A very bold (and dumb) individual has been posting his "trophy" snagged fish on other forums and bragging about the fact with lots of pictures as proof. He has been banned from several forums for such practices but seems to always find a way to annoy people with new handles. It appears the fish has been snagged out of several AK Rivers illegally not to mention exceeded limits taken. What do you guys think the proper course of action should be?
severals just as examples, notice the huge hook

not enough information to really do anything with at this point. It may actually be legal for him to fish that way even as distasteful as it is.

That would be the infamous BIG STICK! I'd recognize him anywhere. He posted probably a hundred pics of himself, including the famous one of him not wearing pants on a predominately male forum.

Legal, or not...the poses and expressions in the pics makes me think this guy is a real tool! And judging by the partially nude pic posted by Aunty, I'd have to say that his moniker "Big Stick" is wishful thinking and false advertising.

It wasn't a gay forum... which is why he probably shouldn't have posted the above pic for an audience primarily consisting of hetero fishing males.
We gave him grief for weeks, even after he was banned.

It’s the same guy who was banned from TheHighRoad numerous times. He used to post pictures of other peoples game/fish and claim fame as his. I also recall him bragging about having rifles under 16" barrels without federal approval, basically committing felonies. That fish looks like freshwater and under limit size. He is a tool for sure.

Here is another thread of such matter
http://www.steelheader.net/ubbthreads/sh...5/o/all/fpart/1
That bigstick guy used to brag and claim how he was the best hunter on the face of the earth and the best fisherman too, I remember everyone laughing at him about 3 or 4 years back on the "other" forum. He used to post pictures of local game taken and never would say which were actually his, very shady. So much for "fishing" skill too I guess, I wonder if he is still trolling someplace.

Easy. Find fish holding in a pool. Toss large treble hook on far side. Let it sink to the bottom. Set the hook. Steelhead on.
I understand what the "bottomless" picture is. He's trying to open a fishing space on the gravel bar. If you saw him in this condition, would you fish on the same drift? Nope, me neither.

That guy without pants looks like a guy I know from Prince of Wales the other pics (steelhead) I can't view or find for some reason, so I can't verify with only one pic I know him personally and you people need to get the facts correct before accusations, I know for a fact that he has a subsistence permit and that allows the taking of any size steelhead in certain (not all) rivers on POW but there are quite a few, it also allows the use of bait snagging using fish spears and such most subsistence fishers use regular rod and reels with I think a limit of up to 20 steelhead a year on the island,
have you to know this has nothing to do with state laws (alaska fish and game) these are federal laws which precede state laws subsistence has number #1 priority in this state
also it doesn't matter if you are white tribal/native or black or whatever it is all based on the community you primarily reside in all you people which I assume are mostly "gussuks" white people could move to Prince of Wales say Craig tommorrow and in one year when you become a Alaska resident would have the same subsistence rights on steelhead/deer/salmon as someone like my buddy who has lived their for years or even generations.
I was there last spring and witnessed him legitamatly land tens of steelhead by legal means, I even questioned the dead steelhead in his freezing and all the egg cure around and he said he fills his subsistence card every year, no problem what he is doing is legal
he helped me to spots around island and he showed me hundreds of video/pics of steelhead caught by legal (state) regulation of which 95% percent were released he probably catches a couple hundered steelhead a year so if if catches 300-400 which I have know doubt having been there to fish myself and kills 10-20 for food on the table thats 3-5% total how many people total are killing steelhead on the island I would say very few maybe 50 people on the whole island of maybe 5,000 population if that
is it distateful to viewers to see steelhead snagged and killed yes but I don't know if explained that he was subsistence fishing or not I haven't seen his post personally I can see why people would be upset without an explanation, does it make him an illegal snagging poacher by just the pic,
No like most things people don't know all the facts

