Finally got to meet Mr. Evans
      #100794 - 02/15/04 12:40 PM

Went to the Spey Clave yesterday on the Skykomish. Which, for those of you who didn't, or couldn't, go it was an excellent event. Lot of big name spey casters there that really put out alot of info. Highlights were Simon Gawsworth and George Cook. They put out a lot of info in terms we all could understand. Plus, besides telling you what you SHOULD do, they told/showed you how you possibly could be doing stuff wrong. Saw plenty of techniques that I was doing wrong by matching up to how their casts looked. Was an eye opener and stuff I haven't found on any videos. Great event.

Onto Fred. Finally got to meet Fred. This gentleman (and mean that literally) is as warm hearted in person as he is on the net. Was nice to meet a dear friend I've corresponded with for years. Plus, he's one helluva spey caster as well. After a great day at the clinic we (with 2 other friends from another board), we all sat down over nice smooth Macmallan scotch and BS'd for a couple hours. Was a great time. Wish I could've went to the get together after the event, but had Valentine's duties.

Fred, when you get home, know you're still up on the Sky, but may take you up on the offer for the Spey Clinic you put on. Would love to hang out if anything again.

Yeah... though I never met him, I can tell he is a true "gentleman" with a heart of gold, and a fantastic sense of humor. And, from the sound of it, his lovely wife is a jewel, too!

Thanks for the report, Jerry. Even though I can't be out there, maybe someday I can con the "war department" into a trip west. It might just change her mind about where to live....

P.S. So far this winter, we officially have 103 inches of snow. whoopee...

Cool, let me know if you make it here Bob. Have a seat open for you in my boat.

Yeah, Joan couldn't make it. Wanted to meet her. But hopefully really soon though.

"Fred, when you get home, know you're still up on the Sky, but may take you up on the offer for the Spey Clinic you put on. Would love to hang out if anything again."

The 'round trip' was (true) 5 miles short of 1,000 miles in the new RV. Trip up, other than light rain was 'no big deal.' Going home! Much of it, for you boaters, was small craft warnings, to whole gale. 11 hours to do 500 miles in driving rain/wind .. and some of it sweat under the arm pits driving.

But, me .. hell I'm just another Canadian. Jerry as well as others who've I've corresponded with for years and FINALLY got to meet.... truely great, wonderful folk.

Jerry, if you want to do this/next years Charity clinic, you're 'compted.' Which means you help me with the on river details .. a few buck to cover your food .. and the rest is 'on me.'

We all get to meet great people (some times/this time FINALLY!!) we're blessed to meet. 2 Seconds flat and we're in huge hugs.

BS aside, you all have a treat in store when you really get to meet Jerry in person; what you 'read, is what you've got.' Jerry (above being beside the point, but true) anytime you want to come south, the bed has freah sheets, the pillows are fluffy ...

HUGS!!!!
Fred

Fred, you are truly a gentleman. Only in fishing do we meet people like you.

BTW, you've got to realize that with that big-arsed flat side to the wind, that RV is a "small craft" at a minimum!
Take care of yourself!

Yeah, Jerry - same color I use back east. Nice neutral color that is a form of Camo, especially when you've got evergreens as background.

(If Hal doesn't weart a green rain jacket, then he must be buying one of those "cheap, made in Cambodia" imitations! - It figures....)

LOL Fred. Well, as I told guys there that day (I was ONLY one in shorts) I'm one of those crazy UPS drivers. I wear shorts all year. I don't have ONE pair of long pants issued to me. Even in snowstorms, I wear shorts. Just a little longer socks and my heavier boots. LOL. My trunk usually is only thing to get cold. My arms, legs, head usually stay toasty warm all year. Summer, when it's hot, I suffer BADLY.

Mines a nice spruce blue just for the record, blends in with the backgrounds nice like the sky and gray clouds etc.

Pouring rain fred well thats life in the PNW from what my internet friends, family members who lived in Seattle for 12 years tell me. Bet you have more cloudy days there then we do here in Chicago. But If I was a 100 miles to the east onthe west side of lake michigan the cloudy days probably double. I know I lived over there for 6 years in South Bend big difference due to the way the winds come out of the NW over lake Michigan.

Nice picture though fellows.

Maybe some day we will all meet up togehter in one big flyfishing internet clave. I have lots of frequent flyer miles to use yet just need the open time.

I just noticed the change from the Wynooche Dark Spey. I have mine put away in my boxes secured.

I may have some of Willie Gunns single malt, BTW, I am all out of that now !

At the risk of sounding like a 'village idiot,' if it's the new [Re: Marty]
      #102823 - 02/29/04 05:51 PM

rod 'noted as' the "FES" probably the best low water summer/fall spey rod ever built. Old story on how the rod got it's 'designation' so I'll spare you.

Simply put, Bob Meiser builds the best spey rods going regardless of price.... and he's far less expensive. His rods (prior to intro to the public) are 'beat to heck' in real life fishing conditions .. not just casting. The two are very, very different situations.

Miez' build 'fishing tools.' Nuff, said.

Yup, want to get one Fred. Those were BEAUTIFUL rods. I was drooling. Then watching you and a few others use them were great. Heard nothing but good things about them. So, looks like I'll have one or two of Bob's rods someday soon (I hope).

YUP! All you have to do is call, leave a credit card number as a security deposit, and he will send you the model you are interested in to try to your heart's content!

