If you were not allowed to use bait for springers, what would your next choice be & why ? I am thinking of hitting the Deschutes & will be fishing from the bank.

Southfork,
They are catching fish on bait at Sherar's Falls. Bait is legal from the falls down about 3 miles to the upper trestle. Crowds in mornings and weekends, but by 10:00 am you can usually find a spot. I caught 1 at the sucker hole at noon today and lost one at the ladder hole. I only fished for 3 hours. The friend I went with caught 1 at the ladder hole. We saw another caught in the ladder and big eddy. A side planer and a wart should pick fish up at the park near the mouth.

They are allowing bait in the D? i have fished that river for the last couple of years & always stuck to the artificial lures. The Oregon regs are always changeing & it's hard to find the up dates. Anyhow, bobber & eggs! Spinners sound fun though. Hopefully I can get away next week. Jake, I haven't heard any reports, but when I steelhead on that river, I usually give the Dalles counts a week or so before I go.

"If you were not allowed to use bait for springers, ..."

Where are you fishing? Next best 'thing' is a 6-8 foot leader (assuming your using gear, not a fly rod) with a corkie just floatie enough to hold it off the bottom.

How about flies? Besides a good roe pattern, what flies will the springers take on the Lower D?

Troy,
I second the vibrax spinner deal. Use those trolling sinkers with the rubber inserts that twist on to your line to get you to the right depth. You want to be just above the bottom. Spoons work great too. Think greens and chartreuse (same with the spinners). Use enough weight to get near the bottom but not snag it.

You can throw your basic drift fishing set-up with a marabou fly like a popsicle, but I'd use greens and chartreuses, with some sparkle. Add a corkie if it is snagging up, to keep the flies out of the rocks on bottom.

Good luck!

how about just using a corky and yarn on about a 24 in leader. I have caught plenty of fish on that simple set up!

Joe,
I understand the green & charuese, but dont have a clue what u are talking about when u say, "trolling sinkers with rubber inserts". I would have shot u a p.m. & asked, but thought , there might be another dumb a*s on the board (besides me ) that would like to know what this set up looks like. Thanks in advance !

Exactly, but that's what 99% of the yahoo's here on the upper Rogue use. The other 1% are guys like me who are still using a fly (spey) rod. This is one of the few times a year I'll actually pull out my 15' 10 weights lined with Ian Gordon intermediate or full sinking 75' heads.

FYI

Be careful if the Baitrix is a soft plastic Oregons Regs consider it bait.

True/false but it is scentless... they say if it is scented then it is considered bait... We had the same trouble with plastic worms...

Copied word for word from the 2007 Regs:

Bait: Any item used to attract fish which is not an artificial fly or a lure. Molded soft plastic or rubber imitation worms, eggs, or other imitation baits are considered bait. Scent is not considered bait.