Sealhumper, You're absolutely correct in that your friend may lawfully "snag" Steelhead under a subsistence permit here on P.O.W.. Good for you in standing up for your friend, but my question is this: If the man in question is such a great Steelhead fisherman as you claim ("he showed me hundreds of video/pics of steelhead caught by legal (state) regulation of which 95% percent were released he probably catches a couple hundered steelhead a year so if if catches 300-400 which I have know doubt having been there to fish myself") why does he need to snag them? I've fished Steelhead for 10 years here on P.O.W. and know some of the better Steelhead fishermen here on the island and none of them would be caught dead "snagging" them on purpose, but I don't recognize your friend. That really doesn't mean much, I just don't recognize the guy. As long as he has a subsistence permit and is honest in his harvest records, I've got no problem with it. Hey it's legal and who am I to judge him for acting within his legal right. I just don't personally believe in "snagging". I feel anyone who has any idea on how to fish can catch one when the conditions are right. NOT throwing out a large treble hook and snagging them. Also, you speak about knowing all the facts about the guy in the picture and tried to touch briefly about Steelhead subsistence. Too bad your facts are incorrect. You wrote about if he kills "10-20 Steelhead for the table", guess what? That's over limits for subsistence. Spring season last from 3/1 to 5/31 and the limit is 5 per household. Then there is also a total season cap of 500 fish per season. The winter season runs from 12/1 to 2/1 and has a household limit of 2 with a total season cap of 100. These season caps are for the whole island. So if your friend were to take 10-20, he'd be over the 7 per year allowed. Just brought this to your attention since the last line in your post talks about people knowing all the facts and obviously you don't.

Those pictures crack me up, he looks like Sly Stalones retarded meathead brother. Check out the death grip he has on the fish's gillplate in the second photo. I would NOT be fishing next to big stick, No sir.
Legal or not, anyone who snags fish with a straight treble hook is royal Douche in my humble opinion. Then, if they take proud-papa phots of themselves doing it, well that is just inbreeder icing on the cake.

I spent a few years logging. Some of it shouldn't have been allowed or done differently back then but I believe that it's had far less impact than clearing the land for housing and shopping mall developments.

A good friend of mine is a logger and he tells me stories of the stuff that goes on and it's very bad. He told me about a creek he logged near that was running clear as long as he could remember. After he got done logging a mountainside that bordered it the creek was running milky brown and thick. This was a couple years ago and it hasn't cleared up yet. They were following all laws about buffer zones too. He's seen bald eagle nests that had fallen, and many other things.
But it's one of those things that needs to get done...unfortionately.

Your enviro's must be asleep at the wheel or chained to another tree and lost the key. My whole family fits the bill and I did it for long enough. The forest circus and private inspectors show up on your job a few times a week. I would bet there was something else involved with the erosion issues. Burn perhaps?

I have to agree as well Gooose!!!
When timber companies log there are trees planted back, when asphalt is laid down you can forget about a tree growin back!!
Nick can you say renuable resource???
Although Nick I had to get a kick out of the "20ft base" please let me know when you find one that big without going to the redwood forest I have cut timber all over washington, oregon, idaho, alaska and northern calif. and never seen a tree 20ft dbh. But then again they never cut me loose in the redwood forest or it would be nothin but stumps now

