Does anyone on this site live or fish for steelhead in the Willamette Valley. More specifically, the Middle Fork of the Willamette?

  Hey there nice to meet you. My name is Russell. Are you doing any good? I was on the Willamette between Dexter and Pengra just yesterday and got skunked. Although I am sure that there are tons of steelies being caught, I saw them. The salmon seemed to have disappeared with all the low water. What stretch do you fish? Russ

I live up the road aways, I am wanting to figure out the M.F.
I fish some other rivers that are not too far from there though.

You might also try www.ifish.net for the info you seek. It's an Oregon-based board and a lot of the members fish the Willamette valley.

Hey there Rustler. I've been floating that section about once a week with my wife's uncle for about the last three months. He's the one who has been nice enough to help me try and figure all this fresh water stuff out (I grew up in the South Pacific -Kwajalein M.I.). He was also on that stretch of water and said it was a zoo yesterday. It may have had something to do with it being free fish weekend.
I have not yet had any success from a dang boat. I have however, managed to tie into three hatchery fish from the bank over the last 2 weeks. In fact, my avatar is from yesterday mornings dawn patrol before church. That fish was 29 - 30 inches and in the 10 lb. range. I also C 'n R'd a smaller native prior to that. My first double! I was stoked to say the least. And to top it all off, it was within walking distance of my house. That was simply a choice bonus.
With that all said, tomorrow or Wednesday, we are planning to float from Pengra down to Jasper. Have you ever done that stretch of water?

Thanks for the info Salt. Would it be wrong to also continue using Steelheaders as well. I've gleaned a ton over the last three months from all the old rods on this site who have been kind enough to share their knowledge. Besides, you have to admit "Steelheader.net" sounds a whole lot more chrome related than simply "Ifish.net" LOL

I agree we have good folks from oregon here too!! In the past our oregon member numbers were down but has increased alot as the board has grown.

Hello Slowmoe good job on your double. And yes I know that drift and at the low water, that it is at right now, many of the riffles are impassable. Some of them you need to drag your boat up to 5 yards or so. If you do go, the river splits many times, stay to all the left hand channels that you can. the left side contains the most flow. There are a good many tailouts to explore on that drift though. Let me know what happens.

Why on Earth would anyone want to live there? I guess its an okay place if you like the Ducks, smoke pot, cause problems and you are a throw back from the 60's.

Ive fished pretty much every river in my area and beyond. I stay away from the MFW and the Mckenzie, The crowds down there are a touch off........... The S. Santiam is a good one for summers and springers. In the Fall Im on the coast, as well as in the winter. A good winter fishery for you would be the Alsea. The Siuslaw is good for fall fish. Peoples Repub of Eugene is right! That's why I live in Springtucky. I only cross to the wrong side of I-5 when I have no other choice.
So you say the Alsea can be good? I have to admit that I've never even seen it though not living that far from it. I guess I'll have to remedy that soon! I may very well take you up on your offer... just as soon as things slow back down at work.

Well boys as an airtraffic controller I nee dto live by the airport, So thats why eugene although I havent looked too much into houses untill I know for sure. I think I will look into springfield too. How far a drive is it to the airport from a nice place on the river in springfeild? I have only been to eugene once.

KK, Junction City is Close too, as well as Harrisburg. Both those places are on the Willamette. The Willy there has some great trout fishing.

Well Kenai,
I live very close to the west side of Springfield and the airport is roughly 20-25 minutes from me depending on traffic. IMHO, there really is not a lot of housing directly on a river. However, you should be able to find something within 10-30 minutes of either the Mckenzie or the MF Willamette. And, as Willie just pointed out, Junction City might also be a good option for you.

All the rivers around Hell (Eugene) are sleddable at times. But a dritboat is more a better choice.

My daughter just quit her job at the Eugene tower, she has been an airtraffic controller for about ten years. She starts her new job tomorrow, a RN. GO FIGURE!
As to housing,(I just retired and moved to Springfield)the taxes are less in Springfield or I should say just outside of city limits. This advice passed on from the realtor and daughter. She also lives just outside of Springfield city limits. The drive from Springfield or parts there of should take 15 to 20 minutes. My commute in LA would take me one hour at 5AM in the morning, the trip home later in the day or night was like rolling the dice in Vegas!
Anyway the fishing is better than Los Angeles, but I bet the fishing is better in Alaska!

I still love you pauly  . To be fair I have learned a ton from fishermen way better than I am and still have alot to learn. Paul is a master, I am just a student. I grew up up on the kenai but never knew how to fish well until I moved to oregon.
