German Fly Fishing
      #105851 - 03/24/04 10:17 AM

Well got my flight reservations for the first week in May to Frankfurt for the big corporate WORKSHOP (Bobk they were called conferences or boondoggles when you worked, now we actually work at them. The good old days of big corporate boondoogles are over at least in my company. LOL)

Hope to at least hit a fly shop in Frankfurt if they let me out of the conference room to peruse the Kaiserstraffe. Yes I know it well from my 7 months there in the USAF in 68 at Rhein Main Air Base).

Will try to contact through this German fly fishing club if they know of any they could send an american with big dollars to spend. LOL

http://www.akoetigheim.com/

Got to love a country that I believes beer drinking is a daily ritual and maybe a sporting event. See link below. Let the Henninger and Pop tops start flowing. May have to buy some german beer this month so my system is ready for the heavy influx a month from now. Its wicked stuff fellows.

Germany Beer

Wow, lederhosen budget cuts, times are tough at the father land. LOL

Budget Cuts - lederhosen (sp)

Got to give a speech there can you imagine that Bobk ?

I will take some pictures for you. But I can tell you there will not be any flyfishing maybe some picture so the Rhein River castle tour but I doubt it. Hopefully I will find time for some german fly purchases, hey maybe I can get Maxima cheaper there ?

Who is the "free-spending American with 'big bucks'?" Are you taking someone with you?

If you were SMART, you could wangle or slip in a trip for seeforellen - those big sea-run browns that are dearly loved. Or maybe a trip for the huge huchen!

Naah - THAT will never happen! You have to spend a few coins to make either happen!

Nah, you can get maxima about as cheap here. Just make sure you take lots of pics. The romantische strasse (where the castles are) is a site to see. Make sure you see Linderhof and Neuschwanstein if you can.

Don't buy the german beer here. Sucks. Not what you'll be drinking there. I've actually had Lowenbrau in Munich and was wonderful stuff. Had it here and nearly barfed. Was gross. They add alot to it for export. All natural there. But so many breweries, you won't be able to see them all. Have fun, and don't gain too much weight. LOL. I know I always did.

I('m) looking for a fly(lol can also be used for bowtie!), load and study on my German language capabilities(?) too fishing (well sort of). Black mind(?).

Possibly looking into flyfishing words in German?

That's the best I could get that using a dictionary and my very scant German. How did I do?

BTW: Got the flies Hal, thanks!

LOL, that's Black Ghost on the end (geist is ghost). So was refering that to Hal. My German sucks. Been since 90' since I really spoke it. Just a tad here and there. Give me a couple weeks back there, may pick it back up. Wasn't fluent, but was pretty good when I was living there.

Ouch! Brain hurts. Must have beer. Fly-fishing colleagues(?) you're taking them some Black Ghosts; visiting a German FlyFishing Shop; or it will be a wasted trip; (spouse?) has plans for you to visit friends in Frankfurt; do you have to get special permission to flyfish there?; you'll be busy there and won't be posting to SH.NET (or other .nets) for a while. Black Ghost...

Herr Ober, drie bier Bitte. Unde Grosse Schnappes!

Brain back in neutral.

Man, that hurts Hal. I'm very rusty on my german. But that was a mouthful. LOL.

Hmmmmmm, I'm dying here now. I was supposed to make a trip this year. But the back and cashing out my vacations has put a stop to that. But, maybe next year. Want to go back and see my host family. And my best friend to boot. Want to take my kids and let them experience Europe too. But away from the "tourist" spots. Ooooo, to only have fresh brotchen in the morning with real butter. Man, I miss living there at times. My host parents (my host mother to be exact) would get up early each morning and head to the local backerie. Fresh rolls. Hmmmmmm, plus the morning meats and cheeses. I'm drooling here. LOL

I worked in Germany with the various auto makers helping them with CAD design in the 80's. I could never get over that those guys would drink beer at lunch. After one Friday night of too many beer gardens, we decided it would be fun the try and throw rocks at the East German border guards. Have you ever tried a get away in one of those junky citroen's that look like a VW? I think I wet myself.

RR - That wasn't in '84 by any chance was it? Seem to remember getting an alert call VERY EARLY on a Sat Morning because of some "hooligans" causing trouble on the border. If I find out it was you that ruined a wonderful night with a German Frau I'll smear bananas on your boat, tackle, and first born!

LOL. Yeah, we did similar things (don't worry Decom, it was 1987 when I did mine). We were near the Hartz mountains and on a tour with a German army General. We got busted later on when we got home, but we mooned the East German soldiers trying to get their pictures. They wouldn't look at us, except when they had cameras up trying to get a picture of our General who was our tour guide. May scan and show the pics. This is in the area where they only had a fence (I know some know, but not all knew it wasn't all a concrete wall around the country). Had a blast. And, I got something "fun" from a cute fraulein who dared me to do it.

This would have been in 87, We were in Wolfsburg, and drove to a town called Debisleide (sp)? The west side was high ground with a chain link fence and a 30 yard or so "no man's land", and then the concrete wall. You could throw the rocks down at them. The bad news was no place to hide, (except for high weeds) especially when they turned the lights on. I thought for sure they would shoot us.

LOL Bob. Yes, she was clean, not one of the skanky ones you find up on Rapierstrasse in Hamburg. Was good though, ended up dating after that. Found out she had a crush and didn't tell me. Well, she REALLY told me.

Ok, here's some pics. Actually, when we were in the group, we were asked by the General to shield him from these East German Soldiers. They actually approached once we got out there. So, they pretty much stalked us, but staying behind the border (just a simple post you'll see in one of the pics). But, got some good pics after the arse bearing. LOL. Got some good pics after that. LOL. If you see a red X, just right click on it and hit "show picture" and will appear. I didn't want to use up Marty's bandwidth, so uploaded to my photoisland.

Thought I'd throw in some pics near Checkpoint Charlie. Yeah, I was bad, I jumped the small fence and had my pic taken next to the wall. LOL. I was only 17, come on, I did stupid stuff like the rest. Plus, was hoping they wouldn't shoot me.

I TOLD you that they have very good trout fishing in Germany! Although on my trips, we did not seem to have that many stocked fish, the najority seemed to be holdovers or native fish. If you put your mind to it, you CAN make time for fishing... it's just a matter of setting your mind to it!

Why are you so hard-headed about this - or aren't you staying for at least a weekend?
