Area 6 Halibut Report 4/16/05
      #182084 - 04/17/05 12:17 AM

Quillback and I met up with CastawayChris to fish for in my boat. It was a little rough earlier in the day (we launched about 3 pm), but by the end of the day, it was near glass. All I got for my trouble was two fishing rods although one isn't finished, so I think I'll throw them back.

I'll try to get some pictures posted of scenery later today.

We spoke with a couple of people who picked up a few near PA. We fished close to Sequim.

I'm not sure but this view may have been worth the drive. No wildlife. BigNate, can you guarantee this type of calm water.

This one maybe not.

I talked with two guys at John Wayne this afternoon when we were pulling the boat (no, we didn't go fishing, we went to Tacoma for the Daffodil Marine Regatta), and they had an 80 and a smaller one. They hadn't been fishing that far out either. I'm thinking Wednesday will be the day. I was going to see if Chris wants to go, but.....

Hmmmm that looks a bit inshore from the spot I would have gone Chris? Was that out on the Lump? Or back towards Sequim bay as it looks from that view of Protection Island? I've got the 30th and 1st off if anyone wants a butt whore to go along with them? I'll bring octopus bait and B2 triple glow squids.

The dip in the rock pile would have produced. I SO wanted to see what a boot halibut looks like too Chris! I've never seen one before.

Gooose, at that point, we may have been farther in, but we fished as far out as 9 and 10 miles NE from Sequim Bay, by GPS/Chart.

keep moving west you will find them... even with Chris. The straits tend to be windy in the afternoon calming back down as it cools off to evening. Many a morning I have got up early to see to much wind. Its a treat to be on glass .. nice pics

The spot I'm talking about isn't part of Dallas Banks. On a chart you'll see a deeptrough between the Banks and this lump.

Jim I'll work on those for you. I've always used the ancient mariner method for navigation.....keep forgetting about the gps. I haven't gotten lost yet or run aground but I did scare the crap out of a freighter.

Thanks for the reminder Chris....I better start getting the gear ready now.

I'm just heading out the door now. Going to fish some spots close to Sequim Bay, before heading on down to Winslow for the weekend. I will post results, if I can get Wireless in Winslow.

Yes it was a nice day to be out and Keysrob and coasty buddy mark were awsome guys to fish with!!! PA was a freakin zoo, bout 100 trailers i the lot!!! Anyways, we concentrated on a hunny hole about 2 miles west of Freshwater, pounded it hard all day long, tried two different types of bait, different depths and every scent in the book, with no luck!!! 3 other boats in the spot, all friends of mine, includin the 3 Rainshadow boys lol, all with no fish either,!!! Headed for the ramp at 3, wind came up and the white caps were on, lil bouncy on the way back! When we got to the ramp there were 18 fish counted for 80+ boats checked in, not very good by any means, we only heard one shot on the water and we saw one fish that was 59 inches and 100+ lbs and the ramp, but still early in the season, have plenty of time to fill the freezer! All in all, it was a fun day and was glad to be fishin with keysrob and friend mark, hope to do it again someday!!!

I tried to post on Sat, but Broadband Express was too flakey to stay up long enough for the posts to go through.
Anyway, we fished flat calm water on Thursday, east of Dungeness light. No Butts, just Dogs. Talked to a couple of guys out there that had no fish either. Heard one shot.
Talked to a couple of boats at John Wayne when we got in today, and they had no fish either. Patience, Grasshopper,... Patience

As Chris said, we got skunked. Chris ran us West to a hot spot that he thought would put out a fish. Within 30 minutes of arriving we heard a shot as a boat about 1/4 mile away had boated a fish (we think... it may have been the boat owner shooting the local for not putting them on fish.) We tried squid, herring, octopus and juiced them with all kinds and combinations of stink but it wasn't in the cards for us to catch fish. I do have to say I enjoyed fishing with my new rod and reel... much less effort than my last skunk trip two years ago.
Chris is a pretty good guy and fun to fish with. Sometimes he speaks and you think he's older than he is and then he does something and it's evident that he's only 20. We look forward to fishing with you again, Chris if you can get time off from your new job at the glass company.
On Sunday my daughter and I ran the boat on Lake Goodwin to flush the motors with fresh water. We fished for about two hours and picked up a few trout including a 14" rainbow and a 13" cutthroat. So all in all, not a bad weekend.

And per Marty's request... I'll take the high road on this one.
