Obviously has the cash to travel. Some of those pics are from upstate New York. One from Eastern Idaho. I'm not sure, but some looked like Pennsylvania pictures I saw in a magazine.

The dude's from SoCal...

Yeh, the guy's got it going on as far as I'm concerned. 1. He knows how to catch fish, and 2. He can afford to spend time doing it.

Solar panel installation, hmmmm.....probably not in Idaho!

Mr BrownTrout,
In response to your question about the lures I use on the Boise for big browns in the winter, I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to share my approach with anyone who is interested….
If you want to catch browns on the Boise in winter with hardware, get yourself some ¼ oz. or larger chartreuse, yellow or bright green Roostertails with brass blades, head down to the very end of ParkCenter blvd, where you can park on the gravel and walk over to the greenbelt, find a nice looking spot and start chucking wherever looks deep. Work your way up or downriver. I prefer downriver from that point. The fish picture I posted earlier came from a spot about 200 yards down from here. I’ve had good luck from sunup to noon. Then again right at dusk.
I use a spinner I build myself. It's based on a swing blade spinner like a Worden's Roostertail. I started building my own because to get into the right spots (deep and in the rocks) you wind up losing a lot of lures. (Hence my subtitle “Chumming with Lures). I couldn't afford to lose a half dozen Roostertails or more every time out, so I got myself a Tackletool from Fishermans Shack, found a source for quality swing blades (with the cool scale pattern stamp like the roostertail blades) which is a place called Jann's Netcraft. I mostly use brass #5 swing blades, but have been experimenting with the nickel.
I build what I think is a better spinner than the Roostertail for a number of reasons. First of all, the clevis Worden's uses are a folded type clevis, and I believe the stirrup clevis reduces friction on the spinner shaft, which enables the blade to spin more freely. Anyone who has spent much time tossing Roostertails will find that by the nature of the design, they can be a bitch to start and keep spinning, and the stirrup clevis makes a big difference. Another problem with these types of spinners is the brass blades are thin enough that they start bending around the body after being cast and flung around for awhile, and this severely inhibits the blade from initializing a good spin. I keep needle nose pliers in my pocket and when the blade starts to “curve”, I give it a little sideways pinch to flatten it out again, and quite often bend the very tip of the blade out. (See picture) This really helps get it spinning quickly. I like to use the sharpest hooks I can find because I'm a staunch believer in the hook being the most important factor in the strike to net ratio, and again, the hooks on most store bought lures leave something to be desired. The spinners pictured here have treble hooks, I now use single siwash hooks for all of the spinners I make. And I pinch the barbs.
I make the bodies out of ¼” hollow core pencil lead. I unroll it and cut it into ¾” to 1” pieces, then I give the ends a quick once over with a file to round ‘em off a little.
Sometimes I need to ream the core a bit to get the wire through. I heat each one with a lighter or mini-torch and dip it into a colored powder coat then quickly into the clear top coat with sparkles. You gotta have sparkles! . It’s very important to bake them in the oven for twenty minutes to make the coating indestructible. I didn’t do that at first and the coating flaked off after 10 minutes. The final assembly takes about two minutes apiece, and the final cost per lure (depending upon the hook you use) is about $0.50.
Chartreuse and bright green. I actually caught three browns in a row last winter using an orange-red body, and have since occasionally gone back to that with very limited success. Yellow, bright green, chartreuse; I can’t stress it enough. The limited light in the winter and the visibility of the river (usually one to three feet at best) during November through March dictate that you need to use a color that will get their attention. It’s possible that other colors work better on different days depending on the light, but I could spend years….so I just stick with this color 85-90% of the time in the winter.

I did notice that most of his big fish were taken during the spawn. I tend to think that people should leave them alone during spawning time.

I fish some classic brown water (often) and lay off the fish during the fall. I've seen many dead ones laying on the bottom because people spent too much time fighting them when they were tired from spawning. You catch the pre-spawn fish, you are reducing their chances of surviving spawning season. You catch the post spawn fish, you can kill them easily from exhaustion. You fish for and catch spawners, you are a pathetic loser that needs the gratification of showing off a big fish more than ensuring that fish's survival.

I'm sorry, but catch that same fish in August, when it's actively feeding on size 18 BWO's, you have accomplished something. Scare it into striking a big streamer in November, and you may just kill it.

I know you guys fish the winter, and catch some toads. I'm not slamming you. I just looked at all those pics, and it kinda makes me sick.

I agree with you for the most part. There are exceptions to everything, though. There have been a few times when I specifically targeted spawning fish and I will tell you why. It wasn't because I'm a pathetic loser, or because I need some gratification I'm not getting at home. I'm an artist. I do highly detailed colored pencil renderings of salmonids. These are not crayon drawings, these are in fact award winning life size works that even at close range have been mistaken for photos. I often target a specific species for reference photos and that includes (though fairly rarely) fish in full spawn dress. I am a responsible angler and when I fish for these fish they are handled quickly and gently released.

yeah there is a difference between fishing for spawners in the fall and just fishing in the fall in general. Not all brown trout spawn at the same time in the fall and I don't target the spawners either. I see people on the Owyhee in the fall ripping buggers and what have you through the spawners, I don't consider this fishing and thats why I stay away from there in the fall. There has been many a day in the summer when I have caught double digits of browns on the owyhee on small dries when even some of the best guys out there couldn't get a fish. I speak for myself but if you look in the areas where downtown brown fishes, he fishes the deep holes not the riffles where last time I checked fish spawn.

