it is still early here, but fishing is getting more steady, yesterday was my first multiple fish day, and i got 3. if we get rained on, it will really improve. here's a couple pics from the last few days

used or gained? i went through 3/4 quart for 3 fish yesterday and gained it back with 2 hens kept. with sringers in this low water, it usuall only takes 2 or 3 baits to catch a fish, i just don't know when to stop. yesterday was the first day i got bit after 8am.

How many glass jars you break? Looks like your running combo baits. What cure you using for those eggs? They look firm verse a more liquid/sticky cure time.
Nice to see you hammering the kings. I suspect those early bite times are from light conditions on the water. I have always had better luck early and late in the day on kings.

actualy marty, the jars are plastic, i went through the glass jar phase this fall, not a fan. one jar was 3-2-1 with some cure for color, one was pautzke and pro cure, and one was nates bait black cherry. i like firm eggs this time of year because they hold up, of course you saw the shrimp, but the sardines were hiding  . every day seems to be different, so i like to cover all of my bases. when thing get slow, i like to put a jensen egg above my hook for the anise scent. eventually you can find something they want. i don't have any bait secrets, i just fish hard and pay attention. it was strange yesterday, the bite was very slow, but they bit later in the day as good as at light. it was funny, no bites for about 2 hours and they were rolling like crazy, they quit rolling and there were 2 bites, a guy missed one and i caught one, right when i tagged that one, my buddy called to brag that he just landed a nice one, on a different river. it seems like they bit everywhere. was it tidal? we were 7 miles from tide. it was strange. marty, i wish i was hammering them, it realy has been slow here, last year at this time i was getting my 2 in a couple hours everyday. yesterday there was 4 caught a the hole i was fishing, 3-6 guys fishing the whole time, luckily i had the hot rod and got 3 of them, but from what i hear, that is the best bite at that hole all year, it should be pumping out 10 fish per day.

Nice job 365, can't wait to get back at it myself. the ocean's been a little rough with that low that came through this weekend. we had 3 fatalities today off Charleston, they capsized a 17' whaler 150 yards from the beach...... not a 1 of them was wearing a pfd. keep up the good work!

yeah, i heard the story, that south side get's hairy, even on a low swell it breaks, i have been out of charleston many times, i actually will be working out of there within the week. again, good to see you back, we should hook up one day in the winter and fish together, i like to fish around good fisherman. sounds like ya had a good day yourself, them salmon in the salt are fun, talk to ya soon and it looks like the pond should be nice on thursday, 5 ft swell and 10kt wind, your kind of day.

Like to say I been fishing a lot but work has been getting in the way along with my other projects. Fishing has been excellent from local reports, probably better than it has been for springers in years up here. Just need to get my butt out there and put something in there face. I like the aresenal approach to bait fishing too.. ya just never know when the ole standby is getting a skunk. Ever try anchovies or herring? both work if ya got no sardines. I don't normally use anise except as a cover scent, but see nothing wrong with it as a change up. Fishing hard and paying attention will out produce most...

how bout spoons? i stumbled across the last year, fishing for summers, i wanted to catch steelhead that day, and all i could catch was salmon. i do like anchovies, i'm gonna try some mackeral soon, i had good luck on fall fish with it. i have done good on herring, like you said, when you are out of dines. i couldn' count the times when things are dead and i put a jensen egg on aboce the hook and get a bite in the first three bites, it's been a good trick for me. i think alot of it is the fish get so pounded all day, that you just have to always mix things up. if you go with one jar of eggs and shrimp, after the first hour they have seen your bait plenty..... when you do get out, we are looking forward to some kind of report. good luck

prolly tide and moon deal. If you fished that close to tidal waters, according to the current US Navy charts us navy astronomical chart around 8:30-10:30 am you shoulda been  as fast as you could cast.
I have a logbook of several years as my proof that it works if you use the tidal charts (and good ) to your advantage

Tony I believe those strange salmon bites are tidal based even when not in the estuary, they spend there entire life feeding around those times. Never did any research to figure those times out though, interested in what you got on the subject.
Spoons yes and spinners too... right gear fished correctly in the water your fishing is the key. Just like plugs/kwikfish but need a boat to fish those properly. To master any technique you need to leave the other gear at home so you can focus on the fine points of making it work properly.

Here's my evidence (albeit shortened to save 3.75 years of my time typing it all out).
I have printed out the tidal flow charts, lunar phase chart and solar phase chart from US Naval Observatory for the Umpqua River at Reedsport going on 10 years now. I fish peak lunar phases in conjunction with hi and low tide times and have consistently put more fish to the bank (most C&R, but I keep my share of clipped springer hens for bait and table fare).
Now here's where some will go ??? *scratch noggin*
The place I fish 90% of the time is over 60 miles upstream of saltwater. Yet if I target the tidal times, particularly late evening, I have very good success (20 lb avg).
I know it doesn't seem like that far away from tidewater a salmon should feed in the tidal times, but I have my own proof to back it up.

do what you are confident in, steelhead eggs account for many of my springers, if you are in good drift water, it may not be the best bobber water, i'm a little one dimensional when it comes to salmon. i like to get salmon on a bobber, thats about the only way i fish salmon. on the other hand, i hate bobbering steelhead. i like to cast kwikfish in early fall when they aren't snapping bobbers good, but that's about it. get one and post some pics, good luck.

good stuff.. tony let me ask you this.. would the travel time of the fish coincide with distance you are from the salt? Or have have these fish been holding in the pools for some time. I use fishing window time frames too, normally based on tide times and light conditions with some variables mixed in. (for when I am wrong )

is it tide as in tide table? or is it tides where they are? like if the fish is 7 miles up in tide water, is it low tide there or on the table, you may be a couple of hours apart. if you are fishing 7 more miles out of tide, would they bite on the tide, or a couple hours later? it is a quiz that i have tried to put together, nothing yet.... i guess i'm stuck fishing hard.... well, they better hope my reflexes are off this morning, i might just get a bite or two.

These are fish that are usually in freshwater for a couple weeks now. No tidal changes at "the spot" and yet they still behave in the same feeding pattern as if they were out in the salt. Just been my observations over the last bit, well decade at least.
Ifish- If you do fish within the tidal areas of the Umpqua (or any other system), I'm sure you would run into the situation where incoming tide into freshwater will cause the fish to do that.

Tony, using your observations which do you feel has the biggest...or shall I say most reliable affect at the "SPOT"
tidal, lunar, or solar and during which phase of each? the reason I ask is I have a kept a journal, but rather than fish by the charts as you, I have documented fish caught, then referenced back to see how it coincides with the charts rather than limit my time on the water. Just wondering if there are any similarities with our findings?

well, i'm not sure what the tide was doing down the river today, but i got the job done by 7am, 5 bites,2 lost,2 caught and 1 missed. lack of sleep had me a little slower on the response this morning, not a bad morning.

of all things, it looks like i'm going to work. i forgot i had a job, but sure enough, oh yeah, i guess i do. it's about time. i will be back at them next week. good day to end on though. the bigger of the fish, the buck, had a whole herring, scales in all in his belly. pretty cool.

Robert- I bet your findings and mine come out with similar results. I can't specify which of the three is truly the reason these fish bite, I just know that when I use the peaks of all three combined, it works. I think it's like the old Farmer's Almanac charts... week of full moon =