I had to deal once with a cedar butt cut that went 12 feet across the butt and around 8 or so feet at the 40 foot mark where the fallers bucked it. I to this day believe the damn Bull told them to do that as he knew my tower was the one that was gonna have to get it out of the woods. We weren't too partial to each other. We were on a flat swampy unit below Mctheney Ridge aka Mud Creek...Timber has probaly stomped around that ground some. Should have heard the radio chatter when I called the yard that morning before work for log trucks for the day.....3 lomgs and a mule in the morning that could go to another side on their next runs. The chatter was due to my request for a Low Boy truck. The owner of the company Mayr Bros. sure as heck wanted to know what I wanted with his Low Boy truck as we weren't scheduled to move any equipment. The Bull chimed in saying as usual I was a nut case. I simply responded by telling them to have the gawd damn Low Boy backed into the landing at lunch time and walked off the landing to my rigging rat crew. 4 hours later we moved that damn log the 1,000 feet thru the mud to the landing...dropped the rigging off the mainline and shackled the mainline just a tad towards the the butt from the balance point and picked it up while having the loader grapple and maneuver it around...backed the Low Boy in under it and dropped it carefully in place. Low Boy driver is looking at me with this what the f**k look...I shrugged my typical f88k you you are just a truck driver shrug and my crew of rigging rats chained and binder jacked that piece of wood in place and sent the load to Hoquaim. We finished the day yarding some nice cuts of spruce. The owner never said a word to me...never expected one as I was just doing what was expected of me. The Bull never did say a word also...we never did like each other and the owner knew he tried to screw me. No need for me to ever say anything either...some times silence is the deepest cutting knife.
I've worked some units with large cuts of timber in them but anything past 10 feet in butt diameter was an extreme rarity. Working cuts of spruce was the most challenging with typical logs being 6 to 8 feet. That was always on flat ground. The scariest was large old growth Doug Fir and Piss Fir which was always on steep slopes. One of them breaks a choker or comes loose uphill of the rigging rats everyone was living on ultrapure adrenaline.
Sorry for the digression from the subject of the post...just having nostalgic flashbacks of when I was young and the world belonged to me.

In the summer when the saps running there is always close calls on steep ground.Nothin like bellin up a 5-6 footer long enough to pick it up and have the snare slip right off..I had a couple tower sides when I had my loggin company but 95% of the time I was on the fallin end of my crew..Even then in the summer it could be fun if the caulks werent sharp and the sap was runnin and bark slippin off if'n you werent carefull alot of time was spent pickin yourself up off the ground Them trees are like there greased when the bark slips off..
I cut alot of big timber in my 20 years at it but personally 24 to 36" timber was alot easier to deal with..

steeliednr,
Your first proper action, would be to get facts straight.
Firstly,a popped gill goes a nice way to increasing the relative tablefare of a victim. Now my preference is to reach within the gillplate with and index finger and sever a few gills on one side and let things bleed, prior to dressing them. It takes a certain amount of dexterity, but with practice, one can reliably accomplish the task in mere seconds. Rest assured,I've got it down pat.
Now a 5/0 LazerSharp isn't my idea of "huge",but it is my favorite terminal tackle for dredging chrome. With but a short shot of 3/8" hollow core pencil lead affixed on the mainline(mainline threaded through it's center),in front of the hook, one can rip through the weater in a straight line to very good affect. I've a marked preference for a lengthy rod,so as to maximize the relative stroke and think highly of the means for arranging fresh BBQ's.
I see Samonid ID troubles you,but that is a Silver Salmon(Coho),obviously in saltwater,as per the very telling Marine backdrop.
I much look forward to clarifying your numerous shortcomings and will go to length to do so.
Headed to the creek with the kids,a gaff hook, bucket of eggs and a camera.
Will try to cheer you up,on my return.

Things taste better, when bled and she wanted him for dinner this evening. Personally,I think both were good calls.

Should touch on some "shady" stuff for backwoodearl.
I like the shade in this one.

Fill-flashed the shade in this one,but it caught the blood nicely.

The short barreled thing cracked me up too, will touch upon that later...amongst other things...............

I don't think the Big Bucks get cute, until they are in their prime,a touch later in the year. Early capes never did turn me on,much in the way beat up fish do nothing for me.
Will be looking for a cute one today, however,as it is that time of year.

I don't lament the fact that my home sets in the very spot, where 1000yr old trees once grew, nor the fact that I killed same.
In fact,I think that much sweetens the pot and adds much satisfaction to the equation.
Money DOES grow on trees........

Bigstick- Admittedly you are well versed in many areas of life and even have photogenic proof of this (as evidenced by the hundreds of pics that you rapid fire off). I for for one enjoy your pics very much as it gives me motivation to someday be able to fish the waters that you get to fish on a weekly basis. That being said.......do yourself and everybody else a favor and lose the antagonistic attitude and you will get much further and maybe even stay around for a while to share the wealth of info that it appears that you have. Don't take this personal just an observation. Keep the fish porn coming

Chris and Tim thanks for the posts. Good observations and advice in both. I personally appreciate Big Sticks pics of timber harvest, some damn nice blacktails, and fish. I also like reading his posts about rifles, ammo and hunting. Consider giving each other a break folks? This site has always been the home of people who did not fit in a common mold and welcomed them. The site owner and mods sure would appreciate it.

