Road Trip
      #129290 - 08/16/04 03:21 PM

I am making a trip North the weekend of Laborday and thru the tilla at CQ. I would like to target some Nooks while I am in the area and am not sure what options I have. I know that I can go to Neah Bay and fish them outside but not sure that is the best option. Some of the options that I am looking at are.. in no particular order Lower Hood Canal, Grays Harbour , Willapa Bay, Bouy 10.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated by myself and family(Ms DD, Sassafrakitty , her 4 fishermen and sister and who knows who else will stowaway).

I do plan a few days at Neah Bay for Coho and Bottomfish/Lings along with some bucktailing attempts but figure I can find time to try for some bigger fish as well.

Thanks to all

I have been staying at Snow Creek and fishing past the Bonilla - Tatoosh line. We have been doing pretty well. The FOG has been problematic. GPS is an absolute must. It is a total coho rodeo with 20 - 30 or more! per day!

Ling Cod and Sea Bass are plentiful as well.

Check this out http://www.snowcreekwa.com/

I fished this past sat and sun on the 200 ft "bread line" starting 4 miles south of toosh isl. down to Umitilla nad we limited on nooks and coho each day. When you find them on that 200 ft line just stay on em and you'll have a busy day. They have been moving all up and down between the top of Makaw bay and Umatilla, so locating them has been the challenge each day, however when we foun em it was quite a party. we aver. 50+ fish to the boat each day. No huge nooks(15-20lbs) but the coho on top were a blast some reaching the 15-18lb class and about a 50/50 split nates to hatch. We finished off each day close to shre in the rocks plinging lings and bass. Hope ya have a good trip. As stated above good GPS and Radar is a must out there.

Sounds promising. will they still be there in 3 weeks? I wish I was making the run this week but... Sounds like URB's might be a option also . Some have astrong interest in rocks and lings so makes it all the more challenging decision wise anyway.

Keep an eye on WDFW for an announcement regarding the Area 4 Quota. No news is good news.

Cachute;
What are you using? How deep?

I hope to make it out there Friday AM and maybe Saturday too.

Calm Seas and Unlimited Visibility. I am using that as a Mantra.

I have a custom radar setup. I stand on my tip toes, put my hand to my brow and do a 360.

Hope to do some bottom fishing around Snow Creek, Seal Rock and the environs close by. We did the Coho Rodeo strait out from there, but I wanna catch a HOG! (in the FOG) watta bout you DOG?

LaPush is a good place to target Nooks & Coho, and there are plenty of lings & rockfish too. All are generally pretty close.

We used an assortment of terminal gear, and it really didnt seem to matter. I like using green spatters with a green and chrome flasher and a herring strip on the top hook. Also Funky chicken and Clark Kent Coyotes worked well as did Silver Hordes on the green and blue and Pearl White. We run a topwater always as our 4th rod for Coho with either army truck apex or a Brads wobler in chrome and blue or Chartruce and chrome. Man when they hit its like a bomb going off. Thats really the only Rod i target Coho with and we usually get quite a few that way. If its sunny I'll increase my weight from 2oz to 4-6oz to get the lure down further or if I see the majority of Coho at 30 ft or deeper. The other 3 rods I run are on riggers set usually from 90ft to 225ft(or whtever bottom is). Most of my nooks this year have come at over 110ft deep. Occasionally we do get one on the topwater rig and thats usually when we are runnin next to a bait ball. When that happen and the currents light I will usually stop trolling and start vertically jigging single dips or mooch if I have good bait. It's been great at the doc's in Neah this year cause there has been a gazillion chovies everywhere so fresh bait has been easy using a little herring line to fill a bucket in a 1/2 hr or so. Hope ya do well. The weather looks wet and the seas a little swolen for this weekend(6ft sells 7 sec.) but the breeze looks pretty managable(10-15), and if it's too ugly we've been absolutely raping and pillaging the LARGE coho off the Garbage dump and duntz and duncan for the past month. See ya

Thanks for the detailed info. I am sure it will help. Looking forward to lots of fun with the Grandsons etc. They have never caught a big fish and will be fresh home from summer with Dad so will be good way to welcom them home. We will see if any Nooks are still around in sept then too and if not may go south mid week for some exploring.

A friend of mine who lives in Longview raves about the URB fishing in the waters there, at that time. Dave works at the mill there and said he was catching them in large numbers and size last fall trolling right off the retainer wall fronting the mill.

Also, IBGRIZZ [from up near Spokane] stated somewhere under the Idaho Reports that he "parks" his boat down in the Longview area at that time and trys to get down that way as often as possible for those big fish - you might want to shoot him a pm for some particulars. As I understand, Southfork and his wife will be out with Grizz on Thursday, before continuing on up to the Sekiu tilla.

I'd love to hit that area, but I'm blowing the remainder of my vacation time on the Sekiu tilla with Team Moose Drool, so will have to pass on the URB's.

FYI Sept has typically been a good time for Large nooks off Table Top/Limp Dick in Neah. It's 8 or so miles straight out from Toosh. We got a 50 lber there the 3rd week of Sept last year, it was the derby winner that weekend and was publised in the last episode of Fishing Hunting News. I heard through the grapevine that a lot of the Sacramento and Columbia fall run are just a week ago starting to trickle down from our BC bros. "Theyre Late" is the report I got from my friends on the Cowlitz and Sac rivers, so I would tend to believe that we shoul see some lare #'s of large fish pushing by neah and LaPush soon, but I'm an optomist.

The Sac fish are indeed late as indicated by the fish counts at redding Ca. All the better from my point of view. I would be happy with a couple of 30's in the boat. Now if the weather will just cooperate. Thanks for the great info .

IBgrizz We are going to fish URB's out of Longview Tuesday Wdenday and Thursday next week. I'll give you a shout.

How tough is it to fish out of LaPush. Would like to chase the kings in the salt.

Any current reports from Sekiu... being as they closed area 4 for Salmon I am going to fish Sekiu this coming weekend with my family. Really want to get the son-in-law hooked on fishin.

I spent 17 summers commercial Trolling There with my granddad. The big trouble there is FOG.
this time of year you should beable to get some nice kings around the skunk bouy or down by the needles

I will make a few calls see what the fishing reports are.

See ya on the big C next week

Dog;
I am gonna be out there this weekend. Either La Push if I get the cajones or Sekiu if not. I have a couple of buddies who did OK at the rockpile this weekend. I am hoping to hook up and follow them out so I can get there waypoints.

Will you be monitoring 68?

If you go through P.A. make sure to hit Swains for Herring. It is only $2.68 a dozen regardless of size. (and you know size matters!)

I hope to be on the water Dawn Saturday.
