Lower Hood Canal Nooks
      #126479 - 08/01/04 06:36 PM

Looks like there's some nooks up around Lilliwaup and Eagle Creek. Saw one landed yesterday morning at Liliwaup in the 15 minutes I was watching. Time to drag the Gooose Egg Charters down south next weekend.

Fished it from 6 a.m. till noon today. My buddy may have had one hit from a king while jigging at Lilliwaup but not sure it did bury the rod though. Saw no fish caught but marked a lot of fish (some of which were probably jelly fish.) I have heard of a few being caught there though. I know a guy that picked up a 23 lber and 19 lber two days ago.

Real nice fish. I was out mid day today with no success I heard most of the fish were caught real early in the morning. Did you pick that up at Ayok or Lilliwaup. Will be there in the a.m. Look for the crazy guy in a float tube jigging off Lilliwaup point just below the turnout. Nice looking rod by the way.

MetalheadRon,

That fish was hooked up towards Ayock, I have picked up a couple around Lilliwaup also. I saw a crazy guy in a float tube off Lilliwaup the other night

It was a real Zoo out there Sunday, I managed to cracker off a couple before the bite died.

Nets are in Tuesdays and Thursdays so plan your trips around those days. Got some reports of some awesomely large fish concentrations up around Ayock Point!

Well I had the opportunity to take of couple of the girls tonight. We got a late start, detoured around the paving project, and managed to hit the water around 6:00.

I figured a couple of hours might give us time to get the girls into some fish.

Ashley and Ashley are both 12 year olds, always having a pretty short attention span when in the boat.

As luck would have it, I won first up position after a round of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Ashley was second, and Ashley was third (confused yet?)

I got things started with a nice bright Silver, now we have thier attention.

No to long after, fish-on, Ashley grabs the rod and the battle ensues, after a lengthy struggle, and several trips back and forth around the boat, it was nothing but net, approx 18-20lb King.

Well now Ashley was beginning to feel like she was going to get left out, but about 15 minutes later, fish-on, another mighty battle ensued, and shortly, nothing but net.

Both Ashleys got thier first Kings tonight, and got initiated with the slimy secret handshake.

Pardon the photographer, she is still in training.

Lower Canal equals south of Ayock Point wich is the boundary line. Most of the pressure has been right up by the point although the fish are moving south so anywhere from about Hoodsport north to the point should produce fish.

The launch is at Cushman Park / The Powerhouse just north of Potlach on HWY 101.

It is mostly a trolling and jigging show, but I have honestly not seen anyone mooching, so I can't say if it would work or not.

Suggestions on depths to hit, contour lines? Do I look for the 100ft line, 200 ft line and how close to the bottom do you go? I can troll trash with the best of them, so I'll bring my favorite flashers and hootchies, along with a selection of Coyote spoons. Looking at heading out Saturday am with the fam damily. PM me if you feel the need.

Thanks in advance!

Was out there this am with my wife. Focused on Lilli area. Was really pissed off when I went to use one of the downriggers and discovered the handle was gone. Dont' know if it was stolen or what. Our spirits were uplifited when I landed a small steelhead. Could not believe it. Ended up landing two others between 2 to 3lbs. These were not cutties, kings, coho, pink, or chum for sure. Had all fins, great looking fish. My wife ended up landing a keeper king and the largest fish came off after about one minute. My wife was very disapointed. We saw the fish jump a few times and it had to be in the 10 to 15lb range. Were trolling flatfish on the surface in 15 to 30'. Didn't seem to matter which was were trolled. We could see the boats up at Ayok.

I just visited my local Eastside PSA meeting. Fish4Fun suggested 60-75 ft for Kings in Elliot Bay for migratory Kings. I picked up two Saturday, CnR at Possession at 45. Quillback picked one up at 70. I think that means 45-75 with 60 really close to the sweet spot. Those depths were irrespective of the water depth. We've been picking up fish from 70 to 160 ft of water in three different areas. Seems close enough to good to me.

We had 4 releases, along with one fish hitting a rising flasher on a gear check in 4 hours of fishing. Not quite to Sekiu standards, but I had time to clean the boat, mow the lawn, and play with the kids today, so it was worth the time spent, and only a half hour away from home.

Ended up helping my 8 year old bring in a nice 5lb silver. Now I just have to convert more of those releases to completions.

Fished Ayock to Eagle Creek, 5:30-9:30am. Saw a few fish caught.

Thanks for the idea, gonna hit it again tomorrow.

The majority of the kings have not arrived yet (I hope) and I really don't know why the silvers are showing so well so early. If it is anything like last year we will have a couple more weeks more of king fishing and it should get better and better.

Metalheadron:

Was out there this am and saw a float tube. Could that have been you. We were headed back to the ramp around 9:30am. It looked like you were jigging. What has been working for you? We got skunked today. Had a good take down. We did pretty good the last week but nothing for us the last couple times. We have seen a few fish caught.

We will be back out sometime this week.

Yep, that was me. The 18 lber towed me around a little bit lol. It is fun but it is also a lot of work to land a fish like that in a float tube without a net. It took me five tries before I could tail it and pull it up into my lap. Patience is definately necessary. If you see me out there again stop and say howdy. I would very much like to meet other board members. Jigs have worked for me but when I am in a boat it is a green glow hot spot flasher with about 33 inches of leader followed by a wonderbread coyote spoon anywhere from 30 to 60 feet down. Hope this helps.
