uh oh, Ford vs Chevy
      #219578 - 11/29/05 06:54 PM

I've been a Toyota guy since before I could drive, but now I need a full size pickup. Tundra would be my first choice if they weren't so spendy. I won't drive a Dodge. So if you have (or had) an F150 or C/K 1500, what do you like or dislike? How reliable has it been and what motor do you have?

I am driving my 4th Ford. I had a 1983 Ranger, a 1987 F-150 with the 300 ci six, a 1999 Superduty F-250 with the 5.4L Triton, and a 2005 F-250 Superduty with the 6.0L Powerstroke. If you are getting a 1/2 ton, the 5.4L is a good motor. It underpowered my 3/4 ton Extra-Cab 4X4.

I'd test drive the F-150 with the 5.4L Triton V-8. See if you can load it comparably to your typical load and drive some hills. Do the same with the Chevy. Then buy the Ford...

Are we talking comfort or utility? Chevy's have more comfortable seats and ride better. If you are thinking new, consider a Chevy Hybrid. The red tag event that Chevy is putting on is really awesome for the deal.

Ford all the way, had a 74 p/u, 79 bronco full size, 85 bronco full size and now have a 97 F150 SC lariat....love this truck...wish it were an F250 though. All gasoline, have a GMC 2500 6.2l diesel that gets good mileage and that motor has some zip. External sheet metal sucks on those 80 chev/gmc trucks. Good luck in your search!

I went from toyota to ford f350 diesel 7.3 .. Thing is huge but man its a great drive. Wish I still had a toyota for commuting at todays fuel prices. My thinking was if ya gonna do a big truck do it right the first time.

Might be interested in selling it also. 43,000 miles on it. Books out at a little over $20,000. I'm looking at getting a smaller pickup...Toyota or Nissan.

I had a 89 F-150 with the 351 V8 under the hood; had 193,000 miles on it (much of it towing) and it didn't burn a drop of oil. I moved up to a F250 crew cab 4x4 with the V10. Nice truck, but ya pay the price for that super duty suspension on rough roads.
Ford all the way, although I will admit that the Chevy does ride a bit nicer.

FORD!

Currently own an '05 F-150 FX4 with the 5.4L Triton and love it. It's my third Ford and I can't see buying any other brand in my future. Go to the Trucks section of the forum and look for the "Line X in my truck" thread for a picture of the Line X liner...highly recommend having that put in. Make the dealership include it in your purchase.

Prior Fords I've owned have been great also. 94 Ranger XLT 2WD extended cab, 4 cyl, 5 speed. Drove cross country twice in it, no problems ever. Finally had to trade it in on the new F-150 though, it had 125K miles and was close to needing some top end work, so I traded it in for $2K off my new one. SUCKERS!!
Also had a 77 F-150 2WD, 4 speed, straight six cyl that I drove the piss out of. I never had a bit of trouble with it either and could load a cord of green madrone in that sucker and still do 60 mph. Of course the "pucker factor" was a bit high, but it got the job done.

Guess you get the hint...I say Ford and it seems like the majority of the other guys do too.

Ever wonder why it's the most popular selling truck in the US? Because it's worth the $$$.

Enjoy your new truck whatever brand it is.

Cupo, What are you going to use it for? If you need the larger cab or to tow the 1/2 ton is fine. If you are planning to haul a camper or something else heavy, get a heavy duty 3/4 or 1 ton. The lighter axles WILL have wheel bearing problems if you haul heavy loads a lot. Engine? If you buy an older pickup a 350 is damn hard to beat.

If you need to clear a blocked boat launch by pulling a van and two boats out of the way, all at the same time, you WILL need an F350 with powerstroke and a heavy duty logging chain.

For everything else, any full size Ford with appropriate power plant is a good choice. I would steer clear of a truck manufacturer with financial woes if I were buying.

This will be a daily driver. No heavy loads, just fishing gear, hunting gear, wet dogs, pontoon boats, etc. I can't cram myself into the tiny toyota seats in the tiny toyota cab any longer. Been a great truck but it's too small for me. I'm looking used and under $15k. Will probably go 2wd this time to save on purchase price and a little on mpg.

Dodge is running one heck of an incentive plan to buy their product! Gas for 2 years! 5 year or 50,000 warranty! Free scheduled maintenance for 2 years! I looked at Dodge before buying my F150 and didn't really like them in comparison but those bennies are hard to resist. I wonder if Ford will follow suit?

Was looking hard at a new Dodge and bought a used Toyota (not much price difference ) But then I saw how (don't remember the exact model, know it's the the hot rodder) the Dodge had the worst mileage out of the bunch. If you're looking for a manual (don't know) forget the Dodge cuz you're looking V8 no matter what. That's what changed my mind. Really wanted a Dodge, manual only v6 for mpg, but can only find that in the used realm.

I have the Chevy 1 ton Duramax. Rides great. has the lowest load rating of the 3. To do it over I would go for the Ford.

Looked at a T100? Not quite full size, I know. You could definitely get into one of those for under your price limit, keep 4wd in a pickup that gets good mpg, and the cab space is greater over the Tacomas or <95 minis. Plus with a little welding rod it'll readily accept Chevy, Ford and even Jeep parts.

If you going to go 1/2 ton 2000 or newer,go ford. I am a mechanic for a large co. we have quit a few fords and chevy's and we have put transfer cases in almost all our chevy's. we have had few problems with the fords. my brother bought a 2003 chevy and had to put a transmission, transfercase, and rear end twice. chevy said these were all common problems. I drove chevy's for years, and now you could not give me one, at least until they make some changes. Of course I would not own a new ford 6.0 litre diesel either, then I would look at chevy or dodge. I build a lot of diesels and so far the 6.0 litres are not holding up to the power we are running. keep breaking cranks.
