going to pick up the truck in missouri and will be making a cabelas pitstop. They sell the powerstroke superchips.. do you have one? do they help on gas mileage? figure it would be a good time to buy one with some large distance to cover after cabelas  .
They make some pretty big horsepower claims and I believe them to be true. Just wondering mainly about the economy mode right now... I am sure to use the other options I should upgrade parts on the truck to match. Long drive just trying to save fuel on drive.

What are you towing/hauling that you need a chip for? I wouldn't add any more power until you get your new rig checked out to verify that adding more HP and torque isn't going to wreak havoc on your new truck. The Ford tranny is a weak one anyways,did the previous owner tow heavy? Was all the tranny maintanance done? Alot of guys that chip their trucks also beef-up the stock tranny at the same time.

Hey marty, check out demon diesel products, they are the best. My buddie has a 5 setting chip on his f250 and he gets almost 17mpg but also gets 500hp. he has also upgraded the exaust and air intake. the chips are good, I would recomend one. also with all the mods when your power stoke idles it sounds like a fighter jet waiting to take off.

I don't tow that often yet, but was thinking the chip could help fuel effiency for driving across country without a load. Truck has been used to haul heavy (has goose neck), not sure if anything has been upgraded. I will be hauling a 20 ft aluminum sled shortly

My stock(other than K&N air filter)'01 F350 Crewcab PSD has pleanty of power hauling my 9'6" Elkhorn Camper and towing my 21' Alumaweld Super Vee.
I Tow White pass way more than most and the only thang that slows me down are the other car and trucks and the deer and elk standing in the road......oh yah and the ice and snow in the winter

bought a 99 f350 powerstroke clubcab auto tranny used off ebay in missouri. Yep tailgate is going to be down for the trip
I was looking at superchip and it is plug and play.
My trip plan goes right through boise to visit the giant chunk of metal

Marty, you aren't even going to know that sled is behind you when you finally get to bring it home. You'll have to keep looking in your mirror to make sure you still got it. 
Mileage varies quite a bit with the PS. I would run through a tank first. RJ had quite a few probs when he put a chip in his old one. Like, it wouldn't start! I think Moochin is right on... don't do it yet.
And uh, I just asked Caveman, he says why, he don't need it?

Yep thats probably the best thing to do. At least its a power stroke and not a V10. Had one for a rental and got about 8mpg it sucked it down.

Marty, that will be such a great drive. I've driven Chattanooga Tn, to Yakima in a lot of different vehicles, but never in a nice big truck.
Looking at the current diesel prices in the midwest on over looks like an uphill climb.

On the chip, I'd make the call at Cabelas. Get to know your truck a bit, sounds, noises etc...

Run first tank with cruise set at 2,200 RPM, you'll be smiling. Try a second tank running at 2,700 RPM and I think it will bring tears to your eyes! You will be happy to obey the posted truck speed limit when you are pulling a trailer. My 5spd is at 2,200 RPM at 60MPH. Your auto should be around 70MPH at 2,200 hopefully. I hope the sled will be following you home from Boise. Have a safe trip. Bill

Marty, congrats on an excellent choice. I've had 5 PSD's since '96, and they've all been excellent. All I've done to them is replace the air filter with a K&N. As for towing, they're excellent. My current '02 F350 pulls my 20' Intruder and my 10'3" Lance camper over Stevens Pass at 65mph and I get a respectable 11.5 to 12 mpg. I just made a trip over here in the "flat land" country (not hauling a load) and I kept the speed at 65mph on cruise and I got a verified 21.1 mpg!!!!! That's way more than I usually get, but I'm generally pulling a load, or Stevens Pass, and speeding some. Keep the "r's" around 2200-2400 and you should get great mileage. All I've ever had is the a/t also and we've never had a problem with them, just shift out of o/d when pulling a load up a large hill. Remember to add the FW-16 coolant additative to the radiator (if the liquid is green, the brown liquid doesn't need it) every 30-40K miles, change your oil at 5-7K miles and you have a trouble free truck for a couple hundred thousand miles:)!

springfield is the truck pickup zone. Thanks for the tips on the rig and traveling mileage. I would be very happy with 21.. how hard is it to swap out that air filter? Is it a preroad trip swap or should I wait till I get home? I won't have tools so would need to stop and get the simple ones to do a job.
What preroad trip things should I look at before setting out from missouri to washington? Cabelas is 11 hrs from the start point and we may be there for the opening, but dog tired. Travel plans are flexible just dont want to spend the flexibity stuck in nebraska.

