What lines should I make sure I try on a new rod? I'm thinking RIO MidSpey VersiTip and RIO Windcutter Versitip in different weights. Others?
BTW, I'm just starting with spey but I do know some of the basics. The rod will be a moderately fast 13 foot rod.

Welcome to spey world, the experts will be along soon to reply, I started with a RIO Windcutter and still use it. Many beginners have started with this. What rod do you have and what does the RIO web site indicate for a line to match it ?
What type of rivers are you fishing small, medium, or large and I assume you will be dredging the bottom most of the time with sink tips.
Hint, its a lot easier to spey cast floating lines than ones with heavy sink tips. If you can start with floating lines then after mastering the basic casts go to the sink tips if you can, unlike me that started with the sink tips due to necessity (if I wanted to catch winter and spring steelhead)

I'm looking at maybe a 13 foot 8/9 made on a Batson blank. I'll mostly fish small to medium size rivers but also a lot from a boat.
The RIO site doesn't have a listing unless I missed it. There is an excellent spey shop not too far from where I live that will let you try different lines. That is why I'm wanting to know general starting points.

Jim, this post is to try to keep you from spending a butt load of bucks. Don't know where you're located, but if in the general Seattle area I WANT YOU TO GO! (clue there?) to Aaron Reimer's shop in Carnation, WA.
Aaron has just about every rod/reel/line combo you could think of. Best yet is HE WANTS YOU to get the right line for your rod. Tons of 'loaners,' talk to him and go with his advice .. and that of RIO's. Hit their web site as Simon has darned every rod and line combo (there lines only .. but why not?) in his section.
RIO, et. al. knows they're going to get your money .. but now the question for many of them is 'sell him the right thing to begin with; he/his wallet WILL be back .. if "you done him right."

Thanks Fred. The Carnation shop is where I was heading. Not everyone can be lucky, but it would be hard to beat them for spey info and to try lines!

For a 13 foot rod I would go with a Skagit Line set-up (did I surprise anyone) check out SA Spey Short heads (Al Buhr (sp) design) which you can cut and put tips on (Kaufmann’s in Bellevue has them).
Theory is 3 ½ times your rod lenght for a Skagit type line that’s why I mention the SA line. I’ve played with the Rio Skagit lines (which I have 4 of them) when they came out but I always went back to the SA lines
Not too many of my friends are using Windcutters any more; there are other lines out there that fish better and cast better. Midspey is a whole different story there design is totally different and cast a lot nicer.
I would suggest getting two lines; Mid line (like a Midspey) and a Skagit style line that way you would have a line for eastern WA fishing and a line for west side
You’ll find out that 90% of your fishing on the west side will be with tips; and that brings in a whole new chapter into the ball park.
Your right on the border line with a 13 footer about which way to go; best way to go is get the rod and take it to Aaron and the boys and try out some lines on it.
Good Luck
PS: if you do a search I put the lengths and weights of the SA lines here some where

BRIAN!! Your back. Fella's, H2H is on my VERY short list of guys who really know spey lines. In other places Brian's nick-name is: "The Sultan Of Splice" for very good reason!
CF Burkheimer 13'9" 789 or the FES 789 at 13'6"
Brian, what SA combo would you suggest for 'tossing heads' with these two rods? If you can believe, this past week up in Canada was the first time I'd actually spent a bit of time working with a 'skagit type' head. God, talk about a cub bear playing with himself.
I can tell that using this type of line this winter is going to take some major 'readjustments' to my style of casting.

Yup, several 'locals' use them year 'round and find them to be a far better 'system' for summer runs than a standard sink tip line. Fred

get the wc looped belly coil in 11/12/13 from river run, it works great as a psuedo skagit on 8 or 9 weight rods. about $60 if memory serves add some t-14 or type 6 and 8 11w rio tips and you are in pure fishing heaven

Stup, appears 'converting' a RIO acclrtr is not a real option (pooie!) so that's just exactly what I'll be trying out the two cut back windcutter options.

Belly coils? Is the 'extention' bits RIO's selling to lengthen the head of the WC's? Fred

no it is the windcutter with running line attached to the belly. it is sold without the tips.
give him a call and he will explain it better than I.
for lack of better terms its a poor mans out of the box skagit, just get the heaviest one.

Yes stupervisor is right. A WC without tips 1 or 2 is what he is talking about. Aaron has them, and the Red Shed as well. They do cost $60.00. Any Rio dealer can get these if they want to. Fred if you cut your floating WC @ 30' from the tip and loop it you will have the same thing.

you need to make sure the bellies are at least 1 grain per foot heavier than the tips you will be tossing
ie to throw t-14 14 grains a foot you need at the very least a line that is 15 grains per foot heavier is better. hence using the 11/12/13 looped belly coil on your 8 or 9 weight rods, meiz's fes will work with same line, i know i have one :-)

Interesting (and good info!!) Stu., just found my WC 11-12-13 with tips line. Given where this is cut back as a 'stock line,' how much more would you cut the head back? Fred

Fred if it's already a Rio WC Versi-Tip line you don't need to cut it back, just take out the center section and you are set.

My friend uses the Rio Windcutter without the middle section on one of his rods. It casts pretty well even for me.

don't be hatin the wc, that line alone made jim v a small foryune and turned a bunch of people into 2 handed users.
it has a place in this world of spey, slicing and dicing lines is nice, but i would rather spend all that time fishing instead of glueing. just me is all bro'