Read my post. I said I was talking about the guy from SoCal.

I realize there are cases (like Downtownbrown's) where you need reference photo's. No biggie if you catch a fish or two for pics. I can live with that.

What I'm talking about are the folks that are targeting spawners and vulnerable pre / post spawn fish. I too fish the Owyhee. I fish it in October and November. During those months I target bows, and smaller fish that are no where near spawning water. I also confront the snaggers and pathetic fools that are trying to disturb those fish that are attempting to provide me with fishing opportunities 5 years down the road.

Don't stress out over what I wrote. I just think the SoCal dude is a little pompous. I gave him his props for catching his pigs. I'll leave it at that.

Steelheadkid you told me in another thread that you specifically target fish moving into loggers creek to spawn
you said:
"Hey Downtown Brown do you ever go up loggers creek in the fall when some of the browns get up in there to spawn. I caught a couple this year that went eight pounds on my fly rod it was awesome.
To which I replied:

"A friend of mine who was on probation told me about the time his probation officer walked into his house and right into his bedroom while he was gettin' greezy with his wife.
Maybe that's not the best analogy, but it's widely believed it's best to leave the spawners alone when they're vulnerable like that."
Now you're changing your story.?

Hey Mojo,
I agree with you man.

I think that people should leave the spawning fish alone.
We have problems with people taking spawners up here all the time. It really hurts the fishing for the future.

Now fishing egg patterns to Bows right below the spawning browns is a different storie all together. I got a 23" football on Silver Creek a few years ago doing just that. I know in AK you guys pound the bows and char below spawning salmon. I gotta do that sometime.

Hey Guy's I was just checking the links into my little solar energy web site and see that you found my brown trout pic's. It cracks me up some think I'm pompous. LOL. I'm not rich either. Just a solar panel installer who lives in SoCal and needs to travel to catch decent fish. I try and take at least one trip out of state each year, went to Chile once for 10 days, a trip of a lifetime, and did very well catching sea-run brownies. I was about 50 miles up the Rio Grande and the fish were on the move, not on the beds. The water was deep, no sight fishing. It wasn't easy fishing, a couple people on the trip only caught one fish. I have to admit some of the big browns from W. NY were in the streams to spawn, all were released. I truly enjoy catching big browns and wish I lived closer to good waters. I just joined this web site today, looks like a cool place and interesting people. I would be happy to respond to any questions.

Graham

Hi Ron1, thank you for the warm welcome. I dream about going back to Chile, but it's not a cheap trip. I went almost exactly 3 years ago with Jim Teeny, who is finishing up this years Chile trip today. I can't wait to hear how it was. I was fortunate the year I went the conditions were perfect, which has not been true for the years since and before I went, either blown out or too dry. Honestly, I spend more time tying flies than fly fishing, which to me is a sad statement. But, someday I'll leave this smog pit and have enough flies to last me a long, long time. My parents moved up to Gig Harbor WA and I'm looking forward to trying my luck there. I think I'll learn a lot on this web site to help.

Welcome.
I used to work for Lockheed at the Burbank airport.
Ever fish Sand Bass and Calico Bass with a fly? They were lots of fun "fly-lining chovies".

Hey Trouthead, Man, it's a small world, I live in Burbank. I have fly fished the salt localy, and my favorite is catching Bonita in King Harbor in Redondo Beach. I buy a bucket of bait, chum the water and work a surf candy on a lead core line. The challenge is, the fishing is easier in the morning, but thats when the sea lions grab the fighting fish, and leave me with only the head. In the afternnon when the sea lions are sunning and sleeping on the rocks, the fishing gets much slower. Overall it's just fun being out there doin it. My favorite area to fish is around Bridgeport in the E. Sierra, E. Walker river, upper and lower Twin Lakes and my very favorite place Kirman Lake which has football sized brookies.

Boneheads on a Bass rod with top water plugs. What a blast!! Our Steelhead/Salmon guys should hook into a big Bonito or maybe a Yellowtail to see what a real run is like. No Salmon runs like those guys. I used to pretty much live on Puddingstone, Castaic including the after-bay, Casitas and cause I lived in Woodland Hills, Malibu pier and the day boats. Also, liked renting boats by myself in Paradise Cove.

Hey welcome to the boad Graahaam!
I work for an outfitter down in Chile part time. Missed this year due to working through a divorce/custody battles etc. If your thinking about going again let me know. I will be back down there next season for sure. I have some info I could send to you if your interested.
Im excited to have another sea run brown chaser on the board.
I just came back from the E Idaho Fly Tying Expo last weekend and Will Godfrey gave a slide presentation on his trip to Argentina fishing for the sea runs on the Rio Grande. Sure got the juices flowing.
Fishing for sea runs on the Rio Grande is almost identical to the mind set of steelhead, but with wind. You know what I mean.

