Area 8-2 Report 2/28/04 (Blackmouth)
      #102725 - 02/28/04 05:43 PM

Quillback and I fished from his boat this AM in Area 8-2 for Blackmouth. It rained quite a bit, but the action was pretty good while the pressure was light with only a few other boats. The water was pretty flat.

We put the lines in the water at about 7 AM and Jeff promptly hooked up with a keeper. But hey, it was early, so he released it.

We got back to fishing, and Jeff hooked another one. This time a 12 inch shaker. Of course, that one was released, too. After that, we started picking up regular flounder. Catch/Release, Catch/Release, Catch/Release, repeat. We were marking lots of bait balls and fish. Jeff picked up his second keeper (this time he kept it at about 9:25 really close to high tide.)

After another flounder or two and a couple of missed takedowns, the rest of the morning was slow. We also stopped marking fish and bait balls. We stopped at about Noon. The fish checker at the ramp said Jeff's fish was on the top end of the size about 9-10 lbs for the 10 that were caught up to that point.

We were running the downriggers with Silver Horde plugs with Herring and/or Squid smelly jelly at 96-97 feet in 101-103 ft of water. Sorry, no pictures, it was raining too much to pull out the camera.

jimh- do you fish that area a lot? I am going to be up in Everett this summer and was hoping you might give me some pointers on fishing up there.

Thinking about going up there this week. You didn't say where you were. I've always liked Elger Bay this time of year and maybe Greenbank..

D3S, no I just started fishing in Saltwater. Quillback is the expert, or you can checkout the maps/info at SalmonUniversity.com. BC, we were fishing near Camano Island.

Disclaimer: I am no expert.

D3S - They haven't published the regs yet for this summer, If it is like past years there will be a catch and release season for Kings starting some time in July but Coho retention allowed - this is usually in area 9. There is also the Tulalip bubble fishery in August for returning hatchery Kings which I haven't fished much. Possession Bar in area 9 is an excellent place to fish for Kings in the summer if you don't mind releasing them, there are also resident Coho that hang around that you can catch in the rips, not very big 3-5 pounds but something to bring home after a morning of King fishing. John's Sport shop (I don't know the exact name) on Broadway in Everett is an excellent place to go and get some advice, ask to speak to the owner John Martines. He published a couple of pmaphlets that show you exactly where to troll in some of the better areas. When I first got downriggers mounted on my boat I follwed the advice given in his pamphlet and immediately started catching salmon.

I think that lately 8.2 has only been open in the bubble for King retention (in the summer), it has opened for Coho in the past and I would assume it will this year, if so the area from Mukilteo to the Shipwreck (which is the southern boundary of 8.2) is a good area for Coho from about 2nd week of September into October.
