4-1. Some people prefer 5-1 but I think the hummers prefer the sweeter mix.

4 cups water to one cup sugar. Boil it and let it cool. While you can get the sugar to dissolve in very hot water, it takes boiling water to get rid of some bacteria. Refridgerate leftovers. I always bring it to room temp before filling containers, even if it has been in the fridge. I wouldn't want hummers to get a tummy ache. That's probably a wive's tale but I still adhere to it.

NO FOOD COLORING! Do not add pro cure for color either!

I go with Aunty M.. I also use filtered water for the mixture just to be safe. I have a beautiful male roufus hanging out now and the wild currants and salmon berries are just about to bloom so he will be very happy shortly. I'm sure you know, but never use honey as a sweetner as it causes some sort of fungual infection on their tongue.

I guess spring is reluctantly here, then. These little critters emptied my feeder in one week. Now, where are the swallows?

I took some humminbird photos today. Hopefully they will turn out fast little buggers.

Maybe spring is actually going to come. The swallows arrived in our area over the weekend. I saw hundreds of violet green swallows dipping and diving over Silver Lake in Everett.

I haven't seen my resident swallows yet. Here is a pic of a hummer at my window feeder right next my computer desk.

Nice picture Aunty M!

Now, I have a Pileated Woodpecker that has decided to use my bat house as a drum to call his mate. It makes a great drum but if there is a bat in there he won't be getting a good days sleep!

Maltby, that must sound so cool!

I got a pic of a female this morning. Not the easiest to do with a digital.

We added vanilla this year and it seems to bring them.

Really? I hadn't heard of that. Is that 10-4 for their health? Even with the hot weather yesterday, no sign of hummers in our yard yet. Our old returnee must have croaked so will have to hope for a new resident.

Been meaning to send this post for a week. We've had "hummers" around for over two weeks now. It took a few days before I had a visual. No feeders out...been building a fence to keep the neighbors' dogs from crapping in the yard.