'fool(an apt moniker),
I was/am simply responding to a Witch Hunt and have zero interest in a Popularity Poll.
What Urban Dwellers do,day in/day out, interests me less than none.
It is a constant,in that those that initially want to tell me things, end up asking a myriad of questions. I'll often go out of my way to help the genuine and am troubled little,in rubbing the noses of others into the obvious.
I've steeped in much, but never did suffer fools gladly........................

But then again they never cut me loose in the redwood forest or it would be nothin but stumps now
I grew up in the redwood forests of California. I've seen trees that would make a Washington logger cry at trying to cut down.
The 20' base I was referring to was an exaggeration btw.

'Chris,
Read the Thread start to finish. Some misguided malcontents, talk copiously out their ass and those of like IQ follow suit with glazed eyes in Sheeply fixation.
I speak matter of factly, because facts matter and do not feel compelled to apologize for the truth and the results they continually bear.
I've caught an inordinate number of exemplary fish, everywhere I've been and that covers more than a few locales.
Being very good,doesn't happen accidentally.
Much to that, irregardless of your embracing that fact.............

I've cut much Redwood and the vast percentage of that PL holdings. Redwoods are easy,in that they inhabitat favorable topography, are a very softwood and they are not very dense.
I've never cut a Spruce over 14' diameter, though I'm still looking in eager anticipation and would do so for free(and in consumate fashion)..................

BigStick, I guess it isn't as hard when using step boards. Cutting down some of those 2,000 year old monsters at the actual base would probably not even be feasible with most standard old growth logging equipment. But what do I know, i'm a welder, not a logger.

I've tower logged several units on the OP where I ran up against Spruce butt cuts in the 14 foot size range. Each one was actually a hollow shell. Each time part of me was pissed as the challenge of getting them to the landing if they were solid would have been a test of my crews skill.

Springboarding merits, are dependent upon a myriad of factors.
Firstly, the Grade of the butt log and secondly, the amount of time saved, getting same into your hat.
Grade comes first, because that is finance. Oftentime,flutes/bark seams are to be avoided at all costs,as is an off-centered heart,as well as a number of other viable concerns. Heart check, sap rot, yada, yada.
I'm more apt to leave the board behind and reap the available volume,at ground level, via superlative tooling. That is usually a far faster way to make logs and time IS money,on a Bushel Show.

Never cut much in the way of Piss Fir...nor lament that fact.
Have slummed towards/over the Cascades now and again and have thrown some lunker Sugar Pine in the hat.

Stick I was never a cutter...my younger brother chose that path after several years on the rigging. All of my experience was logging road construction and the rigging. But I always enjoyed watching the fallers working a unit of big trees ahead of us. Cut...cut...and cut some more then break out the jacks and carefully finish cut as the tree was jacked over. Then it was my job to figure out how to get those logs to the landing and loaded. Biggest solid Spruce was around 12 feet, cedar around 16 feet, never tackled a Doug Fir above 10 feet. Hardest core thing I ever had to do to get a large piece of timber to the landing was to run strawline out for the road for the layout and drop the skyline from the tailhold and run it up to the log. We shackled the skyline around the butt end and yarded it in old school. Hooked everything back up and went back to modern logging. Yarder engineer( a young guy) was freaked out by the whole process.

