I believe it's time to upgrade the ride and I'm thinking about a 06 Tacoma. This will be the 8th Toyota I've owned in my lifetime and I'm here to tell you they have made some changes since my first 1979 Corolla. Since they changed body styles in 05 they have made some changes like the composite inner bed. This is a very cool feature and with the TRD package you get a 115v plug in the rear of the bed which is a pretty damn cool feature. No need for a battery powered alarm clock when the Mr. Coffee wakes you up For a mid sized truck it's ranked in the top of the class and with 4.0L V6 it can haul 6500lbs. My gawd that's almost enough for the beer at a droolers tilla Not to mention titty's and beer would probably sound pretty damn good coming out 7 speaker JBL system with a amplified subwoofer
Any opinions?

Chinook, Funny but both tose pictures are from Drooler Tillas. Sekiu and the Steelietilla on the Snake/Clearwater. You are truly a drooler!
Southfork, you know if they made a Toyota with a BIG diesel, I'd drive one. I have 2 little ones parked next to the F-250.

You both (Joe, Mike) have been in my Tundra. I'm in love with this one. The TRD package is great. Mike the Tacoma is a sweet ride as well. Good luck on your hunt and you never know you might find a Tundra for the same money. Be sure you get the DVD though as you daughter likes to watch Barney!

Would love to be driving one of them.. would even settle for a 4 banger. My brother has 4cylinder and it has ample power to accelerate up hill with a full load of firewood. Big 6 is nice but you might save a buck or two on a 4cyl unless you have to have huge power.
At the price of diesel these days I am half tempted to downsize myself.

Not to hijack this thread, but a guy I play poker with is the regional manager for Stinker Stations (Sinclair). At our last game he told us that if we had a diesel to get ready for pain. He figures that diesel will be $4+ a gallon by midsummer due to the lower sulfur requirements that go into affect in June. Something about increased refining costs.

Well I just put some miles on a Nissan Frontier King cab. Let me tell you it’s a whole different truck compared to the 03 model that knew it’s own way from Boise to Lewiston The new model is built on the same chassis as the Titan. As a matter fact it is a Titan just smaller. It has more interior room and everything is more convenient. I drove an automatic with a 265hp V6 and this sum bitch got after it! The 03 model had a 185hp V6. Dean would be in heaven climbing Whitebird in this thing. It’s rated to haul 6100lbs where the Tacoma is rated for 6500lbs and they both sport 4.0L 265 hp motors. The Tacoma has a 5 speed auto where the Frontier is a 3 speed with OD. The Frontier doesn’t rate as good of gas mileage as the Tacoma also. Nissan rate at 15/20 and the Tacoma was 16/21. This Nissan didn’t have the NISMO package which is there version of the Toyota’s TRD, but had limited slip and a towing package. It also had 4 wheel disk brakes and a 6disk CD with four speakers. The front facing rear seats in the King cab only take up space IMO. There is no way in hell a human could sit back there. Not even a small child or even child’s car seat even though they have a restraining system for one. Hell I wouldn’t even put a dog back there. It’s a gear storage only area IMO. Now Nissan’s seats have some trick features that are standard. They sense the weight of whoever’s sitting in the seat. For the passenger side if the occupant weights is less then 60lbs the passenger side air bag turns off automatically. In case of impact the shoulder harness pulls the occupant back into the seat and releases a small amount tension lowering the strain of the safety belts depending on the weight of the occupant. Safety is always a good thing in my book. The passenger seat also reclines to damn near a flat position which would be a great thing when Born2fish is driving home and I’m sleeping off a wicked birthday hangover from a Westside tilla It also folds down forward creating a very usable flat work surface.
23K for this truck.
Bottom line is IMO the Frontier looks like it means business and looks more like a truck then the Tacoma IMO. I’m driving the Taco tomorrow so expect another report.
Head to head baby it doesn’t get any better...

Hey Southfork, let's have a pull off.
Stick with the Toyota. They are a little lower maintenance, and I've owned 4 (2 in the driveway right now) Toyota vehicles. Solid, and reliable.

