Opening Day reports?
      #109339 - 04/24/04 08:32 PM

Took the boys out to our favorite little opening day lake. We caught a number of trout, up to 4 lbs, and one 6lb steelhead. Ryan hooked this steely, but then decided it was fighting too hard, so he handed the rod off to his brother. This was the only fish we kept.

The only time I touched the rod was when I baited the hook. The boys did a great job of tag teaming this fish.

We used it all. Wedding rings, gang trolls, Canadian wonders, and even some flies. Gotta love living near a steelhead hatchery where they plant the excess fish in the local lakes. It made for a number of suprised kids today.

Saw Rocket Red. Thanks for the fly, Ryan!

Anyway, the weather was about as good as one could ask for, and it was nice rowing around the lake with 40 orther boats. As you can see from teh smiles, the boys had a great time.

Andy

Geeze, that's not your standard planter trout. Your boys are going to be spoiled now.
I spent the evening on a year-round lake fishing for browns. Hooked one nice fish but never saw it.

Nice to see you Andy. I could see you and kids were having a great time. I had to laugh when your kids were insisting you keep that first big one and you having to convince them to put it back. What a nice day for the opener. We caught some nice trout too. We completed a fly-rod double on some football trout, that was pretty interesting. As far as hatches go I saw a lot of fish rising for cigarette butts.

I checked at Lake Limerick country club(Mason county) and I think that the derby winner was somewhere around 7 pounds. I tossed dry flies from a dock for about 20 minutes. I had 1 cast where I didn't hook a fish. They must stock that lake with tons of 'em.

I fished Lake Ki tonight from 5:30 to dark. Got about a dozen to the boat and missed at least that many takes. All fish were small (under 12") and taken on trolled woolly buggers. I need to find some of those big trout you guys are talking about.
