Kitsap County Trout Fishing
      #108371 - 04/14/04 08:12 AM

Springtime is time for trout
Chad Gillespie / Bremerton Sun
As the April 24 lowland lakes trout fishing opener approaches, get ready to catch some fat rainbow trout throughout our Kitsap County lakes.
Trout fishing our local lakes during the spring is a great opportunity for both the boat and bank angler. Fishing from the bank can be just as good as boat fishing and doesn't include nearly the preparation or expense.
If you're a bank or boat angler some excellent spots to try include Buck Lake, Island Lake, Wildcat Lake and Mission Lake.
One of the most peaceful and serene lakes in our county is Buck Lake. Development has been kept to a minimum and the natural environment is beautiful.
It offers one the ability to walk down to the lake, put up a chair and cast out your offering. It doesn't get much easier, and it's a great spot to bring kids.
To get there, take State Route 104 heading toward Kingston, take a left towards Hansville, go down the hill into Hansville and take a left following the signs to Buck Lake.
For tackle, start with the traditional Berkley Power bait still-fishing setup. This consists of a light trout rod and spinning reel, some slider sinkers, egg hooks and green Power bait.
I like to run a sliding sinker up my line and then attach a snap swivel below it. Next, tie on a three-foot leader with your egg hook. Mold on your favorite color of Power bait to the hook and cast it out.
Using the three-foot leader allows the bait to float above the bottom of the lake; therefore the fish can see it. Remember, fish can see up and in front of them, but not beneath them.
Boat anglers can use the same set up as described above -- but troll slowly or drift with the wind. This can be a deadly tactic for these non-educated rainbows.
Fly anglers can also have a blast fishing the lakes throughout Kitsap County. I prefer a moderate full sinking line with a nine-foot tapered leader. Carey Specials and Woolly Buggers will provide you with decent action.
Opening day lake fishing is a great time to get kids out fishing. Introducing kids into fishing is a lifetime sport and source of healthy recreation that helps provide a quality lifestyle into the future.
Trout fishing can provide enough action to keep kids actively engaged and interested. If you don't have a child of your own, take the neighbor kid out fishing and get them into the sport.
The Kitsap County Poggie Club will be offering its annual kids fishing day on April 24. It is open to any who would like to bring a child to fish, and is a great way to get a youngster enthused about fishing. The time, place and contact information will be included in next week's column.
