Gentlemen,
I'll be fishing the deschutes, looking for my first steelie. I need info bad! What to use, colors, flies, jigs, baits, etc. How do you fish jigs anyway? Also locations would help. I am on foot. I hear now is a good time on the Lower D for steelhead. What about salmon? Any info would help. Thanks guys.

I don't think you'll find much in the way of salmon
steelies should be around in good numbers
jigs are productive, but you have to go small (1/8, 1/16, or 3/32 oz) and use with a little lead (counterweight for float) just below, swivel, leader and or any color that you think could be good
I like red head/black body, orange/blk, white/red, white/orange, white/blk, green/blk, purple/blk, and don't forget to try some with metallic heads (chrome or brass/gold) and red, blk, or purple body
There are good descriptions and images of how to use jigs if you search the techniques portion of the board. Prolly get a much better description than what I wrote, but I hope it helps anyway.
Don't be afraid to throw some lightweight and pay attention to light conditions to maximize reflection under low light. Try blk spinners too, or even crocs in firetiger.
Don't rule out a fresh under that if you can find some good ones. Steelies love em! Of course if you find a crawdad under the rocks it will work too, just tail hook it and cast out, expect some chomping action and you should be hooked up! You will have better luck finding closer to the coast I imagine. I know I had no luck finding them anywhere but the coast earlier this summer.

a good friend of mine fishes it alot. he starts out early drifting small spin-n-glo's, then goes to spinners while the sun is high then jigs or spin-n-glos in the evening. he fishes jigs without a bobber often, his good buddy showed him that trick if the water is fast, act like you are drift fishing and give small pops, keep a fairly tight line, slower water, cast them down stream and jig them until they hit bottom and repeat, it sounds wrong but it has worked more than once for us.

Jake, I just got back from the D. My tryed & true method is a peach corky & white yarn. We usually pick up a chinook or 2 drifting for steelies, so be prepared for some bigger fish. will try to post some pics tonight.

Jake,
We catch fish on any number of lures, however bait is not legal in The Deschutes. Some of the more popular lures include tadpollys, a skunk fly or purple peril fished below a water-filled casting bubble, Steeles, and Spinners.
The tadpolly is probably the easiest to learn to fish in this river. The bottom of the river in a lot of places is basalt flow shelves and channels rather than loose rock. Most of the guys I know remove the treble hooks from their tadpollys and replace them with a small swivel and a single siwash hook. This helps reduce the amount of gear lost to snags and may actually increase the hookups on fish. As to color, bring at least one fluorescent orange and a Michael Jackson black rattle tad. A firetiger and a silver with flourescent head also will take fish.
I normally take two poles when I walk up the Deschutes from the mouth. The first is rigged with a casting bubble about 6 ft ahead of a green butt skunk fly, and the second is rigged with tadpolly on a snap swivel so that I can change to steelies or spinners as frustration dictates. Before the sunlight gets on the water, I use the fly, after that I go to lures and spinners.
There is more fishable water near the mouth on the East side of the river. If you start at the park on the Sherman County side the first productive hole is down stream and near the bank where the river passes under the first highway bridge. If you have a means of floating the river such as a small raft or tube, you can go out to the island at the mouth and fish the west side-full length of the island, or the east side lower end of the island. (You must have a life vest if you float in any type of craft. You also must be standing on the bottom and not in the floating devise. A friend was ticketed for standing on the bottom but still in his float tube a couple of years back)
As you walk up the trail along the east side of the river you will come to a cable crossing. There is a long gravel bar in the river about 50 ft out. To fish it you need to wade out or float out and stand on the submerged bar and fish the west side. Spinners seem to work well here as do the tadpollys.
Up river another 1/4 mile and a bend to the right, you will come to Ferry Springs Canyon. There is a huge blackberry tangle just down stream from the small picnic area. Most wad out near the picnic area and fish out and below as they work their way down through this hole.
Above the blackberry hole, there are many small grass clumps in the river, and fish hold in and around those. The water is not very deep, and the bottom glistens from the lost lures...be careful.
A half a mile above the blackberry hole, the river bends back to the south. The rapids here is Rattlesnake or Fense Hole. The water below the rapids is deep and swift. Above the rapids there are numerous fishable pockets all the way up to the next corner to the right.
By the time you have fished this far you will either have your limit, or be out of equipment. Don't give up on a hole with a few passes. Numerous times I have changed from fly to steelie, or steelie to tadpolly and nailed a fish.
Good luck...Corb24

Ifish, similar 'report' from Mark Backmann (flyfishusa) in Welches. Called to place and order and he happen to take the line. Apparently the place is ALIVE! with fish.
They just finished up a two day 'spey casting school' and after class .. ok to put on a hook on the leader. 5 min. later first fish was on! Stayed that way for the next two days.
Appears the question: "Is class over yet?" became pretty common. :>)

I drove past the mouth on I-84 yesterday. One of those rare days when the Criver was glass and we could actually see fish jumping amongst about 30 boats near the buoy there. I was drooling and about caused an accident trying to look upstream as I went by at 74 mph but alas, had to keep driving to get home in time to watch the Hawks beat up on the Giants. Someday, I keep telling myself; I will spend a few days in the desert and explore that river. For some reason it intrigues me.

