Hi all, Randog here, and I live in Vancouver B.C., my wife (Mrs. Randog) will be on bussiness next Wed. Thurs. & fri. in Vancouver Washington and I'll be with her. While she's at work I thought I'd visit a local river or two. Any sugestions on rivers within an hours drive from Vancouver Washington?
Thanks in advance, Cheers, Randog
P.S. I'd be glad to return the favor, if any of you guys are in Vancouver B.C. I'd be happy to show you some of our local flows.
Heres my personal fishing web page. Not great but worth a peek. www.geocities.com/hookemlarge

Ran - nice pics and links. I think the BCFDF is a great idea. I'm a Vedder addict too, but will settle for the Fraser until it re-opens. I'll be up there in the next month a couple times w/ my Dad in Abby.

Thanks Workin', Vedder is still open to fly only til the end of May. C&Red a nice little wild doe 2 weeks ago at Peach rd. on the Spey rod.
Fished the Squamish yesterday and today but nothing but Dollies right now, The Cap is kickin' out a few cohos lately.

Dad never got into fly-fishing, but in the last 2 weeks before they closed it to gear, he got into 15 steelies. Pretty dark, but one or two pretty decent.
Hmmm, maybe I should bring my fly gear up there. Usually bring it along as an 'extra' because it's more important to spend time w/ Dad than to fish the waters suited to fly-tossing.

Randog, I'm down in Van. USA. It's a little early for summer runs but there is some spring chinook. If you don't mind combat fishing there is a couple rivers just to the north that have some springers. Send me an e-mail before you head down this way. Know some other areas where "might" be able to find some early summer runs.

Hey Randog, I went to your website and noticed a lot of pics of the Vedder. I was actually thinking of taking my Dad fishing there during the first weekend of August. I was planning to fish the big boulder field run a few minutes drive downstream of the fish hatchery. This was an amazing strip last October. Do you figure there will be any appreciable amounts of Chinook or Sockeye running through at this time of year? Sorry about hijacking your thread.
Regards,

Live to fish, Aug. is a good month for Red Springs and Sockeye. The springs that you were catching in Oct. are the White Springs. Those bad boys start to show up in late Sept. and are in full swing by late Oct. Heres a little one from last Oct.
Don't forget all sockeye are C&R on the Vedder/ Chilliwack system. Good luck and have fun.

Well here's a quick report on a short outing on the Kalama River last Thursday. I arrived back home in Vancouver B.C. late last night so I apologize for the late report.
I headed out to Fred Myers to pick up my fishing liscence Thurs. morn and hooked up with Steelhead86 at a rest area just south of the Kalama R. (Mrs.Randog had to work ha ha ha) I piled all of my gear into Steelhead86's car and it was off to the river. On the drive out I took a quick thumb through Steelhead86's photo album and was quietly thinking to myself "this guy is definetly a good rod".
We arrived at a spot just below the upper hatchery and above "Saddle Rock" and there was another flyfisherman already there, SH86 asked him how he was doing and his reply was "two to the beach". When I heard that my hands were trembling as I could'nt tie my fly on my spey rod fast enough.
I asked SH86 if he minded if I took the upper pool at the 1000' marker. "Have at it" he replied. I started swing my fly through the tailout and cast after cast I could feel the tap tap tap of something small, it turns out they were steelhead smolts. After about 10 min. of fishing I look down where SH86 is fishing and he is "Fish on" it looked like a good fish by the bend in his flyrod. I went down to help him out with the fish but he told me to keep on fishing. It turns out SH86 lost it at shore. That was only the beginning SH86 put his "Special" little fly to work in the rapids and connected with a total of five summer run steelhead and beached two as well as countless smolts and sucker fish, all in and hour and a half of fishing! I would'nt have believed it unless I saw with my own eyes. Myself I'm a little ashamed to say that I only hooked up with one summer run and lost the darn thing right at my feet! Oh well I stll had 2 more days to fish with Mrs. Randog, but thats another story. Steelhead86's little fly creation worked like magic for him, I should have asked him for a couple to try.
I just have to say that every one of my American fisher brothers I talked to on the banks of the Kalama R. were very nice and helpful people. I have to give a big thanks to Steelhead86 for taking me under his wing and showing me the ropes. Clay, your a King among men buddy! Any time your North of the boarder make sure you call me and I'll show you our Canadian chrome.
P.S. Steelhead86 I'll send you some pictures soon.

Thanks Randog - great to meet you and do a little fly fishing. Your going to have to teach me how to fish for those Sockeye's in October. Looking forward to it.

So, that magic fly was the Sharpe Steely Fly? I just happen to have one... and will have to make more.

FJ15 - you nailed it. Was at it again yesterday - kind of a slow day. Hooked 3 and landed 2 Steelies, a springer and some smolts. Finally got one with some size to it. Kind of a dark native that gave an awesome fight with all kinds of airborne action! That one gave me some serious running - yahoo! The majority have been 5 to 7 pounders - it's still very early for the season.