Further research suggests leaving the air filter alone on the drive. If I find a steal at the bargain cave I may buy it otherwise will pass until ebay offers a deal on one .
Guess the first thing I should do is change fluids if needed. Gonna have to ask my dealer to see what has been changed if anything.
Ok I am clueless... first diesel. I was told truck has new front ball joints.. beyond that I don't have any idea. I may need new rubber... need to look when I get there.
Should I visit a ford dealer before leaving missouri? I belong to AAA so should be able to get towed if needed.
If you were going to drive what precautions would you do first? spare parts to carry? I don't have a clue on this.

Since you bought through a dealer, ask if an extended warranty is available. If it is, BUY IT! Because of the mileage, it might not be eligible.
If you have the time, get it to a Ford dealer. Tranny service, oil change and coolant.
Get some basic tools. Caveman recommends a complete tool kit from the nearest Sears with 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch drive with assortment of wrenches, screw drivers and pliers. A crescent wrench too. You will need a large piece of cardboard and hey, get a manual and take it with!
Check your spare. Then check all tires for cuts, air pressure etc. Check that the lug nuts are tight.
Check ALL your fluids, including the differentials. If the batteries aren't maintenance free, check them. Check your belts and hoses. Check your lights and turn signals. Test the wiper blades. Familiarize yourself with your dash controls. (I have forgotten my commercial pre-trip steps! ARGH!) Adjust your mirrors.
One of the big reasons those trucks get traded is because the tranny is going. Take her (him?) for a test drive. Make sure it shifts smooth! If it kicks like a mule when you accelerate hard, then be easy on it on the drive. If by chance, you took it to a dealer, you will already know this.

Marty, Probably the best thing you could do to your truck is make it breath easier. As stated above go K&N and a new muffler. A buddy of mine put a areoturbine muffler on his. He gets 2 mpg more then the stock muffler. PROVEN! $200 for the muffler and $50 for install. A few tanks of fuel and it's paid for itself. Makes it sound wicked.....

Some people like K&N's and some don't.I'd skip the K&N myself. They were designed for Baja racing,when it doesn't matter how much dust gets in your engine,it'll be torn down after the race anyways. They don't filter as well as a good OEM filter will and they are a pain to clean.
Ford put them in the Mustang Cobras for a year or two,then stopped,I wonder why? I'll bet it was from all the Mass air Sensors that went bad from over-oiling the filter.
Make sure to buy a CPS (cam positon sensor) when you're down there. Its another part prone to failure when you least expect it.

Good call on a spare CPS(cam position sensor) as they can leave you stranded on the side of the road.
Go to a International truck dealer parts dept. and ask for a part# 1825899C93. @ International it'll cost you $80.00-$85.00 and @ Ford parts dept. it'll cost you $140.00-$170.00 for the same part in a FoMoCo box. 
All you need to change the sensor is a 3/8" rachet, 1 1/2" ext. and a 10mm socket.
Go to TheDieselStop.com and go to PSD and do a search under CPS and you can print a picture of where it is and how to change it.
Mine started to go @ 76,000 miles and with the help from the forum listed above, I was able to fix mine myself in 6-7 minutes @ the cost of $84.00. Good Idea to carry a spare.

Sounds like I need to pack the wrenches/crescent and a cps (easier to pickup before I go and just pack along). Dealer is checking the fluids to get it road ready.
Then a hacksaw to cut the muffler off before driving home ... this is if nothing has been modified by previous owner.

Not sure if they fixed the downpipes on the 99's but I would check before you chip it. One's like mine (95) the downpipe flattens out as it goes between the engine and the firewall and it needs to be changed out and a bigger exhaust needs to be installed prior to chipping them. The CPS is a must, also ask about the glow plugs and the glow plug relay, not a problem this time of year but in the winter it will give you fits starting if it is shot. Ask about the additive level in the coolant, if it has been maintained and what the current level of additive is now, these motors will eat themselves from the inside out if it is not maintained. What happens is the cylinder walls flex when it fires and if there is not enough additive air pockets will develop and create pinholes from the cooling side which will eventually cause a coolant to cylinder leak. As has also been said the automatic trannys are the weak link in these. Ask how old the batteries are as they will also cause starting problems if they are weak, takes a hugh amp draw to turn these things over.

