skagit line Recipe?
      #157155 - 12/22/04 08:56 PM

Anyone have the recipe for the Skagit Line Recipe for the two handed rod?

I was thinking it was just a 50-55' of belly (DT line) section 2 lines up from your recommended rod weight. that was then followed by 15' sink tips.

All this attached to a quick running line like the Cortland cobra line running line.

Anyone know for sure what the recipe calls for?

Thanks

Brian (Homer3handed) should have that for you. He's a master line maker. Well, at least the ones I've used were pretty damned good.

My “Skagit Lines” are 3 times the length of the rod, not more than 3.5 times the length of the rod.

What rod do you have?

You can E-Mail me at Homer2handed@yahoo.com

If you want to build a line for CND Custom 8/9 try this one:

22 ¾” of 10 wt.
35” of 11 wt.
124” of 13 wt.
109 ¼ ” of 12 wt.
86” of 11 wt.

31’4” Belly
Use 145 grain sink-tips

hehe, well I have the 10wt belly section, Who wants to give the 12wt, 13wt, and the 11wt. section.

We should start a line swap, List what we have and who wants to trade what for what. I'm sure we all have some lines laying around not being used.

H2H BG is doing his annual fly line and leader inventory. I counted 18 sink tip leaders I have and now it appears that to be at the cutting edge of sink tip technology I need to buy another sink tip leader/line i.e a Skagit tip or line ?

I have three leaders to repair of the 18 so I am not sure if further investments are needed in Skagit tips/lines.

Help me here fellows.

Correction, I have 19 sink tip leaders and now 4 to fix, I found another one today !!

BTW, there is no mention in The Book about Skagit casting or lines, so I suppose it is not a proven line technology yet ?

What is the MSRP on the skagit line to be marketed by Rio I suspect.

Read some more of the book last night things are getting clearer.

All these years I have been casting with un-proven line technology? Wonder how the hell I have been doing it?

By the way today I was being video taped while casting. Guy doing the taping gave me some nice comments on my casting style (Skagit style) and was amazed at how I was able to cast 90 to 100 feet with such little effort cast after cast. Couldn't have been that "not a proven line technology" I was using. Must have been the 52 year old arms and the 12 year old rod I was using.

After reading most the Spey Casting book and much technical contemplation, it appears my current set ups with the Rio WC and tips is fine for my rivers in which I do not have to cast further than 60-70 feet 90% of the time.

I believe my next spey line will be this one in the short version.

"TAPER CHARACTERISTICS:

Standard Spey long 75' head enhances long-distance .." Sounds rather long for a short head, also noted they didn't give the length of the 'long head' version of this 'short head' line.

BG, Not to talk you out of a new line but if you are interested in Skagit casting your multitip head for that Vermont rod you have will make a good substitute. In fact if you look in the Spey Clave you can find a post where Ed Ward made a reference to using a vary similar line for making Skagit head.

Mike, I have been following that post, on skagit lines, the more I read about it, the more it seems we have been using something very similar here in the GLs for 20 years heavy heads from Deep Water Express for our short, deep, fast runs. Interesting Ed Ward mentioned he was from Michigan and left in the early 80s. Maybe I met him up on the blue ribbon waters of Michigan thats when I started fishing them and ran into many of the steelhead guides etc.

I have not tried to multi tips yet, been using my home grown T-14 tips but will this year as soon as it warms up its in the single digits here for days now.

Yes I like that Vermont rod thats what it is. LOL

Skagit line Spey Abyss - OVER ! new [Re: Black_Ghost]
      #174344 - 03/07/05 08:45 AM

See cut and paste below from Fly Talk.

This is what I have been using for the last two years since Rio T-14 came out in early 2003 ! If true I have been using Skait line technique for two years. Guess I should hold on buying that new $ 75 skagit line for now. God I am actually ahead of many people it appears in the "Spey Abyss". LOL

BG

Source: From Fly Talk - Great lakes section

Quick & Dirty Skagit Line Recipe for the GLs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take one Rio Windcutter 9/10/11 floater and one package of Rio 30 ft. T-14, cut and add loops -- and voila, a crude Skagit line.

Ingrediants:

Measuring from the tip of the Windcutter, cut off 15' and throw that piece in a drawer.
Measure another 10' and cut that off.
Measure another 5' and cut that off.
Take the 30 ft' of T-14 and cut it into 5', 10' and 15' pieces.

Add the loops of your choice.

Whip differing coloured thread onto the loops so that it's easy to see which loop goes with which.

For shallow runs, match the 25' belly with the 10' floater and 5' T-14 tip. For deeper runs, use the 5' floater and the 10' T-14 and for really getting down, run the 15' T-14 right off the belly section.

To add a little spice, Rio Big Boys, Airflo Custom Tips, standard 15' tips, and Polyleaders can also be used. However, the standard recipe of T-14 and Windcutter floater should satisfy most appetites.

Bon Appetit

The "Skagit line" info above has been around for at least 4 or 5 yrs for anyone wanting to search in Spey Pages or the ISC archives.
BG the multi tip set up you have for your Vermont rod will do the same thing, so yes I would save my coin.
As to being ahead of many people in the "spey abyss" why don't you just admit that the spey abyss is rapidly filling up with free info. Will it ever be full? No, but it is not the grand Canyon anymore either.

Good one, that not even close!

Think tapers.

Tapers smapers. You don't need no stinking tapers. That 15 foot piece of lead core you hang on the end will turn her over just fine.

Hey, I might not even need a skagit line, I don't throw those huge 5-6 inch intruder and shank type flys like you PNW fellows do all winter very much out here.

I will let Mr. Evans buy the skagit line first before I drop my dime. If he gives it a nod I will think about it.

Caveat emptor in spey line and rod buying is the rule.

I can't read that image even with my reading glasses on. LOL