Joe have you been googling again Lower maintenance how so? And FJ I broke the trend with the 03 Frontier and I will admit that truck didn't even come close to Toyota's standards and those looked really GAY compared to the new ones.

Mike, sounds like the Frontier is the ride for us....particularly if I'm gonna be the one hauling your drunk-butt home from a tilla.
I've had a couple Datson/Nissons and Toyotas in my time and have been happy with all of them.
$4 for diesel???? Any one want to buy my Chevy? I'll through in the front bumper hitch for free.

As far as doors go they swing four different ways : right hand, left hand, right hand reverse & left hand reverse. Your drivers side door would be the LHR.
As far as the way I swing goes I'll stick with the wife thank you very much.
Back on point I had an 84 xtra cab and it was by far the best truck I've ever owned.

Personally, I don't care for small pickups, but I'd say Toyota builds the best one. I know a lot of guys that swear by 'em. Also I'd bet that a Chevy 1500 with a 4.3 gets gas millage close to a Toyota V6.

OK you guys are right. Toyota and Nissan isn’t comparing apples to apples. The Toyotas are in there own class IMO. They ride better, are quieter, have as much or more power then the Nissan, and are by far larger in every aspect. FJ remember having to flip your seat forward to access behind the seats? I remember it in my 89 being a pain in the ass. Both the Nissan and Toyota have suicide doors and the ones on the Toyota are huge. You can fit an adult in there thou I wouldn’t do this for to long of distance. The front facing seats also fold down making a flat storage area like your stroker Joe. Plenty of room for a dog or a large amount of gear. The engineers at Toyota have done an excellent job on improving an already superior product. The Tacoma is no longer a small truck and Klick there is no way in hell I would even think about putting a GM product up against one. 70% of the parts are made in the USA and all of the trucks are assembled in this country.
The only thing I don’t like is Toyota puts there options in a package (more then the others) and the main packages like the TRD or Sport package are not cheap. I test drove a 4.0L 5 speed auto with the SR5 package. 26K for this truck and it doesn’t have a towing package (couldn’t believe this) and didn’t have limited slip differential. I can do without a lot of things but these are 2 things that are really nice to have when pulling a sled out of the Clearwater in December.
More to come as the research continues and I’ll tell you this… as soon as I sat in the seat of the Tacoma my ass sent an instant message to my brain that it needs one of these

I'd consider a Toyota if I ever found one that I was comfortable in. I doubt that's going to happen. I think their target person size is smaller than me.

I have owned a hell of a lot of rigs and LOVE my 1999 Toyota Tacoma TRD 3.4l(The Yoter). I'm not a "little" guy and I have plenty of room! It's not a great rig to load up the wifer and son, but we take the wifers rig if we need to. I will look at a newer Tacoma or Tundra when I decide to repalce The Yoter in a couple of years.

OK I figured out what I want. If I’m going to pull the trigger the recoil should be there. How about a 06 Tacoma with the access cab and TRD Sport package. Coloring is going to be Indigo Ink Pearl (Dark Blue) with a gray interior. With the TRD Sport package you get all the options and then some. I upgraded to the JBL stereo system. I just got off the phone with the salesman and after some searching there isn’t such a truck in existence in the seven surrounding states. He wants to sell me a black one What do you guys think should I make them build it to my specs I'll get it on or around May 1 and it'll roll off the line April 18 This is almost wrong
I'm thinking normal is boring!

Longer then you know Jim I'm driving a 89 4runner (225,000 miles) that doesn't have a radio, the emergency brake cable is broken, the windsheild is spidered in several places, and my ass has being driving piece of chit rigs for the last 16 years while making payments on new ones.
On a positive note the 4runner did pull 28mpg last trip to Lewiston at warp speed

Patience is a virtue, Grasshopper. Get the right rig. If you don't get exactly what you want, you will regret it later. Remember my story about me getting the gas motor in the 1999 F-250? If I'd have done the right thing and got the diesel in it, I'd still be driving it. It was an expensive lesson for me. Be patient and get the truck you really want. If not the buyers remorse will eat at you till you go drop another $35,000+ on the one you should have bought in the first place.