People are entitled to their opinions, but i do see some malcontents and what people need to realize is that this is the damn internet people, the man has a valid point! Unless you hear it from the horses mouth, don't consider it valid! I have been following this post for quite sometime bigstick and in some ways i see you are the same type of individual as I! In some cases, there have been some misguided malcontents written about myself by others, but we as MEN have risen above them and friendship has prevailed! We all share a love for the same thing the great outdoors! If it weren't for the great outdoors, i wouldn't be the young man i am today and would've have such a vast memory bank of experiences i have shared with my family and friends and neither would you my friend! I see great young hearts in the pictures of your young ones and it brings back memories of my young child hood with my grandfather and uncles! They taught me young, but i teach them today, i don't shower myself with my own pride or predjudice but rather pass on the knowledge i know to the next generation or the less fortunate. It would be more than great if you could share some of yours with some of us and learn from each other on here. This board is not Piscatorial Pursuits, not Ifish, not gamefishin.com, but STEELHEADER.NET and in my beliefs, we have a stronger community than any other board. We have all gained some of our knowledge from someone else wether it be family, friends, or foe and i know that doesn't disclude you, but its not like any of us invented everything we know! I personally believe that if you were at a flotilla with us, you'd probably be sitten there drinking the frosty beverage of ur choice, rantin like the rest of us a$$hole and lettin some testosterone fly! When i first started postin on these boards, i thought i was all that and a bag of chips, but i've learned otherwise. For you can never stop learning and never stop better yourself, soak it up, you only live once. On that note, i hope we all can enjoy your post and you can enjoy ours and make some friends! Now, i think i have a pic for you bigstick!

I did know a gal called Peppermint Patty who tended bar at the Cocktail lounge in Amanda Park(Lake Quinalt)...about 6 foot 5 inches tall....she eradicated an entire rigging rat crew from Mayr Brothers in about 10 minutes. Seven young tough men chose the wrong person to abuse....I evacuated my rigging crew to the parking lot a few minutes beforehand to observe and learn an important lesson. Gawd them wre the days of my youth!

Were we setting in close quarters,I'd of opened up with a rather impressive knockout of the douche bag that muttered the lies that started this Thread. Would have probably kicked a lung out of him after the fact,if only because I could...but that's how I roll.
Then I would have been happy to put on a Fishing/Hunting Exhibition,if only because those things come as easily.

Stick in my experience enticing physical interactions aka fights between newbies on the rigging and fallers was a right of life and learning for those young lads. Never did care who won the fight. It was simply a lesson needed for them to learn about the heirarchy of those who chose to work in the timber industry. In my opinion the only ones who ranked above fallers at the top was the climbers and tree riggers. I did my share of that when needed but never considered myself to be one. Never could drop the top out of a tree then climb on top to show I was the best beast of the woods.

Whining? No actually it was a civil request and a warning. If you don't know the difference then as pointed out the solution is so laffin reely simple. Click you are gone. You are entertaining but as pointed out that is just a simple click from ending. Your laffin choice....and if it is for one of us to simply hit click no one here will ever suffer from that choice. As stated...simple as that.

Well folks, another classic Big Stick 100 post in 24 hours marathon. I wish he could keep it together, tone it down a bit so he does not get his ass canned every time he shows up on a forum. The guy has a lot to say, and has a style all his own.. but its pretty predictable if you have seen in before. The ends always the same, he's gone.
Admit it... its the most entertainment this site has seen in a long while

BRUN_STEELIE said: Well folks, another classic Big Stick 100 post in 24 hours marathon. I wish he could keep it together, tone it down a bit so he does not get his ass canned every time he shows up on a forum. The guy has a lot to say, and has a style all his own.. but its pretty predictable if you have seen in before. The ends always the same, he's gone.
Admit it... its the most entertainment this site has seen in a long while
Maybe if the entire point of this whole thread hadn't been to bash him into the ground, it wouldn't have been this way.
Looked to me like he has his act together pretty well. Haven't seen that many cool pics posted before.
Don't we click 'i agree' to some kind of standards of behavior when we register? Seems like I did.
I guess it doesn't apply to everyone.

It would have went that way sooner than later anyway Goose, it always does. I've seen his stuff before. Interesting as hell and then goes down hill.

Chromeseaker- I understand what you are saying about bashing on BS. To tell you the truth I like having the guy around. Adds a whole new meaning to the word entertainment. Unfortunatly his path of distruction has been well documented on other boards. I agree that he had the right to defend his honor.....but even in this thread he went way beyond that. RIP BigStick.......
