Looking at quite a few different choices for my first carry piece. I'm still open to options, but am looking looking at 1911 style 45's to start. So, I'm coming to all y'all for opinions and maybe a heads up on deals for decent budget hardware. My criteria: - cheap but not garbage (sub-$500) - NOT FRENCH - I'd shoot French, but not with French <ok, I'm just kidding - sort of> - 5" barrel preferred, but could be convinced to go 4". I've shot 3 1/2" but could not consistently group. - single stack - I don't have large hands, and I'd like something that I could also convince my wife she could shoot. (what a great excuse!) - steel or alloy frame - I like polymers, but can't afford em yet. I love the CD, and of course the Glocks, but they're out of my price range. - extended slide release - I have a short thumb reach, and can barely reach some of the full size 1911 styles I've handled. - not too many sharp edges or corners so that it's smoother for CC. Yeah, I know, I really want a Kimber, but I can't afford one yet.
Like I said, I'm open to other options, but have been waiting a LOOOOONNNNNNNNGGGGGGG time to finally put down the danged magazines and articles and actually use more than just rentals or friends' hardware.
That, and I REALLY miss my old .45 I had back in Canuckia, and had to sell in 1984.
Finally, I get to be just like a real American.

I hate to say it but for the kinda money you wanna spend the glock would be your best bet. If you want a quality 1911 it's gonna cost ya more then 500 you might be looking to spend 600 0r 700.

...or more. I really think you would be better saving a bit longer and getting a better weapon. I have shot many .45ACP and the Kimbers were the tops. Then next one I buy will be a Kimber.

I'd go used Glock and not look back if you like them. But, I'd shoot a few guns to decide if want to do that or not. The longer frame of a long Glock feels/shoots quite a bit different than a shorter Fframed model.
It's not like you can't buy a different one later, but in the mean time, you'd have a solid carry gun. Just don't shoot lead in a Hex barreled Glock!
You'll have no problem unloading a used Glock after shooting it and carrying it for even a few years.

Para Ordinance makes a good 1911 .45 and is in the $500ish range. But if you want a quality piece, save your pennies and buy a Kimber. My next purchase will be one.
My Springfield XD shoots just fine and I shoot it well. Well most days
Fine one that fits your hand and learn to shoot it.
Next time your up this way Geoff and want to shoot my XD, let me know!!!

Mark - I'll be at Bob's in Burlington tomorrow around lunch (my sister's 50th birthday, and my 'still less than 50' ). I'm looking for a good excuse to hit Kesselring's for a little birthday shopping. (No papers yet, so it's just shopping) I really hate buying retail anyway.
Now that the local rivers are closed, I'm hoping to hit the V in March. Hopefully we can meet up.

Happy Birthday Geoff!!!
Not sure if Kesselrings is open Sundays or not. You may want to call first. Sprotsmans Warehouse has a nice selection of handguns.

I handled a Ruger 1911 .45 and it when I racket it as if to put in a round then put the safety on...the hammer fell. If there would have been a live round in it it would have gone off! The guy said "ya, that's the way they work". Can't go wrong with a Glock. Never heard of that myself. Certainly not my choice of a pistol to own. Check 'um out good. BTW, I finally commited...I bought a .40 Sig Sauer p250, I don't have my CCP so having to wait for it.

Tally, the hammer drops, but it cannot engage the primer at that stage. My Ruger P85 does the same thing. Scared the hell out of me the first time.
Glocks are good guns.

I looked at a few today - still looking. Beretta Px4 Storm- felt good. That decocker really makes the hammer come down hard and it certainly gets your attention - bit funky looking, but nice function/features.
Taurus PT 24/7 - nice fit me better than the Glock. Cheap for a .40, but I'd prefer .45 and .40 ammo prices would make up the price gap in a hurry.
Full retail prices for XD's are still reasonable. Hmmmmm - I just happen to prefer non-retail.
I also looked at .22 rifles for my oldest. It's almost time.

Don't remember what I paid for my XD, but I think it was in the $425 - $450 range.
You can buy guns online and save paying sales tax to the Peoples Republic of Washington, but you will have to have it shipped and pay FFL transfer fees. so it's usually about a wash.

Interesting. That was not edited by the Moderators...hmm...I wonder what would happen if instead of French, 'Black' or 'Native' was used..... I'm part French, and am not offended by it one bit, but am a bit confused as to what nationalities or ethnic groups we are allowed to bash on here on Steelheader.net.
