors, kick balls with my right foot, and reel right-handed (except for spinning reels. I use those left-handed).
I used to type and control the mouse with my wiener too, but I gummed up the keyboard and track-ball one too many times...

Somewhere online there's an article by a guy who used to do guided bear hunts here in WA with dogs. Through word of mouth he ended up with a bunch of cops as clients and several of them wanted to use their duty weapons. After seeing several bears shot with typical duty calibers he concluded the .45 was worthless on bears. It's been a while since I've read it but I think he said the 10mm was the minimum he would consider in a semiauto.

If a well placed 450 grain arrow at 200fps can drop a bear in a few dozen yards, a .45cal hollow-point is sure to do the trick. I know bears are tough, but vital organs are vital organs and bears are no super-creature. 8 rounds in 2 seconds, each expanding and destroying all tissue for several inches around the bullet will drop any animal. I've seen 1,000lb elk drop in 15yds from a well-placed arrow shot from a 1970's model bow that probably shot around 200fps.
Look at Fred Bear. Back in the 70's he was shooting a very primitive bow with no sights and no arrow rest and probably had a 45lb draw and less than 200fps. He had already taken almost every huntable big game species in the world and he was a very old man at that point. Think of what bow he was shooting when he was younger.
The point is, I can have decent rapid-fire power in a fairly compact and reliable package. If you had to choose between a .22cal, or no gun at all in bear country, what would you choose? I'd choose the .22cal and if it came down to me having 3 seconds until I got mauled, I would start firing rounds until the clip was empty, and would be glad I had something on me. Would I start firing that .22 if I had a feeling the bear may just walk away? No way, I would risk pissing it off. But you get where I am coming from.
A friend of mine, and property owner of some land I hunt in the Port Angeles area has had so many problems with deer that she got a cheapo little 275fps pistol air pellet gun to scare them away. She shot at one once and it ran a bit then stopped. She saw a small trickle of blood coming out it's ribs. She didn't think much of it until her husband found a dead deer in their field later that day. That pellet dodged the ribs and tagged the heart or lungs enough to kill the animal. 1 in 1,000,000 shot, but you would never believe it was possible.
A .45 has the power. One shot may have to be good/lucky to drop it, but single-action and a light trigger will be sufficient with several rounds.
I do agree a larger gun like a .44mag or bigger revolver would be a better bear gun, but I am partial to the semi-auto .45ACP for other reasons like target shooting and protection outside of the wilderness.

FWIW, the problem with a .45 is lack of penetration on a bear and a hollow point will make that problem worse not better. The bow to gun comparison isn't valid because generally speaking an arrow cuts through the animal instead of pushing it's way through. More rounds that are equally stopped short of vitals would only stand to make the bear more mad.
If you hunt, you've probably seen an animal run for a few seconds after being shot. In those few seconds, a large bear could do a lot of damage even if you hit the vitals. So, unless you break the shoulders which you won't with a .45, you can expect the bear to be up close and personal if it wants to be.
I agree some gun is better than none and furthermore, I think you are more likely to come across a cougar, wolf, dog, or person than a bear, in any case.

Bow vs .45 is apples and oranges. I'm just repeating what was written by a guide who was present when multiple treed bears were shot with a .45. With a treed bear they could be picky about their shot angle. That's not the case with a defense situation. If you have experience shooting bears with a pistol please share. I don't worry about bears anyway.