Tight Lines! and Welcome!

Hey Guy's, I'm sure glad I joined this Forum, just spent the past couple hours learning a lot about fishing the NW. I think chasing sea-run browns is much like fishing for sea-run steel, challenging and fun, great to be there even on the tough days. I've fished with Jim Teeny several times, unfortunatley the $ situation did not allow me to go back to Chile this year, or last. Jim got back 2 days ago, well, hopefully he made it back, will call and see how it was. Last year it was blown out and they spent a week tying flies LOL. Somehow luck was on my side and I hit it when conditions were perfect and it will be hard to beat the experience I had. Best day was 13 fish over 13 pounds (6 Kilos) and several smaller ones. Was on em all day, from dawn till dusk, doubt I'll ever have that happen again. But someday I hope to go back and give it a try, perhaps next year. My parents now live in Gig Harbor and I look forward to fishing the beautful NW, real soon. Looks like I found a great group of knowledgable friendly guys on this forum.

He's here, my heeeerrroooo! Way to go Graham! I'm the guy who did the initial work finding your awesome photos and putting the link in to your site. Took you long enough to find your way back! (HOW EXACTLY DID YOU?) Anyway, surprised and glad to have you aboard, and don't mind Mojo, he's actually very open minded and one of the best fishermen I've ever had the pleasure to fish with.

Hey Gary, It’s real nice to meet you, I’m a fishin fool, probably not truly fit to be anyone’s hero, LOL. Honestly I agree with the things Mojo said. Some of the things I’ve seen on the spawning streams in W. NY is sad, real sad. There are a number of streams in that area that are pretty much undiscovered and at the right time of year are full of migratory browns, steel and salmon (Kings, Coho, and very rarely Atlantics). My wife grew up on a dairy farm around there and when I was visiting about ten years ago a family member mention something about don’t go near the crick, it stink this time of year because of all the fish. Well, that got my attention, the smell is from all the dead salmon in the streams, some of these waters are real small, but are still full of salmon, steelies and browns, around the end of October. Some locals go down and snag (lifting is the local word for it) for cat food and fertilizer for gardens, as well as selling the eggs. I have fished for trout in the Sierra for about 22 years and my first experience approaching one of the streams is something I’ll never forget, a guy pulling two 17 pound browns up a gravel hill on a rope. My heart almost came out of my throat and I told the guy he was ruining his trophy mounts. He laughed and said it was cat food. Others who go for the eggs keep little tampons and zip ties in their pockets so they can plug and tie fish butts and drag em up the slopes without dropping eggs. Catch and release is what I practice. The in-laws and many others in the area fish for warm water fish and think of trout fishers as fa&^*t’s. It’s a very different world there than here. But, reality is that the fish are stocked in Lake Ontario as fingerlings, the streams run dry after the Erie Canal is drained for the winter and self reproduction is minimal at best. I only know of a few streams where water flows most winters and some fish do successfully breed and the fish in these streams are much more colorful and beautiful than elsewhere. I do fish these streams but never on the gravel, usually downstream closer to the lake, where they are on the move and eat. I have memories I’ll never forget, pools full of fish, browns all between 8-18 pounds nudging salmon bellies to get a release of eggs, and fighting over them. Last year I spent an entire day with rod in hand and never once casted, instead watched with my Polaroid glasses on, scenes that I never could have imagined in my wildest trouty wet dreams, right in front of me, nature at its best.

I never would have thought the East coast would be on my long list of fishing destinations, now it is. I've heard a lot about the browns in the big lakes coming into the creeks to spawn, but I never imagined it was like you describe. Cool.
Have you ever fished in Idaho? We've got world class fishing here; Silver Creek, Henry's Fork, and Henry's Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. I can go less than a mile from my house here in Boise and be into browns in the double digits all winter long. Usually get at least one fish over 4 lbs. every time I go. They are all released. We have steelhead and salmon within an hour 1/2 drive, and huge sturgeon within 40 minutes. Also all the warm water species including walleye. We also have super skiing and winter sports as well as killer (no pun intended) hunting. I was raised in Northern California but moved here 25 years ago, I'll NEVER go back.

Hey DowntownBlues, I know you like checking out pics of brownies, so I posted a few in the gallery. You make Idaho sound like paradise, very tempting, thanks.

Graahaam,
Seems I owe you an appology. You appear to have the same philosophy as I regarding browns on the beds. I should have contacted you before slandering you publicly, or at least found out a bit about you. I jumped to conclusions. Hope you can forgive me, and maybe we can fish together some day. I'm just a little more than passionate about fishing.

You definitely got the big brown thing dialed. Some of those TOADS would eat the fish I usually catch for supper.

Hi Mojo, Thanks for your message, no appology needed, we should all be free to express our views openly, and I respect your's. Now you've seen mine, the waters have calmed. That said, I loved looking at your web site, those sturgeon are amazing creatures, even look prehistoric, and almost the size of a dinosaur, well, almost. Someday, I might just take you up on your offer, and come fishing in your neck of the woods, I'm sure we would have a great time.

Graham