(But Hal's too "economically prudent" [cheap] for even that!) What excuse will he come up with NOW???

I cannot evaluate what I cannot touch and feel and thats the bottom line when it comes to almost anything.

"Touch me, feel me, hold me" etc.. any one know what group sang that song ?

But you CAN touch and feel it... or at least there is a process to allow that.

I'm not going to touch the lyrical references...

I TOLD you that Hal is super-cheap! Hell, all he does is talk about fishing. And probably fishes with a Snoopy Rod that he stole from some little kid!

Yeah Hal, they are VERY nice rods. Call Bob and have him send you one.

BTW, it's the Who that sang that song.

LOL Bob. Ok, ok, ok, I got it.

But sure was damned nice meeting Fred. Especially meeting that fine bottle of scotch too. Plus meeting H2H, and a few others (and found out I was STANDING next to a few others and didn't know it).

No I haven't Fred. I just need to know when he's planning to shoot over this way. I can arrange something. If not, we can do the "your trip his trip". But, you always have an open seat in my boat. Hoping to be able to row here in another 2 months or so (HOPEFULLY!!!).

Ok Ok I'm trying but the number of internet friends I've made it will have to be a long trip. How can I load a case of whisky in a suitcase + fishing tackle and spare socks.

Don't worry about the spare socks and fishing tackle. Between Fred and I you're covered. Just bring the whisky.

Hey Malcolm when you fly over the GLs heading west like most other fly fisherman think of me spey fly fishing in solitude, no daily fishing fee, lots of public water and lots of bright chrome fish less than 50 miles from the big lakes.

Consider stopping by for a GLs blue ribbon tour of several of our spey rivers.

Actually, bring the socks; at the current exchange rates you'd be money ahead buying the 'booze' over here. Per one of your posts on the UK board it appears you folks get 'hammered' on taxes!

Rods we've got ... and I know how to 'pick the lock' on Meiser's home in Medford. Thank goodness he doesn't keep too good a score on 'current inventory.'

Everything is expensive over there and I am heading to Deutsche land first week of May it appears. The prices of the US fly fishing tackle when I was in Europe last were out of sight. No wonder they love Ebay sales. LOL

I will not be buying anything there other than German Biers - Swi beers I say in the Hofbrauhaus of Frankfurt am Main. Yes I know its streets and other dark areas well from my 7 month USAF tour at Rhein Main AFB a few mile from the Kaiserstraffe of Frankfurt, aah what memories of young american soldier in a far off land.

LOL

AAaaah! Schnapps sehr gut gesmecht!
But WHAT does THAT have to do with Malcolm visiting Fred and Jerry here in the 'states? And wanting to do some FISHING!! (And sippin', too!)

Let's get back to the topic, which is Malcolm visiting Fred and Jerry in the 'states!!! And Hal, quit trying to impress us with your trip to Germany! BFD. Tell us the part about how easy it is to catch a steelhead on Kaiserstrasse, or get a rare piece of meat served!!! (Hint - You can't make one yourself in Europe! - Must be "something in the water!!!") Hell, I'm going to a blue ribbon stream in the Rockies in less than three months - and I'll take a fishing and camping trip with buddies over a business trip to ANYWHERE any day! (And I don't bring it up every two minutes, either!) Let's GET BACK ON TRACK!

Well than Bobk start a thread on your trip to the Green River, I will be very interested in that.

BTW, the meat in Europe still is terrible, I stopped ordering it since I believe beyond a reasonable doubt I was served horse meat in Amsterdam. Two bites and my friend could not eat any more and we were hungry so we just drank some more biers ! LOL

Hey Fred and Jerry we have to get BOBK over on the UK fly fishing forumn those chaps would love to comment on Bopk's critiques. LOL

I gotta go back to real work now I am laughing too much.

Oh, that was your problem there. You were eating in Amsterdam. You know that salad you ordered was probably full of marijuana leaves. LOL

When I was living there as an exchange student, I actually had very good food in Germany, France, and throughout most of Europe. Even when I was touring then eastern block Europe (before the wall came down) food wasn't too bad either. But, when I was up in the Netherland area, I was a bit dismayed on everything there. I prefered to visit, but eat at McDonalds (Still loved being able to buy beer at McD's lol).

Onto thread at hand. Gonna be getting the driftboat ready. I'm hoping to do a rowing trip to check out the shoulder in the upcoming weeks. See how it feels (been doing my own therapy since my L&I company won't). Hope to be in full swing by time they get here. Will take LOTS of pics on the trip. Hopefully we'll hit a herd of Roosevelt Elk up in the National Park. They'll bed down by the riverside. Big bull runs the herd. Gorgeous site. Then, below Willoughby on the Hoh, we'll run into an awesome chance to see bald eagles. Don't think I've had a trip yet I haven't seen them (except when the cloud layer was down around the trees). Will even supplie the flies.

Yes I advised every one that the down side of going to these spey claves is that you then resurrect your surpressed sublimal expensive spey fly equipment purchasing "wants" for $100 lines, $400+ rods, $ 400+ reels etc....

Be strong (and economically prudent) like me. I will be out of the country for the one GLs country near me this year thank god.

Good luck to all that attend one this year and explaining the "spey wants" to the little women in your life.

Notice I did not say "spey needs" there is a big difernece fron the "spey wants".
