Spencer Lake (Mason County)
      #107068 - 04/01/04 09:01 PM

I had a some hours to kill and not enough time to make it to a river, so I went to Spencer last Sunday (the 28th) morning. I thought it would be nice to have my coffee with some trout instead of watching bass fishing on TV.

I was a little surprised to see 9 boat trailers at 0630 on a random March Sunday. I launched and within a couple of minutes landed a 14" white nosed 'bow on a seal bugger and realized then that the lake was freshly planted (I later verified this on the WDFW website).

Anyways, the fishing seemed to be pretty good. I didn't see people yarding in the fish but quite a few folks had landed some of the bigger trout, and were bringing in the regular stockers at fairly short intervals. There definitely wasn't much surface activity, at about 0800 before the wind picked up I got some decent fish near the surface using soft hackle emergers (there were a few mayflys (march browns?) coming off). I would say that the folks soaking power bait were having as much luck as the trollers. One lucky soul fishing by the ramp from the bank had a white-nosed 6 pounder!

After the short burst of surface activity I hooked quite a few fish dragging around a carey special on a full sinking line, although I got all of the bigger planters near the surface. There was only 1 other flyfisher on the lake.

Later Gators

Spencer is a good year round lake, but after the opener, Benson gets the knod from me. Small lake with no gas motors allowed, plus they get a buttload of triploids. Caught one a few years back that had held over a while that was 7.25 pounds. Nahwatzel (sp?) also got fresh plants.

Wow, I have lived at Lake Limerick for the last 3 years, but haven't been to Benson yet. I mean why would I it is 10 whole minutes away. Now that I know it is no gas motors I will try it some evening after it opens. Thanks DF.
