Its one of my favorite rivers to fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cant even explain how good of steelhead fishing I had there last year. Ten to the bank in about three hours (out of one hole) of fishingand that was just me not including other people with me! From what I heard last year the fly fishing guys were getting lots of natives through out Feburary and We were catching almost all hatchery fish in March. Anywere from grants pass up to the dam can be good. My uncle has a friend who has property on one of the best holes Iv ever fished so Im a little luck, but If you put in the work you will find many fish. There are a lot of good spots right off the road too. I used roe and jigs when I fished it. Hope this helps

I was using black and pink jigs. Above new hope is good and also from applegate up to the dam is good. Anywhere on this river can be deadly if the flow and conditions are right!

And there's the rub. Access (public) is very limited on the Applegate and the folks who do fish it are 'jammed' into very short sections of the river.
Bummer.

Roger that, opens January 1st. Best flow for fly fishing is under 800 cfs ... which is well above where it's at now.
There is/are at least one USGS gauges on the river (ones in Wilderville if memory serves) so you can get 'real time' data.

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/RR/southwest/ Current 'stuff' from the State.
There are the obvious access/park out of Jacksonville, down on 'fish hatchery road' (think that's correct) on the lower river and my 'fav' is by the fenced in tree farm.

It's on/off highway 238. Wish I could get more specific but the LARGE fenced area is between the main road and the river (walk down the fence line to access the river. I'll see if I can better fix for you.

Shxt and crap. Over in Brookings again for another month. BUT did (local tackle shop) find the map book that has the Applegate access, etc., and no way to pick the damned thing out.
That said, when you see 'it'(the tree farm surrounded by the high chain link fence) you can't miss it. Depending on water flow (chest wader time) you can access the better part of a mile of river from one side or the other.
Higher water will limit the amount you can fish (unless you're into swimming), but still outstanding fly water.

Saw a few guys fishing the day I was out there. Maybe I got lucky, but I would like to think that Im getting better at hooking steel! You know how steelhead fishing is, once you think your starting to figure it out you get humbled real quick! I would throw bobber and eggs or jigs if I were you guys. Some guys say that they have been hooking fish on the rogue for a month or more so there are fish in the applegate its just fishing the water before other do. I just kept moving and hitting the nice water and It paid off after about 45min. I wish I had fished the whole day there, I started on the rogue around GP and worked my way down river. I had one hard hit but no hookups plus the river was off color. Soon as I got to the applegate the water was clear and looking like it should hold some fish! Ill be back end of the month or late feburary to try again.

Memories.......Caught my first trout (first fish)on that river. My dad worked for the USFS, and we lived at the Applegate Ranger Station. Moved to Seattle when I was in the third grade, 1953. Went to school at the old Rusche School. Is it still there??? The old ranger station (I think it's a historical place now) was on the opposite side of the road from the river, (the new one is on the river side of the road), and we lived up the hill from there in old housing that is now gone. Beautiful place!!!!

Anyone been out on the lower applegate lately? I will be back in GP in two weeks and will be hitting it hard for a few days. Are there any other good areas to go from the bank other than the obvious spots below the 199 bridge? I dont mind doing a little hiking to get to good water. I know nobody will give any of their secret spots away but maybe some areas that arent fished as hard. Thanks

Well Im sure everyone and their mom will be out there by the time I get there! Oh well, one of my favorite rivers to fish anyway. Maybe I can get my dad into his first steelhead, he doesnt fish much but he used to. Plus my grandpa will probably be showing me how its done out there. There will hopefully be more fish in the system than there was the last time I fished it on January 2. I got one nice native though so hopefully it will be even better.

Went out today and hooked one fish. It tied me up on a branch or something so I ended up loosing it. It felt like a good fish, this is the first time I have lost a steelhead because of a snag in the water, how frustrating. Oh well, other than that I had one bobber down in the lower river followed quickly by a brain fart (the one time you look away for a second). So I didnt hook that one. I saw quit a few people out but no one with fish so its still a little slow.