What Jeffhead said. Beware the coolant additive. I have a close friend who ran into problems in this area only 9 days after purchase of his PW/Stroke. His first clue should have been when he asked the prior owner about the additive maintenance and the guy replied, "coolant additive?". In the end, because of the high miles, he pushed for replacing the engine and managed to get the guy to split the cost with him. But, this still put him WAY over budget. I'm not trying to scare you because I'm a huge fan of PW/Strokes, just sharing what I've seen happen to others.

Things to carry for the drive back - FLARES! Voice of experience....flat tire on packed ice curve on I-90, at night, in snowstorm. Stepping out the door could've been suicide without a flare in your hand.
3/4 of my last tank was home to work. Last 1/4 was to Bremerton. Fueled up. Average was 17 mpg. Just keep your foot out of it.
As far as power? Our 22' Renken weighs between 5-6,000 lbs. I can GAIN speed going up Fairholm hill. Piffle. I don't think you need a chip.

After reading all the info on these the chip really isn't needed for power for pulling my rigs, but if I can get better mileage cheaply. The 350 tranny has a different gearing than the 250 ..350 having issues too? Thanks for the heads up on additives was reading the service manual and didn't really understand the issue.
I looked to see how to change a cps but couldn't find the info online. Guess I need one of them maintainence manuals when I figure out if its a 99 or a 99.5 rig. I see they listed the down exhaust in this year. I really need to know more about the rig itself and its hard to do from WA.

CPS's are easy, 1 wire and 1 10MM bolt holds it in. It is located just adjacent to the 8 o'clock position of the lower pulley wheel. Stock these things have plenty of power, mine with the camper and pulling the boat does just fine. I get about 19 MPG or so without the camper on and 14 with. One other thing that I would highly reccommend is to run Stanadyne fuel treatment, it adds back the lubrication to the injectors that has been lost over the years with the removal of the sulfer from the diesel. Injectors go for about $300 a pop!!!

Appreciate the insights and help on this maintainence on the new rig.
Any tips/spots to find test strips to for the cooling fluid?
Finally found the cps change info with picture thanks.
A popular modification on the powerstrokes is a fuel tank intake mod to reduce air bubbles and increase mpg. This one will have to wait since its a truck bed removal.
This diesel is new world of maintainence, glad this place is here to ask questions.

The tranny in the 250 and the 350 is the same. Both are junk IMO. I know there are guys that have good luck with them but ALOT of people don't. The PS makes alot of power and I don't think Ford made the tranny beefy enough to handle all the power. Dodge had the same problems with the 47RE tranny in the older Rams. Too much power for a weak tranny. When Dodge upped the power in the Cummins,they were smart and came out with a tranny better suited to all the power. Ford has done the same with the new Torqueshift.

So the solution to the tranny is aftermarket products? I just want the reliablity I have experienced from toyota in my new ford. Might be a pipe dream, but hope the aftermarket solves most of these issues.
what is the difference in the numbers they use to say which tranny they have in rear end? I havent seen that comparison chart yet.

Marty, he was trying to tell you that there is no difference in the numbers. The F250 and F350 tranny's are the same in both sizes of truck. (I think)
Whatever tranny's they put in those small busses (E450?) are just as wimpy. The shop had them rebuilt, wrapped and stacked like cereal boxes on a shelf. Went through a couple per month it seemed like.

Ok I got a edge tuner/diagnostic coming (others report 3mpg more than stock)
Got a new filter the front end of breathing
After further research I have some of the gas mod stuff coming that is suppose to increase mpg (intank, prepump, regulator)
A hotter thermostat another mileage add on
The tranny portion that goes out apparently is the torque converter which then takes out the rest. I will have to wait on this one and the stainless exhaust.

The edge evolution tuner I got had been previously installed. This causes the tuner to lock up so it can't be used on multiple vehicles. I called edge customer service and they are reflashing the module with the latest software and resetting it for NO FEE. I highly recommend this company based on customer support!!! If the claims are true from what actual install I will be estatic with my new performance.
The evolution module also has a performance feature that measueres 0-60 and a 1/4 so you can track your trucks enhancements. I plan on using the tow mode 60 hp, there are also two more extreme hp settings.

BTW, I got just under 16 mpg after the synthetic change over. Of course, I'm driving like Aunt Myrtle, trying to squeeze as much as possible out of it.

Not really looking at the break even point on these mods, If they not to expensive and I can do them they are just added features to an already great ride. If I was really looking to save money I would have bought a old pickup for 700 bucks or commute in a volkswagon. (done that and this is more fun)
And I also figure if I get the things I want sooner rather than later I get to enjoy them longer
