Hell, if it's German, they ALWAYS have fun at their events. I think the scariest event though I had the pleasure of attending was the one at my exchange city of Uetze just outside of Hannover. Is a small farming community. Well, they have a Schutzenfest in July if memory serves me. For those not in the know, that would be a shooting festivel. Only problem, LOTS of drinking and LOTS of shooting. I think what scared me the most, I fit right in with these folks. LOL. Think Bob would've had a blast as well. Fired some nice guns (and alot of old antique guns as well). But, if they can find an excuse to have a "fest", the German's will do it. God I miss it over there. Hope to go back and see my "Familie" soon. I agree with Bob though, I'd tag some vacation time onto that. I can't go there just for business without having some fun too. NO WAY! Man, I keep thinking of the food. Damned, trying to lose weight, not gain it. I know I gain an instant 20#'s just thinking of it over there. Especially abendbrot. LOL, I'll relay this story. Was funny as hell. Probably told it before, but TO BAD, telling it again.
It's a tradition to have Kaffee and Kuchen when visiting someone for the day. Which is coffee and cake for those who don't speak/read German. I was the first American my host family had, so was showing me off to friends and family. Only one problem. I went to like 8 houses inbetween mittagessen (lunch) and abendbrot (dinner). They like you to have at least one piece of every cake they have on hand. I was rolling by the 8th house. Awesome Tortes, I must confess. But after eating the equivalent of about 2 whole tortes, I was beyond stuffed. But soooooooo good.

Yeah, Jerry -
Those Schwabian treats are SOMETHING! (Now, all they have to learn is how to cook beef RARE, not "When it's black, it's cooked!")
And, the way to gain German friends FAST is to make a "booze stop" for gifts at the duty-free store. Just buy 4 jugs of good booze - that will assure you of 4 VERY good friends when you get there!
(Sounds to me like Hal doesn't get too many business trips overseas - he's still in "learning mode"!! It just takes a little common sense and you get to see and do stuff that the "average American tourist" wouldn't dream existed.)

In 30 years of working for fortune 100 type companies I have only extended one business trip for pleasure and that was in Switzerland to go here for a one day trip with my swiss friends wife who was a former tour guide and knew her swiss history. The Eiger is quite impressive and I saw an avalanche and got two pictures of it while we ate lunch below the Eiger at Kleine Schidegg.
http://www.jungfraubahn.ch/english/pages/RE/RE_AgKg.htm
I have always had to be somewheres else in a few days so staying was never an option in London (3 times), Bermuda (3 times), Zurich ( 3 times), Lisbon Portugal (2 times), Amsterdam 2 times, Vancouver, BC (once), Toronto (4 times) and then all over the states to many times to count.
Have to get back for business, fishing, and mothers day that weekend.

Tell you what, Hal -
Sightseeing is fine, if that's what turns you on.
As for me, I get my kicks from flyfishing for trout/salmon and shooting - and there is good fishing or shooting opportunities almost EVERYWHERE!
MOST of the places you mentioned have decent fishing opportunities close by - within an hours drive. SOME of 'em have some good shooting, too!
As far as having to travel, I cut down my trips the easy way - by taking the time to learn how to use the Corporate closed-circuit TV that interconnected the plants. Used to cut out all of the BS of "travelling to meetings" all the time. (Sure saved my travel budget, too!)
And a little planning makes setting things up on YOUR schedule possible!
THINK like an executive!

Bobk.
When you are on corporate staffs all of your career believe me there is no time for this type of stuff. If you are not going to the next location you have to debrief management write a report and get back on to another plane for another time critical project. Deliver a report to the CEO within a week or two etc. Doubt if you ever had a job like that did you ? I don't now but used to. BTW, video conferencing has failed as a viable communications method. Our rooms are hardly used any more.
New orders, conference is in Bad Homburg just outside of Frankfurt.
http://www.bad-homburg.de/webdocdisplay....417100671082345
Looks very historic etc.. Have to check out the sauna, casino, gastonomy, and pubs I guess instead of the fishing unless there are fish in those hot springs.

In other words my you know what is theirs. Lots going on check the recent business news for my company. Its public knowledge now.

Whew - sounds like a job I wouldn't want. I had offers for jobs like that, and turned 'em down cold! You just lose all of your individuality. I know EXACTLY what you mean.
That's a big shame, and you miss out on a lot of opportunities for a nice time! You have my condolences.

I just wish I was going to Hamburg and not Bad Homburg. Like to get a piece of this thing, lost 6 business colleaugues in WTC not to mention a sister in law who almost got caught in the collapse of the first tower that day on the street.
Looks likes its time to lay the heavy weaponry on them now, maybe they will get the message then !
God bless and protect our troops !

Well so much for the international Band of Brothers of fly fisherman. I sent 3 or 4 emails to german fly fishing sites over a week a go and no responses to date. Perhaps they are afraid of me fishing out their trout waters ? LOL
Oh well perhaps I will not spend many american dollars in their fly shop in Bad Homburg in two weeks. That will teach them to ignore an american fly fisher, right ?
Are they are allies, well partially in some efforts but not in Iraq or Afghanistand I know that for sure.
Wait until they see much jogging in the mornings with my american military hats and flags !

