Deschutes Reports?
      #298376 - 08/19/07 07:04 PM

Anyone been down to the Lower D recently? Number over Bonnie look good, but are any of those fish finding their way into the Deschutes? I'm headed down early Monday hoping to bag my first steelie.

Have heard its been ok, but crowds are a problem. Find some remote water and you will be ok.

That I did, Tony. Well, sort of. Went 2:4. My first steelie ever went 28 inches. A dandy if you ask me. Will post photos in the general board.

As far as a report goes, there were lots of people out there today, but not too bad. We hiked in from the mouth along the tracks on the west side of the river, and climbed down to fish water that looked good. There were very few people on that West side, but lots on the East side. Was told that the last couple of days has been slow but was expected to pick up with the cooler weather comming in. I saw one fish hooked other than my buddies fish. Heard of several others though. My guess is that it is going to heat up in the next week with all those fish comming over bonnie.

Congrats Jake on your first steelhead! You did it. Sweet
.
What gear were you using?
The Deschutes is gonna be good this year. 2 more weeks fishing should be hot just below the falls.

Congrats Jake!!! My sources have told me the water is a little on the warm side. We need some cooler temps & a nice big rain to freshen things up on the D. I usually get serious about fishing it after the 15th of September. Again congrats!!!

Anyone know what the tules are on cleaning fish on the river? We hike in quite a ways and would be nice if I could cut out fillets, bag'm and put them in my pack for the hike out rather than hauling whole fish out of the canyon. Is it legal to clean, fillet, and discard carcas on the river? Up in AK they told us just to throw the carcas out into main stream and let it go. Thanks.

Another question,

Steelhead tend to get darker as they near the spawning stage - just like salmon, correct? So is it the same in regards to the quality of the meat? When a steelhead starts to get darker in color, does the meat get mushy or bad to eat? Or is does it stay the same "fresh" consistency throughout the stages? Thanks!

p.s. We BBQ'd my steelie for Sunday supper while a coupld chunks sat in the brine. The BBQ was good, but the stuf I smoked was fantastic. My first steelhead was an successful experience on multiple levels. Now if I can just manage to keep the freezer stocked....!

How about Chinook fishing? When does it heat up on the Deschutes? I know most fish near the falls. Will a D River nook take a spinner..... or a FLY??? Thanks.

Jake,

glad you liked the smoked steelie, good stuff eh? I like smoked steelie over smoked springers personally.

Concerning cleaning fish at the river, you will get various opinions, but my take on it is that the biomass you are leaving behind will feed many more critters than what it would if in the trash can.

I asked an OSP warden, while fishing one day, that same question and he point blank told me, "if it should happen to slip through your fingers in the swift current, I wouldn't cite you, no sense drowning over crawdad feed."

So as you can guess, most likely you won't get a citation, unless you find that one warden that had a bad morning.

ps- yes and yes to the salmon ?s

Some game wardens may see the positives of replacing biomass in the river, but some county sherrif or city policeman may not. I would be discreet if I was you, but I do chuck my guts in the river.

DO NOT FILLET FISH ON THE D. The cops like to be able to tell how many fins your fish have. Peach corky, white yarn & you will catch salmon while catching steel.

Ah, yes. SFC makes a good point. Can they site you for having fish meat without proof of a clipped fin? Don't think I'll challenge that one. Better safe than sucker I always say. I'll just gut'm and bag'm. I plan on being on the water at 5 on Sat. If anyone makes it out there, I'm the guy with the bent rod (proly snagged on the bottom). Thanks for the input.

Do minimum length rules apply on the D? In Idaho you need to leave the head and tail attached to the carcass until you are home. Filletting in the field will fetch you a nice fine.

If there are minimum length requirements, you have to keep the fish whole, just gill and gut, while transporting. There we go...

Fished the Deschutes from the mouth up to about 3.2 miles in today. Beautiful day, very cool morning, hot afternoon and evening.... but who wants to hear about the weather? Not me. I went 2:2 today: 1 25 inch steelie, and a suprise nookie! Both clipped, both legal, both bonked, both in the freezer! Both took a # 5 Blue fox in blue w/silver blade. The king was actually a Jack, didn't get a length on it, but is most definately a jack. Pics will be up sometime on Sunday. My poor buddy got completely blanked. This is his first season fishing for steel, maybe his 3rd time out. He was frustrated and bummed and all I could say is, "Trust me. I know exactly how you feel." It takes some time to lear how to do this and I'm stoked to be seeing some results at last.

I also happened to bring in a smallie, which is a new species to check off the ol' list. And we topped the day off with my first sighting of a rattle snake. Great day out there on the Lower D.

Does anyone know when the best time to fish Chinook at Shearers falls is? I'd like to try to get a larger one this year. Thanks.

Jake, I usually fish the D. mid to late Sept., & cant think of a time that I havent caught a nook as bycatch while steelie fishin. I have never targeted the nooks over there because there are so many more steelies. I dont fish that high up. Crowds get awful at Shears when fish are in. Tail end of the month should see the big of the nooks at the mouth. Go get 'em!

Will the larger chinook take spinners like this Jack did?
I know most fish'm with bait, but bait wont be leagal at the mouth if I understand correctly. I think I like your philosophy anyway - fish the steelhead with the incidental chinook here and there. Thanks for the info.

Nice fish jake.
I fished sherars falls sunday and had one chinook take my bait but broke off. Lots of fish rolling. Not too much pressure only a couple of plunkers out there. I think the season closes for fall chinook end oct.

