Looking for advice on what would be a good rod for vertical jigging bottomfish (ling cod, cabezon, etc.). The best quality/price combo, don't need anything super fancy, but don't want junk either. Probably won't use it for halibut.

Luke,
I like my Lamiglas Kenai King. I also have a Wright McGill Heavy Back Bouncer that would be the bomb for big bottomfish. Fisherman's Marine has them on sale for something like 4 bucks over cost. Well they were on sale last weekend anyway.
For a cheap rod, Okuma Celilo baitcaster in the med/heavy.

Thanks Joe, I'll give 'em a look see. Going up the first weekend in May to Neah Bay with my cousin, uncle and some other outlaw misfits for a whiskey tournament...uh, I mean a bottom fish slaying.

Luke, the rod I was using at Sekiu last time was the Lamigals Kenai King. Next bottomfishing trip it'll be the hevier Wright McGill.

Cool, I'll look into them. I like a lighter weight spinning rod set up for the sea-bass and the smaller rock fish. But when it comes to putting the screws to ling and cabezon, it's nice to have some back-bone to lay the wood to 'em and get 'em off the rocks.

Step up and go with the Kenai Killer and some 50-80lb power pro! Never know what u can hook up with bottom fishing, i don't know about u luke, but around here, we see some BIG LINGERS and i wouldn't want to lose one on some lil puni Kenai King or Okuma, i wanna put the wood to him and stop those big bruisers!

Hmmmmm does Lami still make the Puget Jigger rod? Luke if you are fishing depths less than 200 feet and darts your basic medium-heavy to heavy salmon rod will do just fine. Allstar 1025C, Curado 201 loaded with 30 pound fireline and a 6 ounce chrome and green Dungeness Stinger handled a 39 inch ling just fine for me in 100 feet of water.  That or similar is all I ever needed in Hood Canal or out at Neah Bay. The only time you will actually need a meatstick like a Kenai is if you are using heavier gear and deeper water or you have to fight the Ling out of the rocks. Sorry guys but they really do not put up much of a fight after their initial 30 seconds....you might get a few rushes back down while steadily cranking them up but thats about it.

have to agree with gooose.. medium heavy stick with enough rating to handle 4 oz lead which is alot and bordering to much in most straits jigging in the shallow areas. Breaking 80lb test... no thanks. I would go with the lighter line in case you do get hung 30lb. I fish 20 mono on my steelhead med heavy steelhead rods with 2oz jigs and have no issues with the fishies. heavier is overkill unless your chasing butts or deep water where you need the big leads.

The Kenai King is heavy enough to lift a 70 pound ling. I run 80 pound braid on mine. Gooose, yes the Puget Jigger is still in production, and would work fine.
Given my druthers, I'd still go with the Wright McGill Heavy Backbouncer. It has great tip sensitivity, and you could easily reel up a VW bug with it. I put a Penn 220 GTO on mine with 80 pound braid. It is less expensive than the Lamiglas by about 50 bucks, and it better built IMO.
I had no problem with lures breaking off using the heavy line. Switching out the trebles for siwash allowed me to pull loose most snags. Switching to the Gammy 510 assist hooks (on the little lanyard), attached to the top eye on the dart, reduced snags drastically and kept me fishing more.

Thanks for the info, guys. Won't be fishing more than 100 feet most likely, and I agree with Marty on using lighter line. I get hung up alot fishing darts and jigs, it's nice to be able to bust it off fairly easily. The lure itself usually protects the line from teeth shredding once you have one hooked.

Well, i like bait, green lingers for big lingers so i'll fish the bigger rod!!! But i do find myself using using just my salmon rod with a jig a lot of the time, but i like my scampi jigs!!! I've seen 2 5 to 6 footers hooked at Neah with 50lb braid on an XMB944 in one drift and even strait roddin wouldn't get that somebiatch from bulldoggin its way to the kelp, more power for me, i'm not afraid to bust 80lb. lose gear!!!

I've seen some big bastards up at Neah hooked on green ling as well, they usually don't fight too hard if they don't have hooks in their mouth. Although they will take off like a bat outta hell when ripped with a treble or two. I hate braided line, just my personal opinion. If I lose some bigguns because they break my line/pole or run into the rocks/kelp, I will probably change to something heavier.

NO margin for error during harvest time, as Tbird would say, "GO BIG OR GO HOME" lol, no pun intended!!!! Ok, for the lighter side a SA1026 or one of the line of Musky Blanks that rainshadow has, the DR line of Rods works great too!!!

Chris you have seen a 5 to near 6 foot ling at Neah Bay and apparently in the nearshore according to your post? Sorry but I have to call bullshit on that happening. It may occasionally be the pleasure of any fisher to hook up with a ling beyond 36 inches in our states waters but a 5 to 6 footer is near unlikely and more the generation of beer than reality. The typical ling is just gonnas be over legal size. My 39 incher btw only weighed 28 pounds. Sorry but your guru ling bs is just that....bs.

Luke I also use hooks that aren't unbendable, if you hook up with a kelp you can bend it to get the jig back. Its only bottom fish anyway... lots of nice lings are caught by leaving your little ones down for a second for the "extra" bite. Keep the net handy

Good advice Marty...I build my own from the Dart bodies I get at Swains just add a split ring and a light wire treble. When you're really in to the green lings always keep an eye out for a 5 to 6 foot long brown shape circling just below the green lings as you get them to the surface. Just hestitate on the retrieve and the Big Ling will usually grab the green ling.

Hmmmmm so Chris what kelp was it you were seeing these fish burrow through out at PA? The RockPile maybe? Hmmmm what kelp? Sorry but kelp requires sunlight and you won't find any kelp beds in 180 feet of water. Hey I'll help you out with your BS...maybe the PA fleet of bottomfish experts all fish bottomfish out past Freshwater Bay? Hmmmm there will be some big brooder hens inshore in the winter laying eggs in the winter from there out west but it would be a rare instance to to find one of those near the KELP in the spring. You sure will find smaller fish throughout that shoreline and if one puts in the the time, effort and research they will pick up lings that will exceed the 40 inch range. Sorry but 60 to 72 inch fish being more than an extreme rarity near PA is a figment of alcohol, cannabis or other drugs or combination thereof and/or just someones BS.
