What is that smell...electrical fire.. Nope just an idiot using the microwave to heat the reel seat to break the glue down. DO NOT DO THIS....use the oven to heat it up and bake the glue off. Dam that stinkssss and it didn't work either.
If you have a broken rod and wish to save the old reel seat bake the epoxy loose in the oven and pull it off. You can save a buck and get to keep that old friendly feel for your next pole.

Careful work with a heat gun will probably work, too. Some of the posters on the rodbuilding.org site use hot water, and some say a hairdryer also will work. Doesn't take too much heat to break the epoxy bond.

Update: boiling water is the way to go! I've salvaged several seats from broken rods, and one from a flyrod blank that is being rebuilt, and boiling water did the trick quickly, neatly, each time. On the broken rods, I cut the rod in front of the seat off with an abrasive wheel on the Dremel, then put the seat into a pot of boiling water on my kitchen stove. 5 minutes later, pull it out, and twist the reel seat to break it loose, no muss, no fuss, no smell. Do be sure to wear gloves, as it does get a little hot.

What if you are just wanting to replace the real seat because it is striped, I have to remove the top cork and real seat and it is pretty tough to fill up the bath tub with boiling water. I'll try the blow dryer and see what happens. How hot can I get the blank?

No. What I do is (hold your breath) cut the rod through the reel seatand the blank. I use a peice of old blank to make the splice.wrap thread on both sides of the splice to make it stronger. Build up new arbors for the real seat. Now it is time to glue splice and reel seat and clean up the xtra glue. Don't forget to line everything back up. WFFF
