Did you check the gap on the plugs before you installed them? Also, is there a chance some of the wires got switched around???? Sounds like the timing could be off.
Good luck!

Ok here's one thing to try.....
CHECK ALL YOUR FUSES.
I coughed a fuse in my 1989 chev while towing my sled. Crusing along the freeway and then nothing. like I had turned off the key.
Had it towed and was asked at the garage if I was towing anything... HUH???
Turns out the brake lights AND the computer are on the same circuit.
$300.00 later for the price of a $0.30 fuse
Could be fuel pump, those years had a plastic baffle in the fuel tank that would come loose and take out the pump. Cost me $900.00 to fix that one
Or it could be the ignition module in the distributor, that cost me $400.00 as I recall :doublesteamed:
As you can tell, I'm somewhat versed. If you have qurestions, feel free to give me a call. For nothing less, a shoulder to cry on. I'm no mechanic, but I feel your pain.

check what skyguy said first, if you were in there tinkerin around you may have bumped something loose. -plug wires -distibutor cap/ rotor -batterys terminals check the fuel filter too, if the truck was sittin for awhile it may have little gummed up fuel in it.
dont listen to any of this drive a ford/dodge/toyota mess either. old chevys will run for a good long time.

check for spark first. If its fuel pump dont drop the tank pull the bed its faster. Does that motor still have a HEI? If no spark module might be the prob. The first will take about 30 40 min to change then 15 min after that. You need a screwdriver and a 5/16 nut driver and dialectic grease. Go to a repair book for the steps. Oh don't forget to to take the neg battery term off before taking any thing off or you might spike the puter. WFFF

Check the computer fuse, check for spark WITH A REAL SPARK TESTER. Letting the spark just go to ground by holding the plug on a ground doesn't ground it enough. That can fry things with EFI. Check to make shure your plug wires are right. Go spend $15.95 for a Haynes or Chilton manual for it. The best money you'll put in it. Sounds like spark, It would have spit and sputtered on the carb cleaner. Be carefull with that stuff Doug, real flamable...

I need to add, that is as simple as fuel injection gets. Parts are reasonable too.

Doug it sounds like you did something you should'nt have in the tune up Been there done that . If my fogged brain can remember I'd first check and make sure you have the wires going to the right plugs. Been there done that Changing 8 wires with with two different ends can be confusing at your age. Been there done that I realize this is stress that you don't need but you need to man up and be prapared. Also they call it HEI for a reason (High Energy Ignition) Make sure the key is off and nobody is in the the driver seat that can turn the key. Yes I've been there and done that also

Yep a HEI has a bite to it. The first thing is to check for spark. If no spark is the power wire still hooked up (don't ask)pull the cap and look at the rotor is it all the way down and not burnt. Now the module is next. not sure how to test one but if it cranks and doesn't fire I'd look there. WFFF

Just because the rotor and cap wires are new doesn't mean you haven't crossed 'em up and put cylinder 1 into cylinder 5's location. Double check all the plug wires and cap. In case you don't label the wires, (yet), duct tape wrapped around them and a Sharpie prevents crossed wires in the future. Hope that you get it figured out soon.
Have you tried dumping 2 - 4 ounces of gas into the throttle?

I've had new distributor caps crack just a couple months after installing. Sometimes they barely run, most the time they won't.

Even with several wires crossed it should still start....don't ask me how I know this...besides, I replaced a 4cyl motor and had the firing order correct but the rotation was the opposite so only 1 or 2 were firing correctly...still started...ran like crap and the cat converter was glowing red due to all the unburned fuel being dumped down teh exhaust....took me a couple hours to find my mess up... If you got fuel to the injectors/cylinders, won't start with starting fluid...i'd think electrical.

TIMING! If the coolant didn't freeze and crack something your OK! Did you move the distributor at all? A single miss placed wire will cause it to run really rough and two in the wrong place can cause overheating. Been there....done that

If it started when it warmed up, first replace the fuse. It might have a hairline break the pulls apart when cold. This happend to a friend and it was $300 in test and the fix was a $.49 fuse. WFFF

It's a chevy, make shure you didn't cross plug #5 and #7, the two on the back of the left (driver's side) of the engine. When it was running, was the check engine light on?

WFFF is correct IMO and the ignition module is also solid state and can do some strange things when tempratures are involved.

I still say it is a fuel delivery problem or an ignition module.
I remember a similar situation with my 89, she would run fine. But, intermittantly (like once every month or so) the damn thing would not start after I ran it awhile and parked it. Sometimes it would start if I let it sit for a bit. Twice I towed the thing to a garage via towstrap, only to have it start right up when the mechanic was trying to diagnose the problem
Never did figure that one out, I just kicked it to the curb. She left me hanging too many times.
Hey, mechanics kids have to go to college too