LOL. Yeah, we gave them the scoop. I actually emailed the German FF Club I fished with and told them to "Close ALL rivers/oceans, and inlets to Hal when he shows up".

Hy son-in-law gas to go to Europe or about three weeks. He is attending an electronics show in Stuttgart, as a major exhibitor, has to make sure it is set up right, and torn down after, then go to Holland on business, then on to Sweden for a brief business trip, and some old business associates/friends, and then a couple of days' vacation. (Who says corporate guys don't know how to take trips?)
Yes, Hal, there are STILL a lot of companies who do it right!
He is Director of Marketing for the firm he works for.
And all of MY trips included at least a day or two of "R and R" on the way back - London if we were in Europe, or Hawaii if we were in the Far East. What kind of chintzy outfit do you work for???

Oh those Marketing types are still spending corporate $$$ like "drunken sailors" these days. Buts thats about all that get to do it other than the CEOs these days of corporate downsizing. Suppose he is flying business or first class also for $ 7K plus also, while we must fly coach for $ 700 and I can just imagine the characters I will have to squeeze in between on that 9 hour flight to Frank Furt !! I really don't want to go since it is going to be exhausting with the jet lag both ways in a 5 day period and 12 hour plus a day corporate meetings, which will result in MORE WORK for me !
This is not a fun trip believe me.

Well, he has increased their sales by 3 times since joining them (4 years now), and listening to customer's wants and needs, NOT what some corporate guy THINKS they want and need. And he watches the bucks, as well!
He's got his head on straight. The CEO is a school chum of his, and was after him for awhile. (And he did THIS during a time of companies NOT doing capital spending!)
Anyway, quit bellyaching and get the job done - then you can be a real corporate executive, rather than a "staff person". Trips, especially overseas junkets, are not expected to be "fun events" anyway - you just have them on a "needs of the business" basis. Any fun involved you do in your free time, and at your own expense!
It's all just common sense, anyway.

What products does he sell ?
Just got my agenda for Germany, looks like I have 1-2 hours for myself, and when I do no fly fishing store will be open thats for sure ! Maybe I can pick up some european fly fishing books or mags at the Rhein Main airport thats about the extent of my fly fishing opportunity on this trip it appears.

Did my homework so I know the key german fly fishing words. See below. Got the fly shop targeted for a visit next saturday and some fly fishing talk with the deutshe landers. They have no term for steelhead so I will have to explain it is a big strong Regenbogenforelle that lives in the paciic ocean or great lakes and returns to our river after several years to test our angling skills !! LOL
BG
German Fishing Related Terms.
Auslander - Foreigner Ache or Ach - River in Southern Bavaria Angelrute - Fishing Rod Angelhanken - Fishing Hook Angelschnur - Line Parallelschnur - Level Fly Line Sinkendeschnur - Sinking Line Beidseitig verjungte schnur - Double Taper Line Asche - Grayling Bachforrelle - Brown Trout Bachsaibling - Brook Trout Fliege - Fly Fliegengerte or Fliegenrute - Fly Rod Fliegenfisher - Fly Fisher Fischwasser - Fishing Water Fliegenbinden - Fly Tying Fliesswasser - Fast Water or River Forelle - Trout Huchen - River Char or Danube Salmon Maifliege - May Fly Nymphe - Nymph Nassfliege - Wet Fly Regenbogenforelle - Rainbow Trout Rolle - Reel Schonzeit- Closed Season Seeforelle - Lake Trout See - Lake (as in Hinter-see) Trockenfliege - Dry Fly

Seeforellen doesn't equal lake trout, unless you are too far from the coast! It means sea-run "brunforellen" (plural of "brown trout" - abd BIG un's, too!!

Hope they have a special sale for an all american fly fisher next saturday. Maybe a nice german fly fishing hat ! I am known to like fly fishing hats and probably need a new lucky one.
Hey Bobk you should see my new summer new marine camo sun hat which I bought last month at our big military surplus store. Love this store, not many left anymore but this is a big one and close to me too.
Auf wiedersehn !

Wiedersehen! Have a nice time, Hal!
But especially, you will be VERY pleased with that utility "Gung Ho!" hat - I've got to get a new one, as my old one is pretty ratty. Too bad they don't make the "old Corps" twill hats anymore - I would kill for one!

Ah, you have the new computer generated camo hat I see. I have one of the old woodland camo boonies my uncle gave me years ago.
Speaking of british jackets. Still miffed about my old jacket I had. Was a winter field jacket I bought when I was over in the UK. Was a great jacket, with liner. Was one of those SAS smocks. Loved that thing. But, came up "missing" a few years ago. Wish I knew who was the lucky recipient of it.

I have lots of camo, I keep upgrading to the new stuff every couple of years. You should see this military surplus store, its got everything, glad its a 5 mile drive to it and in a direction I seldom go. LOL
British army fleece jacket is neat you can find them on the web if you do a search.
Note the plastic bags filled with my new flys in that picture. Tying some tubes right now. Think I like this tube thing !!

Hal, that's a "boonie" hat, NOT a utility hat. Still a good hat, but I prefer the old-style WWII/Korean green twill utility hats. In lieu of that, my ol' camo "Jones Style" hunting hat is almost a permanent fixture on my head for all outdoor activities.
