Spey rod guide spacing
      #104873 - 03/16/04 01:38 PM

I am going to be building a spey rod and I am wondering if anyone knows were I can get a guide spacing and size chart for a 13’ blank. Thanks in advance.

Best advice is to contact the blank manufacturer. They will give you the appropriate size and spacing.

Lacking that, I suggest finding the spine, then taping guides in place and using a line, check the bend/action. Mark the optimum locations prior to winding.

Bob's 'spot on!' also check with the blank manufacturer if they recommend the guys be 'on top' on 'the bottom' of the blank section spine (you've got to test each section!!!).

One way, or the other, will greatly impact how the rod handles ... especially with the casting.

I measured and copied a 13' Thomas & Thomas, except I didn't put my stripping guides on backwards like T&T does . I put my guides on 'the bottom' I hope that is right because the rod is completed. Now to find the perfect line. Anyone ever cast a 13' Rainshadow spey rod? I already have some 15', 150gr, 10wt sinktips that I would like to use. I was thinking about buying a triangle taper line by Royal Wulf then cutting and looping it to run with my existing sink tips. Anyone use a trianglr taper line or make a simular line sytem for spey casting? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
