Hi Ron1, Morels come into season more toward the spring, I know that they like wood ash so if your near an old forest fire check them out

Its common practice in clear cuts to burn after a logging, but I have never looked there yet. Still trying to figure morels out.. got the chantrelles dialed in.

Very Very Soon!
Was kinda kicking around the woods last weekend, didn't see any yet. Will probablly look a bit next weekend.
Underneath big cottonwoods. I drive down a road and that is what I am looking for. Last year was my first year hunting for them and I just got addicted big time. Had a couple of 10 lb outings..
Now this is for basically sea level. I have yet to find any up in the mountains. Did do a little looking last May over on the east side. I think a was a few weeks late. I hear you have to follow the snow line?

Ron what kind of ground did you find them in? I am not dialed into searching for these yet.

I'm gonna look for these this spring. Ive never done it but have a friend who is a mycologist. She tells me they like burns so check where last summers forest fires were heres a link http://www.wildlandfire.com/arc/firelinks03.htm
She said they also like cottonwood trees. Apparently their resemblence to pine cones makes em a challenge to spot.
Im totally new at this mushroom thing , but really dig it. Hope this helps Marty and everyone else. She said she starts hunting in May following the snow line.

marty the kind of ground i found them in, is in the place you spend a lot of time... your probably steping all over them walking to your favorite fishing spot. been finding them along the river bottoms if there is cotton woods there should be some morels, if there is alot of leaves onthe ground dont be afraid to move them, cause sometimes they have'nt poped thru yet.most the ones we got were right at the bases of those cotten woods.. good huntin....

The morel you're finding along riverbottoms and under cottonwoods is likely the early morel(verpa bohemica). It is not as sought after as the ordinary morel(morchella esculenta, or angusticeps) which appears later, and is more common in eastern WA burn areas. Most mushroom experts advise parboiling early morels, and discarding the water, as they contain a liver toxin with an accumulative effect. Early morels have a cap attached only at the top of the stem. The ordinary morel's cap attaches to the stem at the base of the cap, and at the top. True morels are one of the most prized of all edible mushrooms, but some individuals can have an adverse reaction to them, especially in the presence of alcohol. I've got a relative who can eat serving after serving of chanterelle mushrooms, but has become sick each time he's eaten morels. He doesn't do morels, anymore. Early morels are usually found in March and April. I've found them as early as late February around here. True morels are found in April, May, and sometimes into June. I've only found a couple of true morels on this side of the mountains. They were in spots where I'd had burnpiles the previous year.

Cedar I was shown true morels yesterday at work of course they wouldn't tell me the location other than it was a field. These were not the early's like I found last year. They are out but not plentiful.. I will be out looking this weekend in the micro climate.

Interesting. Maybe the field had an old burnpile in it. When it comes to divulging mushroom locations, the rule is "don't ask, don't tell". You'd sooner get a steelheader to take you to his honey hole, than to get an avid mushroom hunter to direct you to his pickin' patch. After all, these things "are to die for"! Let us know how your weekend hunt goes...in general terms, of course

last year i was blessed to have a healthy pach to come up right next to my front porch some were evewn 6-8 inches tall. i was able to pick about 3 or four times.yum yum . it was pretty cool to be able to watch them grow day by day. most grew in the dirt of my flower bed and some on the edge of the grass. i dont grow any plants there though i composted svereal buckets of appeles there in the fall and had put in about 30 gallons of fish poop. i have been keepin my eye out for them and iam scared to mow right around there.hopefully i will get a couple to pick this year.

I was told its not good to eat fungi from your lawn as your lawn may have a history of pesticide and fertilizer action?? Same with roadside fungi as they tend to collect and store toxins. I'm told its a bad idea to eat fungi from woodchip piles or beauty bark becuase that wood has been treated with chemicals. All this from my mycologist friend....but who knows.

Cottonwoods hold a fair amount so i'm told. My buddy picks em and he swears by it. Got some this weekend down in Demoregon, sorry Demicrats/Oregon. Shouldn't be too far behind up here. Anyone want to go? My wife and I love mushrooms. Never tasted a morel though!

I've seen a lot of people mushroom hunting along SR530 between Darrington and Rockport the last two weeks. It must be fair picking for that many people to be out.

We found a small number last week on Bleweit Pass. The Forest service folks i Leavenworth gave us a list of recent burns, but we found ours near creeks at about 1500 feet elevation. A friend in B.C. said there are tons of them at the Oakanogan Mountain burn Peachland.

Hunted some higher elevation burn areas in Okanogan on Saturday. Only found a dozen morels, and they were all past prime condition. Started out thinking we were too early; ended up thinking we were too late. Lots of rain in sunny Okanogan this past week.