Fished it on Saturday. Still looking for my fist fish guys. I didn't go very low in the river though. I stayed at Mecca Flat for the day. Some good water right there but not many steelhead, not when I was there. Picked up some trout though. Locally guys are saying that to really have a chance at a fish you have to be at Mawpin (sp?) or lower. Any day now and they numbers will improve closer to home. Come to me my little chrome buddies. Any other reports?

Jake, hang in there bud! You will catch tons of fish with the help of everyone on this great board & persitence(sp?)Here are a couple of pics from 2 weeks ago. We had an afternoon & morning to fish. It wasnt as good as usual, fish seemed to have lock jaw, but we ended up with a couple of keepers. Everyone on this thread has given u great advice, but have u considered fishing a little closer to the big C, & also the green butt skunk is a great tip. U can also use it with a corky on top. When the fish decide to turn on, just about anything seems to work, so keep after it...Also,,There seems to be a sh@t load of snaggers on the D.,so, what I usually do, is kinda watch & ask if they need help releasing that foul hooked fish. Have had some dirty looks, but never have seen a snagged fish kept. Best of luck & show us some pics of the fish that u WILL CATCH.

Nice looking fish! You smoke'm up, BBQ or what? Yeah, the persistence thing is the tough part. If I could I'd fish every weekend but we all know how that goes. I will definately post pics of that first (2cnd, 3rd, etc) fish. By the way, what do you mean by fishing closer to the big C?

All 'reports' I've gotten (people who don't jurk my leg) are 'bug-eyed' at the number of fish in the Des. this year. As is usually the case, find one and you've found a lot!

Jake- whole prawns will work, but I suggest you try to minimze the size of the prawn by cutting it into chunks and fish it with a corkie, under a bobber if you wish. It should save you some $ by only using a chunk of prawn the size of your thumbnail. If/when you locate a school of fish, this fresh bait will be consumed quickly is my guess. Be ready to lay the smack down!
And don't hesitate to put a little bit of yarn in the corkie and try some scents on the yarn too! Sand shrimp, crawdad/anise, garlic/crawdad are all productive in my experience and they can be found at most good fishing retailers or online. I like Pro Cure gels and Mike's.
Good luck Jake!

UPDATE
corb's post indicates bait is illegal in the D, so I'd check the regs to make sure Jake. No sense limiting out with bait only to get a $$$ ticket for illegal fishing. Stick to artificial presentations.

That's a good way to deal with the snaggers! I remember a guy talking about catching 4 fish on the Deschutes and all but 1 of them had unhealed snag scars.

jake, It's still a little early but there are some steelies up in the mecca flat area. Fishing really picks up the first part of november. Fish in front of the shitter. or jig fish across of the old chief's house. there are many good spots down farther. the trail goes all the way to trout creek.
hope this helps.

Scud, when you say jig fish across of the old cheifs house, do you mean stand above that house and chuck all the way to the otehr side? I had been trying to get over there but casts were not making it. I just bought a 9 1/2 foot rod though. Gonna bomb some jigs over there. Any idea how deep it is/how far under my float to fish the jig? Thanks for the info!!!

While I'm at it, does anyone have some words of wisdom on fishing spinners/spoons for steelhead? I'd typically throw straight across, maybe a little higher and retrieve cross current in a large swing for trout. What about for steelhead? THis is probably a dumb question, but I am now 0 for 3. Need to get a fish!

my buddy said they kind of drift fish spinners there, they were fishing size 4 blue fox, i guess if the sun is on the water, you want to throw spinners, mornings and evenings are when to get the jig fish... good luck.

Jake, When fishing across from the chiefs house I usually start with a rod legnth for depth. 9 ft. I don't cast across to the other side. Stay close in and fish the seam. I don't use jigs too much anymore. Except on the sandy river. But I've caught fish drifting corkies & yarn in front of the shitter. But what I hear is the run is 2 weeks later than usual this year. If you realy want to get into them take sfc advice and fish closer to the columbia. (the big c ) I fished the mouth last weekend and saw some real trophies landed. I didn't take any home but hooked a few. Gear up if you head down there. The killer Bs are BIG!!! good luck.

Fished the Deschutes today. The hunt for my first steelhead continues. Saw one guy with a fish, but that is the only one we saw today. We hiked from Mecca Flat along the path down stream for about 2 miles fishing any water that looked good. I did get one nice cut/bow out of the day (3+ lbs range), but that was it. Saw a couple shinook moving up, but it was a slow day for the most part. Good to be out though.

FIshed the Deschutes today. The search for my first steelie continues. I think that it is going to have to come down to being in the right spot at the right time. I tested out my new 9.5 foot spinner rod today. I was bombing spinners clear across the river. Hooked a nice, fat cut/bow (3+ lbs) on a large Meps spinner. Lots of hiking for just one fish though. Fished the "House Hole" with no luck, fished EVERY hole withno luck. We did see some shinook moving up though, whcih was cool. They looked like they were about to fall apart. Nice day on the LD, but still dreaming about steelhead. Thats an update.