Jake, URBs will hit a spinner , but u got to get i down in the strike zone. That said, peach corky & white yarn. Put your favorite sent on the yarn & drift fish. A little birdy told me that crawdad or krill scent would be a good choice. Good luck .

URB's?

Crawdad or krill says the little birdy? When little birdies speak, I listen. What about scent use in the no-bait areas? Is scent considered baiting? Also, do you just tie the yarn onto the hook, or tie it to the line, or do a snell loop? And how much yarn are we alking about? An inch, two inches, or just a little tuft?

Made plans today to head back down to the Mouth in three weeks. Hope to put my in-laws on some fish.

All the help I get from you guys pays off huge, so thanks.

Up River Brights- the chinook you want

Crawdad or krill says the little birdy? When little birdies speak, I listen. What about scent use in the no-bait areas? Is scent considered baiting?

Triple check the regs, but it should be allowed as it is artificial.

Also, do you just tie the yarn onto the hook, or tie it to the line, or do a snell loop? And how much yarn are we alking about? An inch, two inches, or just a little tuft?

see the pic, the left side is this method

basic setup is to tie an egg loop w/leader & hook, then slide on a corkie, cut a 3" chunk of yarn and a 12" piece of 4# or 6# leader, thread the 4# down thru the corkie and then back up thru the corkie, leaving a loop below the corkie

slip the yarn into the loop and fold at the halfway point, then just pull up on the4# leader while holding the corkie still, trim yarn as needed

the right side of the pic below is just tying the yarn in a simple overhand knot into the egg loop and not through the corkie, but I don't like this method as much as running the yarn thru the corkie

Made plans today to head back down to the Mouth in three weeks. Hope to put my in-laws on some fish.

All the help I get from you guys pays off huge, so thanks.

Took the 2.5 hour drive to the mouth of the D today at 3 am. Hiked in 3 miles and fished until about noon and had to get back. I am up to my old tricks again - that is, getting skunked. No worries though. My buddy got first blood on a pretty little native and a then a 7.5 lb hatchery fish that made it to the cooler. The nate took a # 5 blue fox in blue/silver blade, and the bigger fish took a stonefly nymph from the fly rod. Su-weet! I was stoked to see him finally get into some fish after many attempts. I can relate I guess. Fun day, but no fish for me. Water had risen about 8 inches to a foot since I was there last. Tougher to fish for sure. Saw couple of other guys with fish though, so they are there and obviously taking presentatons. Will post pics of my buddy's fish to go with this report asap.

Yeah, Fred. My buddy fished just outside of Maupin last Sat. and landed 6 in five hours. Had a 7th on but you know how that goes. Sounded like a good day. I was fishing the same day at the mouth and got blanked. Fishing has slowed at the mouth but they are backed up at Shearers Falls. Gonna try to make it up there in the next 2 weeks. Come on up!

Didnt make it out there after all. Did get a report from guys who did though. Fish are really strating to push up past Shearers Falls. So the high section of the lower river should start putting on a show pretty soon.

We were using mostly size 4 spinner's . Addie's fish came in on one of our low and clear's here's the pic. of the happy fisherlady and her catch .

Hey, thats a nice looking nate for the little lady. Way to go! Can't wait to get my boy out fishing next season. Water is looking pretty high at well over 5000 cfs depending on where you are. Might have to leave the flies at home and go straight hardware this time. Thanks for the report.

Out of curiosity, has there ever been a Tilla on the Deschutes?

Thanks again. I'll report on our saturday trip once we are home and fed.

Good friend lives just out side Maupin (and works for one of the local fly shops) says the 'run' this year is the best in several.

Too bad "gas" is $3.00++ per gallon. ARRRGGGGG!!!

Jake, the Veteran's Day Tilla is in Idaho on the Snake and Clearwater. Check the Idaho board for details.

Just got off the Lower D. Fished it below the falls about 2 miles, worked our way up and fished a little above the falls. We caught a grand total of NOTHIN. Should have started above and worked our way higher. Threw everything I had at'm but I dont think they were there. Oh well. Word is that there are lots of fish out at south junct. Probably wont make it out there anytime soon. Shooting for Warmsprings in a bout 3 weeks I guess.

Maybe I can talk my in-laws into comming out to the Tilla. Are there many who bank it or do most figure out a seat in a boat? How does it work. I'll check in on the board.

Thanks all.

Jake

Jake,
The guys with boats generally take those without. It is pretty informal, with a lot of "brokering open seats" happening around the campfire over an adult beverage or two...

Flows look good on the Lower D. Anyone fished it in the past couple weeks? I'm trying to get out this week, maybe Friday. Thanks.

SFC, I heard the same about the lower reaches there. Slower, but better chances at a B run bruiser. I'm still a numbers guy... size is still a bonus, lol. Talked to a guy who fished So. junct. on tuesday - saw 3 fish caught but none on his line. The fish are in warmsprings I'm betting. I'll report if I get out there.

Fished the top of the Lower D yesterday (Saturday). Heard there were lots of fish in there. Very blustery and rainy. A friend caught a little 24 inch keeper and I went home with the skunk again. Bummer. We figure the total day's hiking adds up to over 10 miles. Lots of work for no fish. Didnt see anyone else with a fish, and noone we talked to had caught anything. I caught a couple bows and a sucker on the fly rod, but thats all.

dark stonefly patterns mainly, CJ on a tough steelhead hook, your typical streamers in black, blue, purple.
